Breen, 88 Nelson St., Hensall, lost his case when he act- ed as his own lawyer defending a chargeof dangerous driving, in pro- vincial court in Exeter on March 9. Londoners Lloyd Sloan and Wayne Smith testified they had been operating' their motorcycles in a "staggered formation" heading north on Highway 4 about 2:00 a.m. on July 18 when a car pro- ceeding south veered over and forccd them on to the shoulder of the road -between Hensall and Ex- eter. The cyclists turned around, caught up with the car and tried to wave it to a stop, but the car speeded up. -The two cyclists turned in at the OPP office, but it was locked. An argument ensued when Breen and his passenger drove into the lot 100. Sloan and Smith finally broke away and resumed their northward journey, only to be followed by Breen who again tried to 'force them off the road. They pulled in behind a northbound car for -protec- tion, and reported the incident to a police officer in Clinton. Judge R.G.E. Hunter discounted statements from Breen and his wit- ncss, saying the accused had been playing cat and mouse with the two motorcycle riders. Breen was convicted of dangerous driving, fined S750 with 90 days to pay or 60 days in jail, and had his driver's licence suspended for 12 months. Another Hensall resident, _Daniel Bedour of 176 Oxford St., pleaded guilty to impaired driving. A subsequent breathalyzer test gave two readings of 193. Bedour was fined S750 with six months to pay, and had his licence suspended for 12 months. Patrick N. Kyle, also of Hensall, received a suspended sentence and 12 months probation for breaking into the office at 111 Queen St. on Janu- ary 30 and stealing a telephone an- swering machine and a cordless phone. The items were later recov- ered. Kyle was also ordered to complete 50 hours of community service during: bis -probationary+ peri- od. :Staffa By MRS J TEMPLEMAN An encouraging numbcr of resi- dents and friends gathered in the Family Life Centre of Hibbert United Church for a community fo- rum on one of society's pressing is- sues - the -management of.garbagc. Special speakers were Ian Ncss- Jack, Environmental Officer from London, Gary Kemp, Roads super- intendent for Hibbert Township and Peter Huiterrta, a Logan Township Councillor. Two facts became clear: the costs of establishing a new land -fill site are -tremendous; sorting and recy- cling garbage prolongs the life of a current site. Those present ex- pressed their willingness to sort their own garbage. The need to de- crease the volume of- our throw- aways was also noted. Discussion continued over a 4 snack served by the committee for the evening - Joast and Sine Drost, Valerie Scott, Calvin and Gwen Christie and Bert and Margaret Day - nand. Our congratulations- to all those in the community who were recip- ients of medals and certificates at the Celebration 88 Awards presenta- tion. - World Day of Prayer The ladies from Hibbert United Church joined the Cromarty Pres- byterian Church ladies for the World Day of Prayer Service on Friday.
