COMMON ERRORS IN
GOLF
By Ron Bileski
C.P.G.A. Golf Profes-
sional, Exeter Golf Club
MISTAKE: Not warming up
- Most bodies, like cars, take a
little warming upto run
smoothly and efficiently. Not
warming up properly results in
stiff swings, minimal accuracy,
and sometimes injuries to an-
kles and muscles.
CORRECTION: The latest
research in sport medicine tells
us that stretching those mus-
cles before using them in car -
nest prepares them for their
task. The -golf club makes a
fine stretching aid. Bend your
botty to awaken those big back
muscles where your power lies.
Turn from side to side, holding
a golf club at both ends: Kncc
bends and short jogs also arc
useful in getting your motor
up to performance levels.
MISTAKE: ' Poor Grip
Some golfers use unorthodox
grips. This is a mistake for the
golfer who wishes tp progress
as quickly as possible in golf.
If you feel the club shift in.
your hand as.you make contact
with the ball, if your fingers
fly off the handle, if swinging
the club causes you pain in the
wrists or gets you knotted up
in your follow-through, chanc-
es arc you are using an unor-
thodox, poorly coordinated
grip.
CORRECTION: -With the
left hand square, place the club
in the hand so that it runs diag-
onally across the palm at the
angle it would assume at ad-
dress. Place the club underneath
the pad at the rear of the hand
and curve yqur index finger
around the shaft. With thc right
hand facing the target, slip the
middle and ring fingers around
thc shaft, insuring that the grip
of the club in against and un-
derneath the base pods of the
fingers, and that the club is
resting in the fingers. Never
exert grip pressure with the
thumb or forefinger of the right
hand.
MISTAKE: Poor sct-up - In
a golfer's eagerness, he often
positions the ball too far for-
ward. The shoulders will thcn,
during the swing, move to the
left causing a slice.
CORRECTION: With the
ball moved back toward the
.center of the body, the
y'dcrs now will be aimed proper-
ly at the target, and the swing
will let you use your power to
drive the ball, rather than lift.
top, or miss it. Remember -
the butt of the club should al-
ways be pointing to the center
of your chest.
MISTAKE: In one's effort to
try to hit the ball long and far
the golfer uses mostly hands
and aims resulting in a discon-
nection of proper muscles for
proper golf shots.
CORRECTION: Here's a
simple drill for immediately ac-
quiring the feeling of connec-
tion in the golf swing. Stand
in your normal address position
holding something fairly heavy
such as a shag bag full of golf
balls, and try throwing it with
some authority toward a target
15 feet away. You will discov-
er that to do this effectively,
you wilt naturally draw on the
Targe muscles in your legs and
back. To have a powerful golf
swing, your whole body has to
_get into thc act. If you rely pri-
marily on your hands and arms
to toss the shag bag, you'll
lose both power and accuracy.
MISTAKE: Keeping your
head down - Undoubtedly the
oldest and most sacred admoni-
tion in the game of golf.
CORRECTION: If. you try
to lock your head into position
you'll tend to shift into a re-
verse pivot on your backswing
and you'll inhibit your -finish
on the follow-through. The
head must flow with the spine
during the, golf swing if you
arc to generate any real power.
The head docs not pull. the
body. Try throwing a -ball side
arm from your normal address
position and you'll get an accu-
rate feeling for the range of per-
missible and necessary head
movement in the golf swing.
MISTAKE. Keeping your
left arm stiff - Having a strong
or stiff left arm generates un-
wanted tension in your arms.
CORRECTION: In any of
the sports in which a player is
trying to advance an object
with a club, bat or raquet, sup-
ple but essentially soft arms
are an absolute must. It should
be obvious to most readers that
stiffness at anypoint in the
golf swing creates unwanted
tansion and restriction which ,
robs the player of both power
and accuracy.
MISTAKE: Grip - Left hand
over too far, right hand under
too far.
CORRECTION:- The most
important aspect of the grip
has to do with the position of
the hands relative to each other
and the target. They should al-
ways be placed on the club as
though in a clapping position,
with palms facing •each other
and with the back of the left
hand and the palm of the right
hand square to the target.
