Centennials edge Strathroy
EXETER - Centennials had a
strong showing on Sunday when
they hosted Strathroy and beat them
4-2.
The game opened with Strathroy
having some good quality chances.
It looked like Strathroy would carry
the attack all first half. Exeter
chances were minimal at the start,
with the home team attempting to
push through the visitors defense
with long balls up the middle. Cen-
tennials then gained control of the
game with short passes.
Being_ one of the late arrivals,
Scan O'Rourke came into the game
at this point to help settle the play.
D'Rourkc pushed the hall to thc
outside to Jerry VanDeWalle who
took it down the right wing.
VanDcWallc made an exceptional
pass across the Strathroy net and
left winger Chuck Walker rippled
the back of the Strathroy goal to
make the score 1-0. Approximately
10 minutes later, Walker, with un-
assisted effort, went in alone on
goat and showed great poise in
pushing the ball into the net past
an advancing goali .
A goal was not sorcd again until
the second half when again
O'Rourke gave the ball to Gerald
Wccrsink who in turn opened the
Strathroy defense with a well placed
pass to Jerry VanDeWalle. VanDe-
Walle then fcd the ball to brother
Maurice who collected his first re-
bound and put the second shot into
the net.
Dale Regier upped the score to 4-
0 with good hustle on his own. ,
At this point the Exeter defense
lapsed and allowed a Strathroy at-
tacker inside. With a questionable
call, this attacker was awarded a
penalty shot.
Exeter goalie Craig Winbow,
having all percentages against him,
was able to get a piece of the shot,
but then it trickled into the corner
of the net.
Strathroy again found the mark to
finish the game at 4-2 for the home
club.
The services of George McEwan
were missed on the front attack. He
was injured at an away game June 5
against Taxandria in a 3-0 loss. It
is hoped he can return healthy as.
soon as possible.
Exeter Centennials arc away Sat-
urday June 18 against the Panhel-
lenic Soccer Club, at the Greek Ca-
nadian Community Centre on
Sarnia Road in London. Game time
