KIPPEN - A Family and Consu-
mer Affairs meeting was held on
Wednesday May 18 in Hensall
United Church with Ruby Triebner,
as hostess and Grace Eyre as co -
hostess. Thcrc were 13 members
and one guest speaker present.
President Grace Drummond wet
corned everyone and handed out the
new programs for the coming year
and thanked Helen MacLean fordo-
ing them for us.
Grace then gave a reading.
"Mothers Are Made OF'. The fine
for failing to wear a pin was 10
cents, Mary Broadfoot and Char-
lotte McDowell had to pay. Public
Relations Officer Margaret Hog-
garth presented a pin to new mem-
ber Sadie Hoy and welcomed her to
Kippen East Women's Institute.
Roll call was answered by mem-
bers mentioning a home improve-
ment they would like to make. An-
swers were varied - a step needed to
be lowered, one member wanted
her bathroom moved to a different
place, one wanted clew windows to
the cast, another's bathroom was in
the process of being renovated, one
member was looking for .a new
ceiling, another longed for a hot
tub, one needed more shelves in
closets, one member wanted an
awning over the south window of
the family room, one needed a patio
and door to the east, one fortunate
member was having a whole new
house built and I would like a
ACW meeting
at Kirkton
KIRKTON - The A.C.W. met at
the home of Mrs. Burns Blackler
Thursday evening. Mrs. Garth
Blackler opened the meeting. Mrs.
Bill Schaefer read the scripture and
meditation.
Business meeting followed. Mrs.
Garth Blackler introduced the Speak-
er; Mrs. Mervin Shute who showed
excellent slides of historic sights of
Kirkton and Woodham and gave a
most • interesting paper on the
growth of the Kirkton Bake Shop
(Ilumphrcys) from its beginning
until its closure.
Ethel Copeland thanked Helen and
presented her with a gift. Reverend
Beverley Wheeler closed the meet-
ing. Lunch was served by the host-
ess.
downstairs washroom and an up-
stairs telephone.
Rena Caldwell then introduced the
guest speaker, Mrs. Russell McCal-
lum from St. Mary, who spoke on
her visit to Samoa - a South Pacific
Island, the people there are Polyne-
sian. Her son Ross had settled there
and married a Samoan girl named
Eseta, which means Easter. The
family have now settled in Canada.
Samoa is not commercialized, no
one needs to starve because fruit and
vegetation is lush. People move
slowly, no hurry, probably due to
climate. People wear 'Lava Lava' a
piece of material wrapped around the
body. Plantations grow coconuts
and bananas. Tombs were above the
ground and set on peoples lawns.
Mrs. McCallum was thanked by
Rena Caldwell and presented with a
gift.
Margaret Hoggarth presented the
motto "People are lonely because
they build walls instead of bridges."
Helen MacLean conducted a con-
test, "A Farmer's Love Letter".
Rena Caldwell gave the courtesy re-
marks. The president closed with
reading "Little Boy Lost". Phyllis
Parsons and Helen MacLean served
a tasty lunch.
Kippen East hosted the 85th dis-
trict annual meeting of Huron
South held on Thursday May 19 at
Hensall Public School. Kippen was
in charge of the cake and refresh-
ments provided on registration.
Grace Drummond, Mona Alderdice
and Hilda Payne acted as voting del-
egates for Kippen East. Margaret
Hogarth gave words of welcome.
Seven other members attended: Dor-
othy Bell, Grace Eyre, Ruby Trieb-
ner, Mary Broadfoot, Thca Wisch,
Helen MacLean and Rena Caldwell.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir:
It seems that another part of the
history of Hensall is going to fall
victim to the wrecker's hammer,
namely the small cottage recently
owned by the Windovers. I would
like to tell the readers a little about
said dwelling.
Long ago, before the railway was
ever built through Hensall, people
named Carr (Kerr) owned that prop-
erty and much more. When the men
were working -on the railroad they
stopped to have thcir lunch and
drinks of good Cold water. Mrs.
Gertrude Flcar and Mrs. Irene Ken-
nedy are two descendants of the
above family and could tell you
more than I about the family. I re-
llii mbcr "Aunt Jean Carr" as she.
<, called by many children and
older- people.
In later years my grandfather Da-
vid Robinson owned the property
• arch Then my mother Mrs. James
Sangster became the next owner.
Several people have since owned
the property but "This Old House"
sell means a great deal to me. My
husband and.I spent tide first six
years of our married life there and
our first three children began their
lives there.
1 would suggest this house is
more of a heritage building thaft the
town hall on which we know not
how many thousands have been
spent. Where and when will it stop?
Pcrhaps we shall see when the next
election arrives.
The cottage purchased by the
town, I understand is to be demo-
lished •to make access to the exist-
ing "Junk Pile" or if one.prcfers to
