The traffic is back too, but cash registers are ringing, so no one Complains. The water was too cold for anyone but polar bears, the sun- bathers were out to soak up the rays, and cottagers -were busy at work in their gardens. Nursery stocks disappears at a fantastic rate this time of year, as gardens burst into bloom. It even smells like summer, with the scent of steaks and hamburgers sizzling on the barbecue, floating on the breeze. After dark, the pun- gent tang of gunpowder can be de- tected, as small, private fireworks displays arc enjoyed, up and down the beaches, in kids -sand boxes; by families celebrating this first and most eagerly anticipated holiday of summer. The official door-to-door campaign from Grand Bend core arca south to the cut turned over 54,426.63 to the Lambton Unit. The figure is up 51,100 dollars from last year's cam- paign. - Jean Wilson from Forest was on hand to receive the Grand Bend cheque last week. Township donation A special delegation made up of rce directors of the Grand Bend edical Centre, made a very strong resentation to Stephen Council t week. At this meeting, the council de- ded to donate $3,000.00 to the nd on behalf of the residents liv- ing in Stephen (Grand Cove Estates primarily) who utilize the Medical Centre, said Reeve Tom Tomes. A donation from Stephen Twp., in the amount of S3,000.00 has gratefully received by Tcd Hunt, Larry Cole, and Grant Taylor. Carm I The sacrament of confirmation was celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church op Thurs- lay, May 19.• Bishop J. M. Sher- , ock of the London Diocese con- lrmed- S6 young people from fount Carmel and Precious Blood schools. The Bishop was assisted by Fa - her Remark, Father Gary Goyeau, pastor of Mount Carmel and Father Paul Beck; pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Grand Bcnd. After questioning the young candidates and commending them for the qual- ity of their instruction, their spon- sors escorted each youngster to re- ceive confirmation from Bishop Sherlock. . Music was provided for the 'ser- vice by the combined Mount Car - mei and Precious Blood choirs, un- der the direction of Mrs. Susan Kraftcheck. Afterwards, parents were given an opportunity to take photographs of the Bishop with the children and thcir sponsors. The Catholic Women's League of Mount Carmel and Precious Blood served refreshments to the large crowd of family and friends in the school gym. . • oblect,ve. WI visit rehab centre On Tuesday afternoon, May 17, 16 members of the Grand Bend Women's Institute visited the Blue - _water Centre, near Goderich. -The ladies were welcomed at thc door by a PR person and taken to the board room. here a few items of business wcrc discussed. The June meeting was planned, and four -vot- ing delegates were chosen to attend the district annual at Hensall, on may 19. The WI wcrc divided intci groups of four and four resident boys acted !'cry capably as tour guides of the building. This was followed by a question/answer session. The PR person and tour boys answered all questions. The boys all agreed that the staff was very supportive and did everything they could to help them. They really appreciated all the fine facilities available to make their rehabilitation easier. The boys arc on a four -level sys tem, the highest being the Gold -Bar. They attain this level by dem- onstrating trust and responsibility and as a reward they receive more privileges. No matter how re- strained the relations become, the boys must continue to keep com- munications open with thcir par- ents at all times. It is very impor- tant that parents support their child and always tic there when he or she need help. The ladies felt this was an afternoon well spent. Beach petition By Roberta Walker GRAND BEND - A new group. has been formed in the Grand Bcnd area, made up of concerned citizens from the Bcnd, particular residents of Gibbs Park, and the local busi- nessmen, called "Citizens for a Public Beach." They have retained legal counsel and arc studying the possible effects of a privately %owned beach in the town of Grand Bend. A hewing date on the disput- ed ownership of the beach, between a private citizen and the .town, has been set for May 31, scheduled to -last for eight weeks. The arca in dispute is the entire South Beach, from the cnd of Main Street to the pier, from the water line to the property lines of Bonnie Doone and Sanders Tavern, includ- ing the parking lots.
