That was the story for Exeter all afternoon Thursday when thay lost an 8-2 decision to Madill and were eliminated from the playoffs. Wellesley left gasping as Hawks head for Mitchell Exeter Hawks gave Wellesley something to remember them by Friday night when the teams met. for the last time in their regular schedule. Despite being hampered. by a short roster, 1 -hawks delivered a 9-3 loss to Applejacks on foreign ice. - The Western Junior D squad will now turn their attention te, Mitchell : Hawks, who they face in the North septi -final.- Hawks coach h .Dave- Bogart prom- ised the team (Ley could select their -first round opponents, should they finish -in first place in their clivi- - -cion, The team selected Mitchell. "They want to get a shot at Brus- - scis in the league final," said Bo-- gart of the f hawks. "They :want _to . wait until then when it means a little more." The best -of -seven series against Mitchell begins Friday night at the South Huron 'Rcc Centre. Exctcr has a season record of five wins acid one loss against -Mitchell -- a record which givesBogart confidence go- ing into the_ series. "I don't think, with our full iine- up, that they can keep up with us," he said. "We're a lot bigger than they arc and they can't hit with us. That's our bread and butter. We're more aggressive. We usually end up on the large end -of thc stick with them." Down on his team during a recent string of losses, Bogart is buoyed by the five game winning streak on which Hawks have finished the sea- son.. guess I was spoiled," Bogart orts said of the nearly perfect start Hawks had this season. "I didn't ex- pect us to go into an eight game Idsingstreak, but we seem to have come out of it alright." Exctcr may -be able to use Friday night's game against Wellesley as a spring board for the playoffs. Hawks took a 5-2 Icad in the first period with most of their goals re- sulting from power plays, but found 'themselves only 11 skaters strong by the second due to game misconducts against Tcrry Casey and Tom McCann. Despite the imbalance on the bench, they continued to outscore Wellesley in thc second and third periods, dissipating several five -on - three situations caused by penalties. Derrick Martin was instrumental in Hawks victory, making 39 saves over three full periods. Scott Lovic netted a pair of goals early in the first while Wellesley was short-handed, starting himself off on what would be a five point night. Steve Gould and Clarke Singer also added singles while Hawks had a titan advantage. Jeff Anscms closed out the period scoring with a goal from Lovic and Ted Hodgins at 14:49. Gould cushioned Exeter's lead even more with a short-handed goal at 11:20 of the second and then -Scott Bogart connected. with Scan Whiteford to score Hawks' seventh ,goal of the game. Whiteford notched three -assists in the game. In the third, Exctcr received goals from Singer and Jim Lewis just 36 seconds apart. All three Wellesley goals wcrc scored by Brian Lewis. Panthers strong South Huron Panthers hockey team may have finished their season on a love note when they lost 8-2 to Wingham Thursday afternoon, but that. game may 6e the beginning of a . bright future for high school hockey in Exeter. - Panthers lost the -two game -total -- points series without ever having . threatened F. E. Madill, but the stands were crowded with students and.the first year hockey venture gave every sign of health. "1 think the interest is there," said coach • Brian O'Connell. "I just think we're going to have to work • on giving them a better product." Panthers finished the season with a record of three wins, seven losses and one tie:.Thcy were eliminated from the playoffs after losing 6-2 and 8-2 to Madill. - Thursday, Madill took a 2-0 lead in the first and increased it to 4-0 in the second. Four more goals in the third sunk Exeter, but in the final minute of play, Shawn Moore and Jerry Lamport managed to score, preventing a shut -out. "We started to come on in the second period," O'Connell said of the game. "If we get a goal, any- thing can happen, but we couldn't buy a goal in the second period." Asked if the novelty of high school hockey had anything to do with their poor record this season, O'Connell refused thc crutch. - "I don't want to use that as an ex- cuse," he explained. "Ptfon't want to be labelled as a first year team. We need that consistency throughout. O'Connell noted that a lack of quality ice -time for practices harp= for next season percd the team throughout the sea- son (the boys were forced to prac- tice at 6:30 a.m.), but he is quick- to point out that Minor Hockey takes precedent over high school hockey. . "The idea was --net to hurt minor -:-hockey—and-hope:ell} -t c iaclres- ---- have found that it (h igh school hockey) was a benefit to -the boys," the Panthers coach said. "Any time you can get on the ice, it's a bene- fit." O'Connell doesn't anticipate a player rivalry between Junior hock- ey and the high school brand in Ex- eter. He points -to the 80 students who attended the tryouts for Pan- thers last fall. In fact, rather than drawing kids away froni Junior hockey, he hopes . to prepare them for it. . ."In this arca there are enough quality players that they can sup- port the two trams. If l'have sonic kids who want to -play Junior,•tha1- fine," he said. - Comparing 'the two brawls of hockey, O'Connell said that fight- • ing is frowned upon in high school and resisting a fight takes disci- plinc. "1 refuse to allow lighting and 1 -think the guys find it more disci- plined. It's the building of -that dis- . ciplinc which will help (in Junior hockey)." - - As for next year, O'Connell is looking for a team with more firc- powcr. - - "I want to he Competitive to the point where we do have a somewhat closer final than we did this year:" WINNING EFFORT -- Madill captain Steve Thynne accepts a new trophy donated by District 45 of the OSSTF. Representing the OSSTF is Clay Murray while Panther captain Jim Dickins acts as a representative for his team. Harriston provides more than Mohawks expect in .After riding the emotional high that guided them through the final two games of their Hardy Cup ser- ies against Mooretown,'Exeter Mo- hawks fcund it difficult to get down to business against Harriston Blues in the second series -of Central Sen- ior B playoff action. Having little trouble with Harris - ton over the course of the season, Mohawks expected little trouble in post season play, and after game one in which they defeated Blues 7- 2, their expectations seemed justi- fied. But Sunday afternoon in Harris - ton, Blues opened the eyes of a short-staffed Mohawk squad with a 6-4 win which tied the semi-final series 1-1. . "The intensity with which we played against Moorctown was not evident and rightly so," said head coach Jim Guenther, refcring to Harriston's unimpressive regular season record against Mohawks. "The guys just didn't get them- selves motivated for the 7-2 win or the 6-4 loss. But now that Harris - ton has won a game, i think the BAILING.OUT -- Randy Bailey makes Harriston goalie Kevin Newbigging earn his keep during Mohawks second .meeting with the Blues Sunday afternoon. Exeter game away with the blues, losing 6-4. guys will be prepared for it (game three) and it'll likely show on the scoreboard." With Jeff Shipley, Mark Sochncr, Mike and Sid Kemp all on the temporary injured list, and other players absent due to work and so- cial commitments, Mohawks wcrc forced to play with a lean bench. Guenther expects most of the in- jured players to be back in the line- up next week. With the help of two new addi- tions from Wilfrid Laurier -- John O'Connor and Scott McCullough -- Harriston camc on strong Sunday in the first period and managed to build up a 4-0 lead going into the second. McCullough, Mark Harding, Bill Bcrfclz and Kerry Barber wcrc the I farriston goal scorers. Mohawks shook off their lethar- gy in the second and replied with four of their own, but they didn't have the legs to carry the momen- tum into the third. Wilkcr added a second goal from Dave Randerson and Jeff Warrens at 3:54 and then Randerson scored from Randy Bailey to make it 5-3. Dale Gibbon capitalized on a power play at 18:40 to make it 5-4.
