Cast reviews school play
The curtain opened...our play had
begun! Our long weeks of work
were to be rewarded at Precious
Blood School on Thursday, Febru-
ary 25. •
Everyone from Grades 5-8 began
learning the songs from "Going
West" during September and during
October we began with auditions.
We had a good response and those
who were reluctant to turn up
helped out backstage Tater on set de-
sign, lighting and curtains. Every-
one from Grades 5-8 had a part in
"Going West" in some way or an-
other. •
The curtain call at. the end went
so well. The entire cast stood on
the stage and sang beautifully "I
Want to Go West". Each member
of the cast had pride sparkling in
his eyes and everybody looked very
excited as the audience applauded
loudly...and the curtains closed.
by Carol Acton, Grade 8
When I first auditioned for the
play,. I was one of two boys in the
grade 7,8 class. I was Bart Slade,
the big tough guy. from the west
who was "wanted" for everything.
You might see me on the next
commercial. Just kidding. But ac-
cording to my family, I. was pretty
good. I think so too!!
Actor Scott Parsons,
grade 7
You'll never believe what we've
been going through this past week.
Run throughs of our play "Going
West" using costumes, props,
make-up, lights, and we even video
taped it. Then on Wednesday we
performed our first show in front of
Mt. Carmel and our own school. It
went perfectly. •
Then the big performance came. I
was really nervous. I came early and
got my costume and make-up on. A
little while later (which seemed like
hours) Act I began. When I,came
on to sing, I sang my very best. At
the end of my song, on my finish-
ing note, a baby joined in! It went
smoothly and everyone did a great
job; I was so happy.
Erin Kraftcheck, grade 7
During the few months of putting
the play together, we've learned a
lot from memorizing lines, learning
songsand putting our costumes to-
gether. The very last performance
was the best one. 1 just couldn't be-
lieve how people were laughing; it
was unbelievable.
Jill Sararas, grade 7
I was stage manager so I saw or
should I say heard the whole thing;
it was fabulous! Nobody missed a
line and the songs•wcrc perfect. On
cast call Christie and I gave flowers
to Mrs. Mcdve and Mrs. Tripp. But
when thc curtains closed everyone
in the cast let out a loud yahoo or
just scrcarircd.
Stage Manager Rita Mike,
grade 8
When I heard that I had to sing a
verse all by myself, I thought I was
a goner. But my friends helped me
out. As the curtain pulled it was as
if a magnetic force was pulling me.
Then when it carne time to sing
my song I was so nervous. But as
the play moved on so did I. My
friends told me I sang well.
Christie Bechard, grade 7
We've been drawing, painting and
hanging props for thc school play
"Going *West" for about two
weeks while those "characters" arc
singing and dancing on stage. Well
I've got to admit we didn't do much
school work and we also got to lis-
ten to music.
Here I am ushering now for the
play I've sten four times already! A
lot of people arc coming to sec this
play, I hope they like it.
The audience Iovcd it and so did 1.
It was the best performance they
have ever done!
Set Design Crew Greg
Agnew, grade 7
After all the drawing, painting
and cutting, I found out thc curtain
man, Jeff Latulippe, had broken his
foot. Ile would he unable to attend
the performance. I decided since
made a wrong decision before, that
I should do the lighting and cur-•
tains to feel part of the cast.
• When I did the curtains for a few
days it really got to me. All I did
was open and close the curtain
twice!
However on the night of the big
performance, my feelings began to
change.
I will never forget that night be-
cause I have never felt so close to a
bunch of people who have worked
so hard and devoted so much of
themselves to just one play. It will
stay with me forever.
Member of the- Crew Sivi-
chay Senghkounmany,
grade 7
1 got here and went in to get my
make-up on, I took a scat and put it.
on. Then 1 went to put on my dress.
And got ready for the big night. We
stayed out of the halls. Finally Mrs.
Mcdve _called "First Act". We all
hurried out. The first act went like
clock work. The second act was
very good too! At the last curtain
call everyone in thc cast yelled and
then we -went out to meet people. It
was great! We knew we could do it!
Anyway there were 180 people in -.
the audience so it was easy!
Actress Rochelle Geoffrey,
grade 5
After more than three montns of
hard work, time and effort, last
night went great!
In act one I was a girl in a crowd -
who carne to sec the medicine show
with John Lionel' Langtrec and Dia-
mond Lil and her singing compan-
ions. There was lots of laughter and
clapping throughout the whole act.
Actress Jennifer Acton,
grade S
Jenny and I had to do this ceremo-
nial dance. I also had a part in a
crowd scene. I didn't get any main
parts or speaking parts, hut I en-
joyed my parts very much.
Actress Linda Jacobs,
grade 5
February 25 was probably the
most thrilling night of my life.
First 1 entered and said my speech.
Tlrcn came the song whcrc 1 shook
the living daylights out of Dude!
Everybody laughed! In the future the.
play will help me to do theatre, act-
ing and speeches.
I feel that I gained in being able
to pity attention and I learned how
to act like another character.
Actor Shawn Jacob, -
grade 6 .
Every student was involved in at
least one aspect of the production as
well as every member on staff.
Practices were long, tedious and for
those not on stage all the tirne, bor-
ing. But to the credit of students,
they answered every call, accepted
every direction and when -.none was
given, improvised on their own. To
them goes the applause.
The set and stage crew also put
on a stellar performance, albeit, un-
seen. Thcy put in -hard hours of
drawing, painting, cutting, arrang-
ing and the many invisible jobs
needed for a successful production.
Many wished that they would have
volunteered for a "cushy" job of act-
ing. But they learned more about
cooperation and team work in one
month than in the five months be-_
fore the production. The fruits of
their labour -go almost unnoticed by
an appreciative audience.
