Court case causing
spending constraints
GRAND BEND - The impending
legal costs of determining who
owns the beach at Grand Bend were
never far from Reeve Harold Green's
mind during the regular June 7 ses-
sion of council.
A request from the village Cham-
ber of Commerce for a S200 dona-
tion to the cost of the Canada Day
fireworks display touched off a
mini -sparkler.
Green originally spoke against
the request, as the display is spon-
sored, and "with S100,000 in law-
yers' . fees corning up, we're
strapped"
Councillor Bruce Woodlcy argued
in support of a donation.
The contribution will be made,.
using $200 in unappropriated funds
from the rcc budget.
The display, which draws thou-
sands to the beach each year, was
formerly sponsored by the now de-
funct Burgerfest. , Nick and Jean
Carter have promised to make up
any shortfall in the campaign raise
funds to pay for this year's event;
if more than enough money comes -
in, the extra will be put in a spe-
cial•fireworks fund for next year.
Council also approved an expen-
diture not to exceed S3,000 to ex
tend the underwater section of the
launch ramps. When Woodlcy
wanted to know where the money
would come .from, Green replied
that the repairs must be made, as
the. municipality could possibly. be
held liable for doge if repairs
were not made.
The reeve raised the possibility
of a substantial increase in the
charge to use .the rtunps next year.
Want construction -delayed
GRAND BEND - The Grand 13cnd
Chamber of Commcrcc has sent a
letter to the municipal office re-
questing that all major construction
on Main St. be delayed until after
Labour Day.
Merchants are worried that heavy
truck traffic would disrupt the traffic
flow and impede access to the beach.
Blowing dust would be another irri-
tant
Councillor Marsha Lemon said a
petition to that effect is currently.
circulating among.. the merchants,
who do not all belong to the Cham-
ber, and will be presented to coun-
cil. She also raised the point that
building owners and renters might
have differing opinions.
A meeting will be arranged among
the C of C executive, council repre-
sentatives and Devlon president
James Vevey to discuss the con-
struction schedule.
Council will try to. arrange am
public meeting later the sae
evening (tentatively scheduled for
Friday, June 24) to deal with com-
plaints about the change from the
original location of.a walkway in
the Hovey beach.project. ' . •
A letter was received from the •
Grand Bend Yacht Club; asking if
there was a future possibility the
Club could use an old building on
the river if development forced the
relocation • of their clubhouse.
• Council promised to have some-
one speak to the -present lessee
about his plans after his Icasc ex-
pires in March 1989. .
