Times-Advocate, 1988-02-03, Page 17Video helps cut suspension
Exeter Hawk Steve Gould got a
big break Monday night when the
team executive appealed a decision
handed down by the OHA suspend-
ing the Hawks captain for the re-
mainder of the season.
A delegation from the Western
Junior D club showed the board a
video tape of the incident which
proved that the stick -work was not
as severe as officials had originally
indicated.
Last week the OHA board ruled
that Gould would be forced to sit
out for the remainder of the season
and that he would be on probation
during post season play both this
Steve Gould
season and next as a result of an in-
cident December 27.
During a garlic against Brussclls
Bulls, Gould became involved in a
stick swinging incident with goal -
tender Jeff McGavin. The Hawk
captain was given a match penalty
and was called up before the OHA
board for revue.
Referee Gary Gravitt testified that
Gould swung his stick with the in-
tent to injure.
That testimony was apparently
overturned by the video tape of the
game. The board ruled Monday
night that Gould will serve a ten
regular season game suspension and
will be on probation during the
playoffs. Because he has already
served eight of the ten games,
Gould will see ice time in three
games before playoffs begin.
Hawks have been taping their
games throughout the season in or-
der to study their performance.
Bogart back
Dave Bogart, coach of the Hawks,
ran into some stormy weather this
week as well. Bogart was informed
last week that he too, was expected
to appear before the OHA board for
a hearing. The OHA maintained that
Bogart had been suspended three
times this season.
In truth, the Hawks coach has had
just two suspensions this season. A
clerical error moved a suspension
from the previous season up into
the 1987-88 season.
Bogart decided to take a chance
Saturday when Hawks met Welles-
ley. Though he had been notified of
the third suspension, he took up his
position behind the bench. His ac-
tions however, had no effect on the
board's decision as it was a mistake
on their behalf.

Mohawks impress Mooretown
Mooretown Comets coach Ron

tario Hardy Cup series and gave a
heavy sigh Tuesday night.
His team had just been through

"They can skate, they can shoot
and they're big," Wilson lamented.
"I'll tell you, there's not too many
coaches that wouldn't want to stand
behind that bench."
"They've got the best hockey club
I've seen so far (in the Senior B
league)."
He was, of course, referring to the
Exeter Mohawks, who just handed
Comets a 7-4 loss.
Comets concentrated efforts to.
shut down Mohawks most success-
ful line failed. Davc Randcrson,
Quincy Wilker and Paul Barton ac-
counted for four of Exeter's seven
goals, despite the attention they re-
ceived from Moorctown.
"We know that that's one of their
best lines, if not the best line, but I
"Our team is brainless."
That was the reaction of Exeter
Hawks head coach Dave Bogart after
his team blew a 5-2 lead in the third
period and was forced to settle for a
7-7 tie against Brussels Friday night
at the $outh Huron Rec Centre.
"The players have no discipline,"
Bogart continued. "They think that
because they have an Exeter Hawk
uniform on that they have to win.
We'll be lucky to make it through
the first round of the playoffs."
Hawks "self destructed" in the
third period after goalie Davc Rook
was ejected from the game for talk-
,ing back to the referee and Scott Lo -
vie was given a game misconduct
for fighting.
"Some of our so-called veterans
arc very selfish," Bogart said after
the game. "We're really lacking
character on this -team."
"We had too many easy games in.
the fall and the guys have got a
false sense of security. We haven't
won a third period in 1988."
Hawks added a tie and a loss io
their ailing record over the weekend.
Clarke Singer picked up two
goals in Friday night's debacle
while single went to George Pratt,
Terry Casey, Jcff Pfaff and Jeff An-
sems who scored Exeter's seventh
Sports
goal with a high shot as he crossed
the blucline in the final minutes of
•the game.
. Ansems goal was all that saved
them from the loss.
"You might as well consider that.
a loss," said an irritated Bogart.
"They scored four goals on us in the
third period. We scored one -- for all
intents and purposes that's a Toss."
Things got worse as the weekend
progressed. After claiming a 2-1
laid in the first period against Well-
esley Saturday, Hawks fell behind
5-4 in the second and were unable to
recover in the third:
Singer turned in a four point
night with two goals and two as-
sists while single goals went to
Dean Schram, Terry Casey and An-
sems. .
- Hawks made it look good in the
opening- minutes 9f the first.
Schram connected with Mark Mor-
rissey and Singer to score at 2:10.
That goal stood until 18:44 when
Singer added to it on a pass from
Casey. Both goals were scored dur-
ing power plays.
Hawks went up 3-1 at 1:07 of the
second when Singer scored his sec-
ond goal of the night from Morris-
sey and Scott Bogart, but then the
dam burst at Exeter's end of the ice.
Goalie Derrick Martin soon came
out and was replaced by new -comer
Marty Mcrncr who 'vas linable to
stem the flow. •

lie Scott McCann in the second,

Paul Barton sparked the explosion
at 2:31 when he connected with Jeff
