Jim Pfaff, and Scott Burton - - off to Europe
Europe will never be the same.
Two of Exeter's more colourful
Molting Hawks are heading for
Germany for a couple of weeks to
combine their sport with a winter
vacation. Dcfenseman Jim Pfaff
and forward Scott Burton will take
part in the Can -Am World Cup in
Munich in the first week of April.
Can -Am is a Canadian and
American organization associated
with the Canadian Oldtimer's
Hockey Association.
Burton and Pfaff have played in
some tournaments with the East
London Old Sports and were invit-
ed to accompany the small group
of players who arc fortunate
enough to bc able -to - spare the
time and the funds to play in Ger-
many.
- Pfaff estimates it, will cost
about $3,000 each to combine the
eight days of hockey and six days
of sightseeing.
The Old Timers will take a
bcnch of only nine skaters and one
goaltendcr to handle the five
games on the larger-olympic-size
ice surface. At 61 metres by 30
metres, the rink demands a lot
more skating from the players.
"1'ts a long roll around there,"
said Burton.
Pfaff is no stranger to the larger
rinks. 1 -le has played on the
Olympic ice at Lake Placid three
years ago.
"Damn rear need binoculars to
find your wingers," Pfaff re-
marked.
Thirteen teams will compete for
the oldtimers' World Cup, but
none arc from Germany. Six
teams arc from Finland, two from
Norway, and one each from Bos-
ton, Halifax, Belleville and Mani-
toba.
The teams will be ranked accord-
ing to skill and will play a maxi-
mum of five games each.
"I'm really looking forward to it.
I'm really getting exited about it,"
said Pfaff.
Althougth they do not know
what to expect from the European
players, both Pfaff and Burton arc
familiar with the top-notch abili-
tics of thc Boston team:
After the hockey is over, the
pair will enjoy some sightseeing
and skiing along with Pfafl's wife
Karen.
"We're going tor good time
and that's it," said Burton.
"It's a good way to do two
things," added Pfaff, "Play a bit of
hockey and do a bit of sightsee-
ing."
Pfaff hopes to meet some rela-
tives in Germany and Burton
wants to hit the slopes to do some
skiing, something he hasn't done
in 18 years.
Guenther may be out of action
IN NEED OF MORE -- Exeter Hawks Jim Lewis pokes the puck past Hawks won the game 7-2 Tuesday night, but went on to drop the next two

The old third period stall -out has
come back to haunt Exeter Hawks
in their best -of -seven series against
Mitchell in the Western Junior D
semi-final
After taking_a three game lead in
the series with a 7-2 win over
Mitchell Tuesday night, Exctcr al-
lowed a 3-1 lead to slip away in the
third Friday night when they lost 4-
3. That seemed to precipitate a 6-5
loss Sunday under similar circum-
stances.
"Our guys just aren't coming to
the rink prepared," said a frustrated
Mohawks encounter Iittie head coach Dave Bogart Monday.
"It's plain and simple -- we're just
getting out -hustled all the time.
"We just don't seem to have the
killer instinct."
Exeter Hawks performances Fri-
day and Sunday arc reminiscent of
problems the team encountered in
the last leg of the season when a
lack of discipline nearly put them
behind the eightball. The problem
is a mystery to Bogart.
"You should be mentally tough
and mentally prepared at this time
of the year but our guys are the op-
posite. Maybe there's something
they'd rather be doing," Bogart said,
speculating that his team might be
tired of hockey.
To make matters worse, league
leading goalie Dave Rook may be
suspended for three games follow-
ing an incident Sunday. In a display
of bad temper, Rook threw a glove
out on the ice while four Mitchell
players rushed toward the empty
resistance from Durham
Exctcr Mohawks took a two
game lead in their best -of -seven ser-
ies against Durham Huskies this
week with a 9-3 win Friday night
on home ice -and a 6-4 win Sunday
in Durham, despite the loss of head
coach Jim Guenther.
Guenther, who has been suffering
from dizzy spells recently, pulled
himself out of thc game in the sec-
ond period Friday night. The cause
of the problem is a mystery..
Gucnthcr expressed hope that he
would be back behind the bcnch lat-
er this wcck.
Assistant coach Bob Rowc and
manager Doc Campbell have
stepped in to replace Gucnthcr for
the duration of his leave.
"Doc looked after thc defence and
I looked after the forwards and we
did alright," Rowc said Monday.
"We miss Vic (Guenther) though."
Rowc was unimpressed with Dur-
ham's efforts in the first two games
of the series.
"I'm kind of surprised with Dur-
ham that they're not giving us a
better go," Rowc explained. "We
sure didn't expect to be sitting at 2-
0.
"But I'm sure we're not done yet.
That hockey club lust doesn't quit."
Asked if he was worried that Mo-
hawks 'would lay back after the easy
victories, Rowe said the team
should learn from their previous
series.
