The Olympia has arrived
Monday night I had the hon-
our of taking a photograph of
the South 1-luron Rcc .Centre's
brand new Olympia ice resurfac-
cr. With the help of Tony Jones,
we arranged it under the bright-
est light on the ice and set up a
small stage behind it so that
contributors could be sten with-
out blocking the view of that
noble, diesel -free machine. •
While we worked, I noticed
that the new shinty beast had
ob.viously added a .new dimen-
sion to Tony'sjob. He was
more than happy to show it off.
Reil Director Lynne Farquhar
also had -a big smile on her face
whenever she looked in -the di-
rection of the Olympia._,,
And well she should. -
Lynne has given recognition
to a lot of people.. for their con-
tributions to the effort over the
past few months. She d serves
some of that recognition herself.
Ev.•ery week, she has .len
busy cooking up one schwmc or
another to attract attention' for
the cause. -
A little negotiating here, a
little challenge there, some
heavy duty organization, so
many pictures that by now she
must have flashbulb burn on her
face; and presto -- one brand new
ice machine. Of course, every-
body
involved knows it wasn't
as easy as it looks.
Along with all the people who
contributed to the effort, thc
Winter Sports Council can be
proud of the outcome of the pro-
ject. --
While I took the picture, I
Couldn't help thinking of the
machine as a little more than
just metal and rubber.
Though the groups involved
from time to time find them-
selves at odds with one another,' -
they have proved what can be ac-
complished when we work to-
gethcr as a community.
For me, a new -comer to town,
a guy who missed the building
of the Rec Centre and countless
other public projects, that ice
machine is a big symbol .on

Congratulations to all who
made it possible. -

The gym at South Huron Dis-
trict High School was filled with
some of the finest basketball
players in 1 turon and Perth coun-
ties Friday when the Junior and
Senior all-star basketball games
were held. - -
The Seniors from Huron lost
85-59 to the stronger Perth
squad, but ourJunior'tcam came
out on top -- not 'by much, but
just enough -- winning 62-61.
Rob Bilcski and Mark Lomas
were the o`nty-[wit 'representa-
tives from SHDIIS on the Sen-
ior team. Bilcski turned in a
characteristically good perfor-
mance, notching 16 points in
the effort while Lomas came
close to matching his team
mate's point production with 10
of his own. •
lan Vcrbcek and Dave
O'Connor represented South Hu-
ron for the Junior team. Verbcck
scored 14 points to make his
school look good while
O'Connor added six.
Basketball coach Terry
O'Rourke said Monday that he
was pleased with the way the
boys performed.

Flyers coach Brian Hart said- he
was initially worried about the fact
that his team hadn't played together
much over the course of the season,
but he notes they will have the ad-
vantage of freshness over Mo-
hawks.
As far as motivation for the team,
the Hardy Cup is motivation
enough.
"You know you're going for a na-

these guys have been there before,
so they know what we're up
against," Hart said. "We're going to
be fresh for it." -
