Times-Advocate, 1988-06-01, Page 8Page 8 June 1, 1988 Many activities at Christian School CLINTON - Kindergarten, with teacher Miss Dekker and songleader Mrs. Samplonius, led a Monday morning assembly to begin the month of May. They shared their songs and led the audience in sing- ing their favourites. Grades seven and eight had an en- joyable bus trip to our nation's capital May _ 2 through 4. Parent volunteers Mrs. Trudy MacDonald and Mrs. Anne Zondervan accom- panied the students and staff mem- bers, Mr. Schuurman and Mr. Uyl. May 4 was also the day grade five and six had a great day at the Ontario Science Centre, with staff members Mrs. Vriend and Mr. Bos. Parent volunteers accompany- ing the junior class trip were: Mrs. Chris Bylsma, Mrs. Sadie Post and Mr. Tony Vanderlaan. The annual kite -flying competi- tion in connection with Klompen- fest is always exciting, especially if the kites arc handmade at home. Many of our students entered the final fly -off at the Community Park on May 18 with students from St. Joseph's Separate School and Clinton Public School. Con- gratulations to all the winners! From CDCS in the homemade division were seniors: Mike Zon- dag and Janna Bos, juniors: Wil- lene Ramak'er, Danny VanDriel, Andrea Ramaker and Tina Hoonard. In the commercial division, win- ners were: seniors Karen Zonder- van, juniors Stacy Buffinga, Ro- sanne Namink, Dennis Schilthuis and Terry Pardys. Primary winners were Alison Knip and Jason Pe- ters. Many weeks ago, students wrote letters inviting grandparents to a day at school. Friday, May 20 was the big day. Over 130 grandparents arrived and enjoyed classroom vis- its, luncheon, a short program, and great fun and fellowship. It was an exciting day for young and not -so - young! Our last weeks of this month have been busy in field day tryouts for participation on May 31, at the meet at Seaforth. Grade six and seven have been busy with an interesting newspaper project. They have oduced the "Classroom Chroni, with ma v news items and reports. All grades are finishing their en- tries for the Clinton Spring Fair. We hope to see those results this weekend. With one more month left in the school year, we begin the busy countdov<fjy towards graduation. immummomminviummomis Ladies Auxiliary elects executive EXETER - The Ladies Auxiliary to the R.E. Pooley Exeter Branch 167 Royal Canadian Legion held their regular meeting Monday, May 23 with 28 members present. Presi- dent Shirley Smith chaired the meeting. Glenn Pfaff won the 50/50 draw for April and Kathy Fady for May. Dawn Murray won the mystery prize. A $25 donation was made to Hu- ron and Perth Lung Associatiortiand $50 to the Salvation Army. Plans where made for the bus trip to Toronto June 15. • Barbara Hearn sports chairperson, reported on Zone Sports: bowling in Goderich September 10; euchre in Kincardine September 17; darts in Exeter October 1 and cribbage in Clinton October 15. President Shirley Smith presented our incoming president Erny Robin- son with her president's.pin. Officers for 1988-89 are: past president - Shirley Smith; president - Erny Robinson; first vice presi- dent - Cathy Pfaff; second vice pres- ident - Marilyn Riley; treasurer - Annie Lawson and Scargant at Arms - Estelle Chalmers. The executive arc: Rua Lessard, Marguerite McLeod, Mary Thomp- son, June Borland and Barbara Hearn. ' Incoming president Erny Robin- son closed the meeting. Lunch was served by Dawn Mur- ray and her group. Next general meeting is Monday, June 27. THIS IS HOW IT 1S DONE - At Thursday's Huron 4-H Achievement Night at the Crediton Conservation Area, leaders display their talents at roasting marshmallows. From the Iefft are Nancy Smith, Laura Hern, Linda Johns, Rural Organizationn Specialist Jane MueaaQ and Lia Snell. • Parkhill WI hosts 85th annual PARKHILL - The United Church, Parkhill Ontario was the setting for the 85th District Annual on May 10. Cloverdale Institute was the Hostess Institute taking charge of registration from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. District President, Mrs. Louise Gordon opened the meeting with 0 Canada and the Institute Ode. This year's theme was "2nd Time Around". Mrs. Evelyn Varlcy from Komoka W.I. brought thoughts on the theme. "What would we do if we had a 2nd time around?" Our lives would be full of anxieties. A big smile or hug could make life much brighter the 2nd time around. Beechwood W.I. held the In Me- moriam for deceased members. Louise Gordon gave the presi- dents welcome. In the years -1961- 63; Mrs. Gordon's mother Mrs. George Zavitz was district presi- dent and one of the District Annuals was also held at the Parkhill United Church, so history has repeated it- self. Mrs. Fran Hyatt, Provincial Board Member conducted the ratifi- cation of.the District Directors or their Alternates. Mrs. Mildred Bloomfield gave the Secretary -Treasurers Report and asked for the Auditors Report. A discussion was held on a letter from the Rural Organization Spe- cialist, Laurinda Lang asking for donations to the Middlesex 4-1-1 pro- gram. From our Treasurer's Report, most of our Institutes sponsor 4-H, so a motion was made not to donate from from the District Fund. Mrs. Glenna Ladcll, Program Co- ordinator is to represent the District at the Leadership Development Workshop held in Kingston from May 13th to 15th, 1988. Betty Parkin from Coldstream W.I. led us in a Sing Song with Glenna Ladell accompanying on the piano. Marilyn Thompson, District Pub- lic Relations Office reported. How to get new members.? was part of her topic, as well as advertisement. The local town papers are used to publicize all meetings so the public are aware that we exist. Also a dis- play to help celebrate 100 years for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and 75 years that 4-1-1 has been presented in Ontario was set up for viewing. Sunday, September 25, 1988 is Women's Institutes Day at the Regional Art Gallery in Lon- don from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mrs. Marg Hams was the chair- man for our Noon Luncheon, which was so attractively served by the Cloverdale W.I. To open the afternoon session, we sang the Hymn of all Nations, and repeated the Mary Stewart Col- lect. Roll call was taken and then Mary Henderson gave a report on A.C.W.W. affairs and how the "Pennies for Friendship are used to help those in need in other coun- tries. Riverview W.I. gave a skit in poem form using the 3 r's, reject, re -use and recycle. Evelyn McNaughton and Margaret Wilson put a lot of thought and humour in this presentation. Laurinda Lang, R.O.S. gave a talk on how 0.M.A.F. has changed in the past 100 years. We had another singsong and Fran Hyatt installed the new slate of of- ficers. Suzanne Clarke reported on the Federation of Agriculture. The farm families have to stick togeth- er to keep farming on an uphill trend. A report was given on Family and children's services. Many chil- dren are out there looking for a home. How can we help? Mrs. Tony Verboom reported on the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario. Things needed are coloring books, crayons, birthday presents finger puppets, wrapping paper and cards ctc. Maybe your Institute can have a meeting set aside to collect these items. Farm Safety is always needed around the farm, implements, and the home. Mrs. Jack McLachlan re- ported safety can never be taken for granted. Mrs. Glenna Ladell, Program Co- ordinator gave her report. GRADUATE - Helen and Lloyd Hodgins are proud to announce the graduation of their son, Stuart Lloyd, with a Bachelor of Mathemat- ics degree from the University of Waterloo. He graduates from the co-op program in Honours Computer Science with the Information Sys- tems option. Stuart was awarded the J. Alan George award for stu- dent leadership by his graduating class.
