Mohawks fall to Mooretown on home turf
The South Huron Rec Centre was
a cold place to be Friday night; cold
for the fans and cold for Exeter Mo-
hawks who suffered their first real
defeat of the season at the hands of
the hard-hitting, fast -skating Moore -
town Comets.
Comets pounded their way to a 5-
2 win over Exeter in game two of
the Hardy Cup final, tying the ser-
ies at one game each and regaining
the home ice advantage.
Mohawks were shut out through
two full periods of hockey Friday
night -- something unheard of over
the course of the season. Coming
out flat in the first period, Exeter
soon found themselves playing
catch-up hockey. Trailing 2-0 at the
end of the second, Mohawks al-
lowed Comets to build a 4-0 lead in
the third before retaliating.
"We were just waiting for Mo-
hawks' usual explosion and it just
didn't happen," said Exeter coach
Jim Guenther, noting that Moore -
town's aggressive play doused the
Mohawk fire.
"We were just half a stride behind
and didn't pick it up all night," he
added
"1 think they (Mooretown) have
to have full credit for their victory."
Guenther said that Mohawks well -
seasoned line-up will turn the loss
into a learning experience rather
than let it affect their confidence.
"We just can't sit back and wait
for the explosion," he said. "We
have to make it happen."
Guenther noted that the heavy
coverage given to Quincy Wilker,
Paul Barton and Dave Randerson
carried over from game one in
Mooretown.
"They certainly keyed on the Ran-
derson-Barton-Wilker line. That's
the line they keyed on down there
and they'd certainly be silly not,to."
Asked if he was considering any
changes in the team's approach to

Four goal period sweeps Irish to tie
A goal by Joe Febrey with just
21 seconds left to play in the game
capped off an amazing four goal per-
iod and gave Lucan Irish a tie
against Lambeth Sunday.
Trailing 3-0 going into the third,
Irish made an incredible come -back
on the strength of two goals by
Scott Denomy and two by Febrey.
A 4-2 win against Mount Brydges
Wednesday night added to the tie to
give Lucan a three point week
which will provide a boost heading
into the last four regular season
games in the Western Junior D
league.
Irish fell behind 1-0 in the first
period Sunday and then failed to an-
swer two second period Lambeth
markers..
Senior B
playoff
schedule set
Exeter Mohawks have chosen
Palmerston 81's to be their op-
position in the first, round of
Central Senior B playoffs.
The two teams will square off
in a best -of -five quarter -final ser-
ies which begins in Exeter Feb-
ruary 12 at 8:30 p.m.
The teams will travel to Pal-
merston for game two Sunday af-
ternoon, February 14 and then
game three will bring them back
to the South Huron Rec Centre
February 18 where the puck will
be dropped at 8:30 p.m.
• If necessary, the series will re-
turn to Palmerston ice February
20 for a 5 p.m. game and the fi-
nal'game will take place Febru-
ary 21 in Exeter at 7:30.
Palmerston finished in last
place in the Central Senior B
league with a record of three
wins, 19 losses and two ties.
Using the same best -of -three
format, second place Durham
Huskies will face sixth place Ta-
vistock Royals while Harriston
Blues, who finished the season
in third spot, will take on Hills -
burgh.
Because of the odd number of
teams in the league, EIora Rocks
received a hyc into the second
round.
The three quarter -final winners
will meet, along with Elora, in
best -of -five series. The team
with the most points in regular
season play will be allowed to
pick their opponents.
The winners from the semi-
final round will meet in a best -
of -seven final to decide the
league champion before March
24.
The Lucan blitz began just three
minutes into the final period when
Denomy scored from Paul Barnes
and Febrcy during a power play.
A Lambeth goal by Dwayne Ap-
thorp countered that at 9:48 but De-
nomy put the gears in motion with
a second power play goal from Brad
Muir and Barnes.
Only 1:20 showed on the clock
when Febrey sunk his first goal of
the game from Paul DePlanck and
Barnes, setting the stage for the fi-
nal game -tying marker.
Irish took a 2-1 lead in the first
period Wednesday night, spurred on
by a pair of goals by Tim Hayter.
Hayter's first goal came at 14:14 af-
ter he connected with Muir and Gra-
ham Hutton during a power play.
Mount Brydges' Lorne West took
advantage of a power play to tie the
tame at the ten minute mark of the
rest.
Hayter found the mark again 30
seconds later when Jamie Greig and
Febrey set him up for the play.
Mount Brydges tied the game in
the second when Mike Lees beat
goalie Paul Farrell. Lucan made no
reply.
In the third, Muir potted the go-
ahead goal with 7:55 remaining, af-
ter picking up a pass from Brian
Shuyler and then Hutton finished
the game with an empty net goal at
19:59.
Irish face Thamesford, Thedford,
Belmont and Lambeth in their final
four games of the season.
game three in the series, Guenther
said he plans to suck with Mo-
hawks current formula.
"I may change lines around a bit,
depending on the situation, but no.
We've gone through 26 league
Sports
games. You don't fix something
until it's broken," Guenther said.
Mooretown started the scoring at
11:28 when Mike McGugan put the
.puck in the net unassisted with.a
shot from the faceoff in the Exeter
zone.
Nelson Turnbull added to Comets
lead at 1:31 of the second.
By the halfway mark of the third,
goals by Joe Panik and Al Prey
gave Mooretown a 4-0 advantage.
At 14:33, Ron Elliott tipped in a
blueline shot from Randy Bailey to
give Exeter their first goal of the
night. John Kernick assisted on the
play.
A goal by Moorctown's Jim Har-
ris at 15:27 put all hope of a tie out
of the minds of Exeter fans.
Randy Kraul notched Mohawks
only other goal from Wilker and
Randerson at 17:59.
While Mohawks were unable to
use their three optional players
from the Central Senior B league
due to prior corm iunents and regu-
lar schedule games, Cornets made
use of two extras. Prey and Jay Bro-
die, both wingers, figured promi-
nently in Friday's scoring for
Mooretown. Coach Ron Wilson
had been hesitant about using out-
side players, but felt something ex-
tra was needed after Mohawks deliv-
ered a 7-4 loss in Mooretown in the
first game of the series.
The players contributed two
points with one goal and one assist
in Friday's game.
COMETIZED -- Exeter Mohawks ran into this sort of thing quite a bit in
the corners Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre when they dropped
,game two to Mooretown Comets 5-2. Bill Glover centre and John Rowland