"We won the first game before in
the last two series and then Ave
found our backs against the wall,"
he said. "That's a position we don't
want to be in against Durham."
Friday night in Exctcr, Durham
goalie Rob Nixon failed to arrive
until 9 p.m. for the game which
was scheduled for an 8:30 start. He
was apparently caught in traffic
coming from Toronto.
• As a result, Nixon had no warm-
up and. it showed.
The game was just 18 seconds old
when Paul Barton pickcd up the
puck, skated over the Durham blue
line and lobbed sn easy shot at Nix-
on. The puck skipped over the hap-
less goalie's stick and Mohawks
were off acid running.
With other first period goals
coming from Dave Randerson and
Quincy Wilker, Exeter took a 3-1
lead into the second.
Huskies only first period goal
was scored by George Campbell.
Randerson and Barton both added
their second goal of the game in the
second to make it 5-1 and then Dale
Gibbon scored his first of two
goals at 18:34 to end the middle
frame.
Mohawks coasted to an easy vic-
tory with third period goals by Gib-
bon, Barry Baynham and Bill Glo-
ver.
Huskies responded weakly with
goals from Chris Ahrens and Bob
Sullivan.
Sunday in Durham
Mohawks allowed Huskies to
creep up on thcm late in the third
when a 6-2 lead was converted into
a 6-4 final, but again, Durham
seemed uninspired.
John Kcrnick gave Exctcr the Icad
in the first period when he scored
from Gibbon and Glover with 4:50
to play in the opener. Kcrnick had a

Exeter net against two defenders.
Rook had been pulled from the
game with 1:30 remaining, giving
Exeter an extra attacker.
"We've got to regain our compo-
sure," -Bogart explained. "We can't
have players coming unglued at the
_seams when • there's a little bit of
pressure on." .
Should Rook be thrown out for
three games, Derrick Martin would
likely take over in net. Bogart is
confident that Martin can do the
job.
"I don't have any hesitation put-
ting Derrick in," Bogart said.
"Maybe this is the chance he de-
serves."
Tuesday night
Mitchell took a 2-0 lead in the
first period on goals by Troy
McMann and Tim Harrow taking
advantage of a slow Exeter start,
but they were unable to maintain
their momcntum going into the
second.
Clarke Singer started off a five
point night with a goal from Jim
Lewis and Steve Gould at 3:24.
Singer had two goals and three as-
sists to his credit Tuesday night.
Gould followed with a pair of
goals at 7:50 and 11:16 to put Ex-
ctcr in the Icad for the first time
that night. Singer drew assists on
both plays.
Before the period ended, Tcrry
Casey and Lewis each added singles
to put Exeter out in front 5-2.
Third period goals from Singer
and Jason -.Leslie built thc final 7-2
score.
Rook made 23 saves in the effort,
while his counter -part, Steve- Su-
pleton, kicked out 26. •
Friday night
Jon O'Connor -gave Exeter a 1-0
lead in the first period Friday night
after he connected with Ted Hod-
gins and Gould to score. That goal
stood until 2:56 of the second whcn
Sports
Gould added a goal from Singer and
Lewis.
Mitchell retaliated at .13:56 when
Smitty Kulafofski scored unassist-
ed.
A goal by Jeff Ansems at 18:04
of the second restored Exeter's two
goal lead after he -picked up a pz:ss
from Hodgins and Jeff Pfaff:
That was it offensively for Exct-
cr.
Mitchell came on strong in the
third, pumping in three unanswered
goals from Kulafofski, Dave
Campbell and Steve Murray and
putting the game out of reach for
Exctcr.
Bogart put his team through a
special midnight skate after the
game Friday night, but it seemed to
have no effect.
With added confidence, Mitchell
played to a 1-1 tic against Exeter in
the _first period of game five Sun-
day. George Pratt was responsible
for Exeter's goal while the Mitchell
marker came from Campbell..
Exeter fell behind in the second,
however, when Kulafofski came to
life and pumped in two goals, out-
stripping the power play single
from Exeter's O'Connor.
Exctcr Hawks showed signs of a '
corm. -hack in the early stages of the
third when goals by Dean Schram
and O'Connor pushed them into a 4-
3 lcad. •
Kulafofski notched his third goal
of the game at 13:11 to tic things
up but Ansems scored u.1assisted at
15:05 to hand the lead back to Exct-
cr.
Mitchell managed to keep their
playoff hopes alive with goals from
Tim Harrow and Murray.
"We've got way more talent than
Mitchell docs, but right now we
just don't have enough guys on the
team willing to follow the game
plan that we followed all season,"
Bogart said.
With Mitchell breathing down
their necks in the best -of -seven ser-
ies, the -Exctcr coach is becoming
increasingly nervous.
"If it goes to seven games, it's
anybody's game (the final). If our
guys don't start to wake up, we may
get past this round, but we're going
to bc golfing pretty soon."
Hawks meet Hawks again Friday
night at the South Huron Rec Cen-
arc.
