Times -Advocate, March 23, 1988 AUXILIARY SWEATERS —.Exeter Legion Peewees were presented with a new set of sweaters recently by the Ladies Legion Auxiliary. Annie Lawson holds one of the sweaters (right) while Dorothy Pfaff (centre) presents Jason Heywood with a team plaque. Coach John Kernick and player Fred Steciuk (wearing white sweater) look on. Hawks have internal grumbling Continued from page IA , that they were not informed of the - late practice. The executive mem- ber also suggested Geoff Slater and Clarke Singer had quit the team. Asked if he was worried that his remarks might be coming ata bad time of year, Rook stuck to his guns. The team's not playing as good as it could and maybe this will pick the team up and maybe it won't, but it can't get any worse," he said. Ron, Bogart, president of the Hawks, declined to make a com- ment on Rook's statements, ex- plaining that nothing had been, said about the matter at an im- promptu executive meeting after Friday's game. Dave Bogart expressed Surprise when confronted with Rook's comments. "If he's (Rook) that upset I think the courteous thing to do would have been to confront me before he -went to the press," Bo- gart said Monday. "If he feels that strongly about what I'm doing, there are two routes to take. He could either lead a motion to get me to leave, or he could resign himself if he's not happy with the way things are go- ing." - Bogart admits he made a mis- take when he criticized the team harshly after a poor performance against Brussels in the later part of the .season, but he maintains •his other comments have been justified. - He is unaware of parents who have grievances against him. "If there are parents .upset, they're hiding it." Bogart defends his performance as a coach, noting that pressure is part of :he game. "I don't think I'm putting any undo pressure on them. The only thing -I stress is that they imple- ment -what they learn in practice and give 100 percent when they're out on the ice," Bogart said. As for claims that, players arc quitting, Bogart notes that Singer spent two days in the hospital with an ear infection and that the team is in continual touch with his father for updates on the con- dition. Slater -was in the line-up for the final -game of the Mitchell series Friday night. Of thc party, Bogart claims it was to be a-_ victory party held only if Hawks beat Mitchell in game four. - , "The players were upset because. they didn't beat -Mitchell, but they knew if they didn't win, there -wouldn't be_ any party," Bogart said. Seaforth snowmobile team The Winter, Olympics wasn't the only sporting event in which a per- son could win gold medals this winter, and the members of Team Fun - the Seaforth area's oval racing snowmobile team - got it's share of recognition this year. Bill Anderson, of Seaforth, and John Munn, of Hcnsall, arc the two drivers- for thc local snowmobile club. They arc helped out by Craig Millar, of Londcsborough, who is their mechanic; and George Morri- son, of Mt. Bridges, who manages the -team and docs a lot of the pub- lic relations work. Bill and John drive 1988 Arctic Cats Bill in the "B" Stock class and John in the "C" Stock class. They arc sponsored by Country Corners, an Arctic Cat dealer in Mt. Carmel. In addition Bill is also sponsored by Easter Market, Cana- - dian distributers of Arctic Cats. For Team Fun the snowmobile season starts long before the snow flies. Test runs wcrc made this year at the grass drags in Seaforth, and following the grass drags Bill took his sled to Eagle River, Wisconsin for oval racing on wood chips. Thc first oval race on icc was back in Eagle River on December 20. Small things that went wrong with the machines kept Team Fun out of the running, and its drivers didn't do very well. "It was our first year on Arctic Cats," Bill explains. But by the time the first OSRF (Ontario Snowmobile Racing Fed- eration) race of the year came up in Owen Sound they had. ironed out most of the wrinkles and Bill claimed a second, two thirds, and a fourth. In the club competition Bill, who belongs to the Clinton and District Snowmobile Club, got second; and John, who drives for the Pincridge snowmobile club, placed third. At the World Championship, held in Eagle River on .January 17 and 18, Team Fun competed against the best drivers in North Amcrica. John placed third in the "D" Stock, "and I blew it" adds Bill, who didn't place at the competition. The season had its ups and downs for both drivers, with everything from mechanical troubles to hitting othor drivers keeping thcm down, and Peterborough, Ontario was a typical .example of this. Bill's sus- pension broke during a race, and he had to finish the rage by making slow laps around thc outside. Just being able to finish was a boon, however, as many other drivers couldn't, and Bill came out with third in "A" Stock, fourth in "B" Stock and fourth in club competi- tion. Peterborough was good to John though and he ended up with a first in 'B' Stock, second in the 'A' recognized. Stock and sccon n the k.tub com- petition. "We were there" is all the guys want to say about Valcourt Quebec, Where the International Snowmo- bile Festival was held this year. Bill collided with another driver at this competition, and neither of the Team Fun competitors placed. Three weeks later, in Espanola, it was a different story as Bill won the 'A' and 'B' class and placed second in the club competition. John was right behind Bill in all three events as he got second in the 'A' and 'B' and third in the club competition. But recently, at the North Amcri- can World Series, the team had its biggest tric.mphs of the season as Bill took home a gold medal for the 'A' Stock, a silver medal for thc 'B' Stock, and won the club competi- tion. John also finished in the top five as he got fourth in the 'A' Stock, fourth in the 'B' Stock, and fifth in the club competition. With their combined scores from throughout the year, Bill was sec- ond overall in the Ontario Club competition and John was third. After travelling 6,000 miles for competition, the season has finally come to an end for Team Fun. Its members say they have had a pretty good ycar, learned a lot of lessons (about $3,000 worth!), and even got a crowd or two on its feet. • Order By April 8th for Pick up Mid May Day-old chicks available now at Co-op. With goals from Chris Ahrens and Bob Sullivan tinder their belts, Huskies turned a hostile situation into a third marker. Less than one minute was left in the first when John Kernick broke away and shot high at the Durham net. Huskies recovered the puck and found themselves in a two on one situation. Jim Roberts picked up a • nice pass from 'Paul Nixon -and scored to make it 4-3: Wilker added a pair of goals for Mohawks in the second while Bill Glover and Gibbon picked up sin- gles.
