SAFE HOMES - Friday's press conference at Exeter United Church featured several speakers to introduce the
Safe Homes for Huron program to the area. The board of directors for Safe Homes are, from left, police chief Larry
Hardy. staff associate Bev Robinson, Rev. Duke Vipperman, co-ordinator Sharon Wurm, from the coalition for de-
velopment Mary Lee, Rev. Deborah Carter. and SHDHS guidance counsellor Ric Graham.
T.assist homeless Huron teens
such a program existed in South
Huron. It showed that in the entire
county 188 youths found them-
selves in a homeless situation in
the course of the year. This gives
Safe Homes a figure on which to
base their organization.
"We should be ready to deal with
50 (homeless)," said Graham.
Graham said that the S65,000 at
. the organization's disposal should
be able to sustain the program well
past its first year. The project will
begin with the co-ordinator and five
volunteer families. If more host
families are required, they can be
added later.

Homes for information can call

"It is wonderful to see the level of
planning, dedication and outreach
here in South Huron County," said
the program's co-ordinator, Sharon
Wurm.
The program will also work with
the county unit of Family and So-
cial Services to both train and sup-
port the volunteer families.
Graham, who sits on' the project's
board of directors, described the pro-
Fram as an experimental pilot pro-
tect because nothing on this scale
has ever been tricd in a rural area
before. He noted that its cxperi-
mental nature. was partly responsi-
ble for attracting the government
funding. The ministry will be
closely watching Safe Homes' de-
velopment to detcrmiric if it can be
put into effect elsewhere.
"Hopefully if it goes as well as
we're anticipating, then within a
year or two we'll go county -wide,"
Graham predicted. He praised the
•program as offering an alternative
to the self-destructive paths usually
followed by teens who have.no-
whcre to turn.
Graham cited the 1986 study
which originally proved a need for

purchase of the beach.
Council, then under the guidance
of Reeve Bob Sharen, claimed the
village owned the beach,by "adverse
