Digital telephones by
fall
Upgrading the Tucker -smith mu-
nicipal telephone system by install-
ing a host digital switch in the Bay-
field office and renultcs in t lensall,
Clinton and Seaford) cut into the
1987 profits. The balance sheet for
the year ending December 31
showed that 1987 earnings were
$107,045, compared to 5187,1 35
the previous year.' The total cost of
purchasing and 'installing the new
equipment will tic about -
$1,500,000.
Expenses for the year included) in-
terest charges to finance this under-
taking. On the credit side, the
equipment under capital lease added
$750,217 to the system's fixed as-
sets.
"The --system is sound financial-
ly", the auditor informed subscri-
bers at the annual meeting on
March 22 held in the Stanley COM -
Commission chairman Dave
Brock gave May 14 as tl►e target
-date to cut Hensall into the new
system, The building .to house the
remote switch for Seaford' should
be ready the end of March, and Sea -
forth will be cut in by late -Septem-
ber to complete the change. The
digital network should be complete
by fall..
- Clinton has been on the new sys-

telephone subscribers who.had the
first three digits of their numbers
changed from 482 to 233 and found
themselves listed after in -town
Clinton numbers in last year's Lon-
don :and arca telephone directory
will be happy to know they will
be intecratcd with other Clinton
telephone users in the 1988 direc-
tory.

still discussing what rate to charge
for a private line when the system
is fully operational. A maximum
mileage cost is being considered.
Brock did not give a direct an-
swer to two subscribers who want-
ed to know why the subscribers'
list is not published like a voters'
list and available for anyone to sec.

at the 1986 annual meeting to al-
low anyone who has been a_pertna-
nent resident and property owner in
the township for 10 years and has
had continuous telephone service
for that time to apply to become a
subscriber.. -
Brock was acclaimed to a further
three-year term. Two new subscri-
bers, Arnold Taylor and Robert
Cooper, had filed applications to
serve out thc-two years remaining
of the term- of Emmerson Cole-
man, who had sold his property
and resigned from the commission.
Robert Cooper was declared the
winner in an election by secret bal-
lot.

Venturers tour. Toronto sports fair
On Sunday, March 13 the first
Hcnsall Venturers went to Toronto
Sports Fair in Toronto.
This trip has become a yearly
tradition of the group. The six
Venturers enjoyed the opportunity
to look at and purchase some new
equipment.
United Church
Passion Sunday services were
well attended at Hcnsall United
Church.
Easter services will be held on
Thursday March 31 at 7.p.m., Eas-
ter sunrise service at 7 a.m. on
April 3, and Easter worship service
at 11 a.m. on April 1
The annual beef barbecue will be
held on Thursday, April 14 at the
Hensall United- Church. Sittings
are at 5:00 and 6:30. Tickets are
available now from U.C.W. mem-
bcrs.
The Bible Study Group will
meet on Tuesday at 10 a.m. "
, The two lovely Hydrangea plants
at the front door of the church were
placed- there compliments of the
Hensall and District Horticultural
Society to help the church celebrate
Easter.
Gymnastics
Members of the Hensall Gymnas-
tics Club had the opportunity to
strut their stuff on Wednesday even-
ing. A large audience of parents and
friends were on hand to watch the
many youngsters perform their rou-
tines. Teachers Starr Jesney and
Leigh Barnard did a great job with a
large and enthusiastic group.
Thc Club would like to thank
Hensall Public School for the use

ing as well as all df the parents who

don. Whitlock spoke to the large
audience on how to join the Master
Gardeners Program. He gave tips
on kinds of plants. and bushes- that
we should consider adding to our
village gardens and flower beds. He
also spoke on ways to improve and
care for Hensall's wooden flower.

Dave Kyle was high man with 327,
followed by Bruce Watson 290 and
Alf Ross.
Shuffling is every Tncsday at
1:30 at the Hcnsall Arena.

Monday morning residents en-
joyed a relaxing tea party and time
of reminiscing in the sun room.
Hcnsall United Church ladies visit-
ed and played bingo in the after-
noon. Thc residents really appre-
ciated the special prizes provided
by the ladies.
Tuesday afternoon we welcomed
Reverend Kucpfcr,as he led our
worship service. Thank you also to
volunteer pianist Phillippa
S tccklc.
Wednesday morning we played
games, one of which was "Bat the
Balloon". It's amazing how trying
to hit the balloons with the paddles
can loosen up stiff arms. After all
that activity we didn't feel guilty
when jft the afternoon we made
chocolate bars and snacked on them
at Baking Club.
Thursday afternoon Queensway
Rest Home residents had an inter-
esting outing' as they toured
Stccklcs Green Houses and enjoyed
the sights and scents. of spring,
Easter lilies, azaleas and gerani-
ums. Thank you to Daisy Bara-
clough, Velma Robinson, Bernice
Ford and Linda Bedard for assisting
with thisouting. Thank you also
to our hosts David and Carol

Bounty" as a little preparation for

Resident council met Friday
morning and discussed our special
events for April. A highlight will
be our trip to Garden Bros. Circus
in London on April 15.
Friday afternoon Pitcailn Island
was featured at our international
Day. We were fortunate to have
many artifacts on • display. We
learned a great deal about this little
known Polynesian Island in the
South Pacific. Following our .in-
formation session we enjoyed fresh
fruit salad with kiwi and chilled
pineapple juice.
