About that wetsuit
•
"1 dragged myself up onto the beach, water dripping from the ici-
cles which had formed on my various appendages, and collapsed on
the sand, taking a mouthful and savouring its grainy flavour...”
From: "How I spent my summer vacation"
Soon to be released in paperback. .
I'm back.
Back from two glorious weeks in the sun and the sand. The old
summer (spring, really) vacation went off without a hitch. The only
thing that 1 could possibly complain about was all the board sailing
1 didn't do. -
Oh, I planned to spend a good portion of my days out on the wa-
ter, blasting along without a care in the world, but my destiny was
obviously in the hands of someone who hates wetsuits.
A word about the water of Lake Eric in the first two weeks of
June: it is cold. No, cold doesn't quite db it -- it is frigid, numbing,
watch -out -for -those -icebergs cold. A wctsuit is an absolute must in
water like that.
1 have (or rather had) a wetsuit which was given to me by a friend
who thought he might take up scuba diving but never did. It was
given to hitn by a friend who had given up scuba diving. Judging by
the condition of the wctsuit, my friend's friend had given up scuba
diving many years ago.
I should mention one other thing: my friend and my friend's friend
were both very thin.
For the past three springs I have swallowed my pride and wriggled
into the patched old thing while standing on the peach, often in front
of numerous people. It is a routine which is long and rhythmic, con-
sisting of one -footed hops at first, then a series of tugs and stretches.
Dignity is not an element in the ritual.
I assure you it is not a pretty sight.
In the past I have been spared for the most part; by clambering
onto my board and sailing out far enough so that I no longer look
like a great over -stuffed burgundy sausage repaired with thick blue
patches, but rather like a black dot by a white sail.
That was not in the plan last week, however.
As I struggled into my much -lamented wetsuit for the first time
this season, l became frustrated and tugged when it would have been
better to hop, causing a scam to open in the worst place imaginable
-- for lack of a more delicate word -- the crotch.
The immediate implications of my situation didn't sink in before I
plunged in and headed out, damning the torpedoes as it were. But I
soon had the misfortune to fall in the drink.
The basic idea behind a wetsuit is that it fills with cold water, then
retains that water next to your skin until it is warm. All this depends
entirely on the suit being sealed against your skin. Unfortunately, all
the water ran out of my suit through the gaping hole in the lower re-
gions.
One spill was enough.
I returned to shore and beached the board, sputtering and cursing.
Small children ran to their mothers. I tore the suit off, threw it in
the sand, then threw myself on the sand near it and stayed there for
the rest of my vacation. -.
The wind, which has a habit of dying as soon as 1 put my feet in
the water, blew hard and steadily for the rest of the week.
