The Stan -Lee Club met on March
1 at the complex. Again, they had a
small turnout of only 21. Many of
their members are still in the south.
Mervin Hayter is a patient in Uni-
versity Hospital and evcrone wishes
him well. .
The club received more informa-
tion on the Senior's Tri -County
Games to be held in Stratford in
June. They are preparing for some
participation there. Most of the dis-
cussion of the evening was in plan-
ning for the "Zone 8" Spring Rally
which the club is hosting on April
13 at the complex.
The door prize was won by Allen
Armstrong. Euchre and !unch fin-

in the Varna Area. Total amount
collected, excluding the village, is
$733.00 which is around $200.00
more than 1987.
Varna -Goshen World Day
of Prayer
Lois Scott and Marilynn Callan
of St. John's United Church in
Stratford were the speakers at Var-
na -Goshen' World Day of Prayer
meeting in Goshen Church. They
were in, a group of eight who went
to "Haiti to build a ccmcnt block
house through the Habitat for Hu-
manity program. Rcv. Bruce Ea-
ton's daughter 1.imbcrley is in-
volved in this ministry. Bruce is
the well -drilling missionary, at
present assisting Rcv. Scott at St.

There arc six million people in
Haiti, which is half the size of
Nova Scotia. They are among the
poorest in the world, with an aver-
age income of $380 per year. Fifty
percent are illiterate, they suffer
from many diseases, and sanitation
is poor, although .their clothes are
spotless. A dentist in the arca of the
village the group was in had given
the children toothbrushes which
they used conscientiously, but they
were cleaning their teeth and wash-
ing in an open drain which con-
tained raw sewage.
A woman with two children who
lived in a hut near thc men's cottage
appeared to have only a sleeping
mat and a cooking pot. Most hous-
es would have a table and one
chair. Everything from fresh -killed
meat to fabrics, prepared food, fruit
and bread was sold in open air mar-
kets. There are no flies in Haiti,
but there are mosquitos, cockroach-
es, mice and tarantualas.
Because of their beliefs, the peo-
ple don't like to be photographed.
The adults mostly stayed at a dis-
tance, but the children were curi-
ous.
The Stratford group lived in
Kampesh and travelled to the work
site in a Toyota four-wheel drive
truck, necessary to get through on
the mud roads in the rainy season.
A local woman made their evening
meal which always consisted of
beans or rice or a combination of
both, and chicken or goat meat.
The men prepared breakfast. They
got up at five to work in the cool
of the day. They had few tools and
had to sift sand and mix ccmcnt by
hand. A native Haitian directed the
project, which they finished in the
week they were there, except for
the tin roof. They mct the family
who was buying the house.
Daniel worked ten hours for three
dollars a day in a baseball factory,
and had to pay two thousand dol-
lars for the house with an interest-
free loan.
Their pictures of Port-au-Prince
showed crowded streets and some
beautiful homes which were usual-
ly fenced or in a walled enclosure,
and guarded at night. Those who
took part in the project paid their
own air fare.
Jean Bennett introduced the
speakers and Anna Kcys thanked
them.
President Margaret Hayter wel-
comed the guests and Anna Keys
played organ music while the
women assembled and accompanied
the hymns. The prayei service on
the theme "Opcn Doors" was pre-
pared by women of Brazil. The
Goshen women -served a delicious
lunch following the program, then
we separated for our business meet-
ing, chaired by Joan Beicrling.
Reports of the recently catered
dinner and pancake supper were cir
.culated. A thank you note was "re-
ceived from Ruby Hill. A donation
was made to Dr. Graham's Homes
in India.
Invitations were received from
Bayfield and Kippen U.C.W.s to
their thank -offering meetings on
April 6 and 12. On May 4 and 5
there is a quilt show in St. Marys.
The big spring event is on April
18 in Listowel. Our next project is
the dessert euchre at Stanley Com-
plex on the afternoon of April 6.

Opening ceremony
February 23 I watched the open-
ing ceremonies _for the Winter
Olympics. I heard it was the biggest
Winter Olympics ever, so far in tide
history of the Olympics. There were
lots of things in the Opening Cere-
monies but I liked the dancing dino-
saurs best. I also like the snowbirds
that made the Olympic colours into
smoke, the Western French dancers
and the children who made the
sports and symbols like the dove of
peace. When`the opening was over I
was ready to watch the Olvmnie
events. • Jacob Weber
Figure skating
Brian Orscr skated twice during
the closing ceremony. It was great.
Brian Orscr got silver. He wanted
gold for Canada. Elizabeth Manley
skated twice near the closing cere-
mony. The crowd went crazy when
they saw Elizabeth Manley skate
and Brian Orser. Katarina Witt is
from East Germany. Shc won the
gold medal. Brian Boitano won the
gold medal. He was great. Debi
Thomas won bronze. She skated
well. Debi Thomas lives in U.S.A.
Brian Orser skated to Back to the
Future. Amanda Weigand
Our school carnival
I liked our school Olympics be -

holds own
cause we had. all kinds of games,
like snowshoeing, tobogganing,
tug -a -war, skiing, and even three-
legged races: The grade sevens were
our leaders. We had David Morlock
for our team. We did not have the
grade eights because they were the
ones that held the School Olym-
pics. Our team won three, lost four
and tied one. I thought we did pretty
good. I had Ben Allen from grade
one to look after just if he got lost
or something like that. Our team
was called Blue six. We won tug-of-
war all three of them. My brother
was even a leader. I don't know how
his team could have him for a lead-
er. I wouldn't: But I had a good time
during the school carnival.

Ski jumping
I like skiing but most of all ski
jumping. On January 26 my mom,
JoDee and I went to Collingwood:
It was a long drive but when we got
there we put on our skis: We went
up on the ski lift. We went down
Big Baby a few times and then a
hill called Shaky Knees: We went
ski jumping. Mom went on the big-
ski
igski jump hill and fell and hurt her
burn. JoDec and I went down the
little ski jump and we didn't fall.
Mom also tried the little one and
she was good. We all did not want

to go so we did some more. We all
fell a few times. I wanted to try it
when I saw people doing it on the
Olympics on T.V.
I like watching the Olympics and
Ski Jumping. Melissa Thiel
Closing ceremonies '
The Closing Ceremonies were fun
to watch. It had some things from
the past 16 days. There was a big
ice rink in the middle of McMahon
Stadium. The exciting part was
whcn all the athletes came out.
There was a big crowd of athletes.
They had different countries come
out together. In the middle of it
there were figure skating people.
They were from different countries.
The athletes in the crowd started
some waves. Thcrc is a part that
little kids will certainly love. Hidy
and Howdy on skates and thc Kore-
an Lion Hoduri, and the chamoix of
France. The Summer 1988 games
arc in Korea and the XVI Wintcr
Olympics are in France.
