Granton 4-H club meets, elects slate of officers By MRS. E. SUMMERS The first meeting of the Granton 411 Club was held on Thursday, February 18 at the home of leader Deanne Bcatson. After opening with the pledge the election of offi- cers were as follows: president - Lisa Mardlin; vice-president - Col- leen Rollings; secretary - Sylvia Bcatson; press reporter - rotating. The aim of this project, entitled "Scwin Plus" ie to construct shirt with_ a collar and interfacing using a cotton or cotton blend fab- ric. Types of fabrics, interfacing and notions were discussed. members also reviewed reading a pattern envelope. This week the members will purchase all equip- ment rcquircd for nicking the shirt. The next meeting will be held on February 25 at Deanna Beatson's. Thanks is expressed to Deanna and Lisa Maudlin. Follow- ing the pledge, members showed the pattern and fabric which they 4iad purchased. We then read about the properties of cotton in our manuals. Colleen Rollings led an exercise which taught the members the cor- rect way to make a pattern altera- tion. Finally we started pinning' and cutting our patterns and fab- rics. This week at home members will finish the cutting and marking of their shirt pieces. We closed the meeting with the 411 motto "Learn to do by doing". Our next mccting will be held on Thursday, March 3 at the home of Dcanna Bcatson. We wish to thank Deanna and youth leader Colleen Rollings. Mervin Hayter won the prize for the man's high and Reta Baird re- ceived the prize for High lady. Low lady's prize went to Gladys Alexan- der and low man's prize was won by Tom Murray. • Door prizes went to Gladys Alex- ander, Reta Baird, Anna Wilson and Jean McQwen. The Annual Family Fun Night for Stanley Township was held Sat- urday February 27 from 8-11 p.m. with a good attendance. Everyone brought their families and enjoyed the music and dancing. The children really enjoyed themselves by danc- ing with their parents or with their friends. Minnie and Mickey Mouse were also there to entertain the chil- dren. There were several spot dances for the children and the winners were: Jill Carnachan and Kelly Ratcliffe, Krista Mustard, and Krista Flem- ing, Janet Theil and Dana Theil, Ilcathcr Bcierling and Danny Rath - well, Robert Stephenson and Darcy Rathwcll, Mary and Sandra Coultis, Nlichael Thiel and Trish McAsh. There were two adult spot dances and the winners were Arnold and Jean Taylor and Kcn and Donna Thiel. There were also two prizes for a girl's and boy's birthday closest to the date of the dance and they were Kcrri Barraclough and Brad Mount. Happy Birthday. The adult door prizes went to Dale and Karen Ratcliffe and Don and Lorraine Taylor. Lunch was served following the dance and everyone enjoyed them- selves. Rural Reflections - Portraits of a Century, is a photo competition creatcii to salute rural life. The con- test is being held in co-operation with Minolta Canada Ltd. Photos may be entered in four main categories: crops and/or live- stock, agricultural landscape, rural life (people) and the Ontario Agri- cultural Museum site. To mark the Ministry of Agricul- ture and Food's Centennial celebra- tions, the contest will feature a spe- cial historical category for photographs of rural life in Ontario prior Jo 1945. 1. Amateur and professional photog- raphers are eligible. Black and white and color photos may be entered for each category. Minolta will provide 11 prizes of photo equipment for the competi- tion. The top prize winner for Best of Show, will receive a Minolta Maxxum 7000 35mm SLR camera. All the photos in the competition will become part of the museum's feature exhibit, also named Rural Reflections, to run from June 27 to September 5, 1988. The competi- tion photos will be supplemented by the work of R.R. Sallows, an acclaimed early 20th century pho- tographer best known for his pho- tos of rural Ontario. The deadline for entries into the competition is June 8. The first 200 entrants in the contest will re- ceive a free roll of Ilford film, pro- vided by Ilford Photo Canada Ltd.
