Times-Advocate, 1988-05-25, Page 13May 25, 1988 Ames - Serving South Huron, North Middlesex dvocate & North Lambton Since 1873 Page 18 Schade, Cox combine for Juniors no-hitter Doug Schade and Terry Cox shone a bright light on the future of Co-op Juniors Thursday night when they combined for a no-hitter to lead their team to a 4-1 win against Exeter Express in seven innings. It is the first time Exeter's Junior team has defeated the Seniors in the Great Lakes Men's Baseball League. Express were kept off-balance by four year veteran Schade and second year Cox. Their hardest hit was de- livered by Dave Shaw who knocked a fly ball out into right field to end the game. Don Currell, coach of the Jun- iors, was pleased with their first performance of the season. "The kids got some really timely hits,"Currell said. "They played really well for their first time out. "If that's an indication of where we're going, we're going to have a pretty good year." Seniors took the lead by getting a run off Schade. After a lead-off walk, Express eventually scored on a wild pitch. It was 1-0 for Express when Schade left and Cox came in to pick up the win with three innings of hitless relief. Hit by a wild pitch, Darcy Mar- tin found his way to first base in the bottom of the fifth. He advanced to second on a single by Scott Rus- sell and then Steve Neil brought. him home with a single. A single by Darren Neil and an Express error which put Brent O'Brien on first pushed Steve Neil 'into scoring position and then Jeff Butler singled to bring both Neils home. - In the sixth, Schade walked, then stole second and third. A single by Cox allowed Schade to score. Dave Shaw kept Juniors off the bags and was nursing his own no- hitter until the fifth when the bot- tom dropped out. Dave Atthill came in to relieve Shaw. Co-op Juniors see action tor&ht (Wednesday May 25) when They travel to Strathroy. Thursday they play host to Lakeside. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Express play Seaforth May 31, but they will also be appearing in the Exeter Inndians slo-pitch tour- ney scheduled for this weekend. The two teams, among five 'new -comers to the Huron -Perth La- dies Fastball League, met the de- fending champions this week and suffered withering losses. Greys downed Parkhill 11-1 Tues- day night (May 17) before shutting out Corbett 17-0 Wednesday night. The wins leave Exctcr undefeated in three games this season -- a good indication that they may repeat last years sterling performance. Heidi Elliott and Patti Down shared the pitching duties against Parkhill giving up seven hits and allowing one tun. Greys took a two run lead in the first inning after Tammy Mathers got on base on an error, went to second on a pass ball and then scored when Tess Nethery singled. Nethery later scored when Sandy Fremlin hit a triple. Greys added five runs in the sec- ond inning. Alice Dietrich advanced to first after being hit by a pitch. She moved into scoring position tween the two Exeter baseball teams Thursday. Junior beat Express for the first time ever by a score of 4-1. through early schedule when Mathers doubled: Nethery then -knocked out a triple to bring . both runners home. Elliott kept things rolling with an RBI single, bringing in Nethery. • Sandra Burns then scored on an er- ror to make it 7.1. Greys went scoreless in the third, but managed three runs in the fourth. Elliott started the inning with a walk and then she and Bums scored on an error. Fremlin singled then managed to score when Brenda Bell singled. Nethery was the only Grey to score in the fifth inning. She came in after Fremlin hit a single. Wednesday night, Greys pounded Corbett late in the -game, scoring five runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to mercy their op- ponents. Nethery started the barrage, hit- ting a triple in her first time up to bat. She scored when Elliott sin- gled. Mathers followed with a dou- ble, then scored on an RBI double from Burns. In the second inning, Gail Bower- man was the only Grey to score af- ter she tripled and came home on an error. Mathers and Burns got on base with singles in the third, then Bon- nie Caldwell hit a triple to bring both runners in then later scored herself. Nethery and Mathers were walked in the fourth and a single by Burns loaded the bases. Caldwell came up with a triple for the sccond time that night to bring in the runners. Caldwell and Dietrich later scored to -make the score 12-0 in favour of Greys. The punishment continued for Corbett in the fifth when five con- secutive singles pushed runners around the bases for five more runs. Four Panthers advance to OFSSA LONDON - Four of the twenty athletes who took part in WOSSA competition at Western Wednesday and Thursday will be going on to the OFSSA, the regional Finals. Still competing are Sandra Relouw who placed third in the Long Jump and third in the Triple Jump, Rob Wonnacott, who placed fifth in the High Jump, Lori Parker who also placed fifth in the High Jump and Trina Poortinga who placed sixth in the High Jump but will be going as an alternate. Just missing out on going to OFSSA were Scott Regier who placed seventh in the Long Jump and seventh in the 400 metres, and Dave Schwindt who placed seventh in the.Javelin. The regional finals will be held in Kitchener. TRIPLE JUMP -- Sandra Relouw gets good height in the last part of a triple jump during WOSSA competitions at Western Thursday. Relouw was one of four South Huron athletes to qualify for OFSSA. She placed third in triple jump. Centennials recover from deficit; down Nairn NAIRN - Exctcr Centennials re- mained undefeated in their second game of the season when they hand- ed Nairn a 3-2 loss on the road in Western Ontario Soccer League ac- tion. Despite several excellent scoring .chances, Centennials fell behind 1-0 after Nairn scored near the 30 min- ute mark"of the first half. Failing to work together on the attack, Exctcr lacked movement off the ball but they came out in the second half with the full intent to improve that aspect of their game. Ten minutes into the second half, . Centennials tied the game on the strength of a goal by Jerry VanDc- Waile. Applying pressure with a well- balanced attack, Centennials were rewarded again when Maurice VanDcWalle put the ball in the net FfsallallirdrIt after being set up by Dale Regier. That goal gave Exeter a 2-1 edge over Naim. Jerry VanDcWalle then gave Cen- tennials some rdom to breathe with his sccond goal• of the game. Exeter goalie Craig Winbow held the line with a good performance in net as Nairn pressed late in the game. The home team's persistence paid • off, forcing an Exctcr mistake. A shot to clear the Exctcr net was driven into the goal by a Centenni- al. Exctcr was able to hold out for the win. Centennials arc home in their next match Sunday (May 29) when they host London Real West.