St. Marys added to their lead with
a goal in each period with markers
going to Kevin Shaughaessy, Jeff

Despite one of their finest perfor-
mances of the season, Waxers al-
lowed a 1-0 lead slip away in the
third period Saturday in Petrolia.
After playing through a scoreless
first period against a rather physical
Petrolia team, Exeter took the lead
in the second with an unassisted

tie against St. Marys.

NOT -SO -FRIENDLY ADVICE -- Exeter Mohawk Jeff Warren has a short "discussion" with Mooretown Comet
Joe Panik during game two of the Hardy Cup series between the two teams. Mooretown was aggressive enough to
pull a 5-2 win out of Exeter Friday night, tying the series at one game each.
Hawks share first place with Wellesley
A 6-4 win over Thedford
Tuesday night has maintained
Exeter Hawks in first spot in
the North Division of the West-
ern Junior D league, but they
arc no longer alone.
As it stands now Wellesley
Applejacks and Hawks are
locked in a tic for first place.
Exeter has just two regular sea-
son game left on their schedule.
Their last game is against Well-
esley and all signs point to a
spectacular finish to a season
which was largely dominated by
Hawks.
A three day trip to Ohio on
the weekend might have given
Exctcr the change they need to
finish the season on the win-
ning note that they began with
in the Fall -- a winning note
which seems to have more or
less alluded them in 1988.
(Hawks played two exhibition
games against Ohio University.
A full report on the trip will
follow in next week's issue of
the Tirnes=Advo ate).
Tuesday night in Thedford,
Hawks maintained a 2-0 lead as
they entered the second period,
but were out -scorn! 3-1 in that
frame after missing a penalty
shot. Faced with a 3-3 tic as
they entered the third, Exeter re-
covered to score three goals,
two of them unanswered by
Thedford.
Jcff Anscms opened the scor-
ing with a goal at 2:00. Clarke
Singer drew the lone assist.
Singer then scored an unas-
sisted marker of his own at
5:57.
Thedford goals by Steve Mof-
fat and Scott Lave made things
close for Exctcr.
• Tcrry Casey put the puck in
the net with 5:46 remaining, in
the second, but 'Ilrcdford's- Mof-
fat tied the game during a power
play before the period ended.
Less than one minute into the
third, Jim- Lewis changed the
tone of the game with a goal
from Bryan Quinn and Brent
Nairn.
Quinn scored from Scott Lo -
vie during a power play near the
halfway mark of the period but
that goal was matched by Thcd-
foni.
Jeff Reid put the puck in the
net with 7:35 to play, giving
Exeter sonic breathing space.
George Pratt picked up the as-
sist on the play.
Derrick Martin was in goal
