Times-Advocate, 1988-03-02, Page 29Aims of Baden Powell outlined
at Scouts, Guides Thinking Day
Saturday, Beavers, Brownies,
Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Pathfinders
and their families gathered at the
Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church
for thein "Thinking Day" service.
Each group repeated their promise
as their flags were .presented. Rev
"Duke" .Vipperman led the service
of worship, candlclighting and mu-
sic •accompanied by Susan Kraft -
check.
Mrs. Dorothy Chapman, gucst
speaker, reminded the Guilding and
Scouting groups that Lord Baden
Powell's aim in starting the Scout-
ing Movement was to prepare boys
(and eventually girls) to survive in
their world. He hack:ompleted a ca-
reer in the anny were he had en-
countered soldiers who had to be
taught to survive on their own.
Baden Powell was asked to devel-
op a program whereby youth could
learn these survival skills. Today, '
youth do no learn how to "Skin
rabbits" as their previous scouts
did. However, they arc gaining self-
reliance, organization and survival
skills by learning first aid skills,
CPR, how town councils work,
conservation awareness and camp-
ing skills.
Even gamcs teach co-operation,
and how to follow directions. Hu-
mour plays an important part in the
Guiding -Scouting movement in
learning to live with their mistakes
(such as campfire cooking failures),
and thrift is an important value, in
our own possessions and those of
others as well as those of Mothcr
Nature.
Mrs. Chapman added that win-
ning is not the 'most important re-
ward. She reminded us of "Eddie the
Eagle", the English Olympic ski -
jumper who was an example of
gaining so much from just "being
involved"! This also applies to the
Guiding -Scouting movement.
Members win from their involve-
ment, not from the amount of badg-
es on their uniform. If they do win
thats an extra benefit.
Also, Mrs: Chapman told the
groups of the importance of their
uniforms because people recognize
their uniforms as being worts by a
"caring, helpful person . She added
that in the future when these young
people are filling out job applica=
tions, be sure to include that you
were once in the Scouting -Guiding
movement. "ft says so much about
you."
Mrs. Chapman truly impressed
upon the listeners the importance of
the aims of the Guiding -Scouting
movement and re -enforced the lea:;-
ers blrliefs that it is important to
attcmpt to develop these skills in
our young people.
