Monks rally in Washington
The Franciscan monastery on
Highway 4 south of Exeter was
cmpty *for a few days last week.
All 10 residents and a visitor were
in Washington D.C. to take part in
the annual March For Life.
The pro-life rally has been held
in Washington annually for the
past 15 years to commemorate the
date -and time - 12 noon on January
22, 1973 - when the US Supreme
Court allowed the Liberalization of
_ abortionlaws which hitherto had
been restricted to saving the life of
the mother.
The local Franciscan group,
composed of Father David Przed-
wiecki. four novices and five candi-
dates, stopped first in suburban
Washington to say Mass at the
Shrine of the immaculate Concep-
tion before being bussed into the
heart of the city for the tally.
The Canadian group carried two
large signs, and displayed both the
Stars and Stripes and the Maple
Leaf flag.
"We are out of the political pic-
ture, but this is a matter of moral
necessity", Father David ex-
plained. "No one ever shouts
'murderer' at a poor woman who
gets an abortion. Many are not ful-
ly informed about what abortion
really consists of. At the rally we
prayed the Rosary for all those
mothers, and some non-Catholics
joined in for the 'Our Father"'.
The rally, organized by Nellie
Gray, president of the International
Coalition for Life, drew a huge
crowd to the Ellipse, the wide ex -
panne stretching from the Washing-
ton Monument to the Lincoln Me-
morial. The purpose is to apply
moral pressure in a legal and peace-
ful way to have the 1973 decision
overturned, and to have the Ameri-
can Constitution amended to add the
words "for the born and the unborn"
after "the pursuit of happiness".
Father David reported the news-
papers estimated the numbers at this
year's rally at 50,000, but the police
figure was double that. :He added
that the Canadian flag drew a great
deal of attention.
The friars have temporarily rolled
up their banners. They will be un-
furled when the local Franciscans at-
tend the March for Life scheduled
for this spring in Toronto.
ATTEND RALLY - The members of the local Franciscan monastery travelled to Washington DC last week to
take part in the annual March for Lite. Shown (from left) are Bro. Joseph Marie Campbell, Candidate Dennis Rosprt,
Father David Przedweicki, Bro. Peter Warkulwiz, Candidate Ernest Paquette, Bro. Jean Poupard, Bro. Stephen
Giles Kwasek, and Candidate Fernando Hernandez. Sandissa the cat stayed home.

two weeks in Pcurto Vallarta, Mex-
ico, Shelley Hayter and Janet
Mdfcath spent the first week with
them.
As well as enjoying the beautiful
weather, they went on a Tropical
Tour which showed them the city
and country side around Peurto Va-
larta. On horseback along the river
and into the mountain they saw the
women washing their clothing,
dishes and themselves in the river,
which didn't look very clean. After
being assured there were no sharks
in the water, Allan and Joyce took
turns para -sailing over the bay for a
beautiful view from the air and a
safe landing on the beach.
The peso was $ 16.50 for one Ca-
nadian dollar, but the prices of food,
etc. were much the same as in Can-
ada.
The ice is still in the shed in Var-
na and will be as long as it stays
cold. Charles Reid continues to
flood and look after it. Public skat-
ing hours are Tuesday, Thursday
and Saturday evenings from 7 -
8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday af-

in the area may skate there at their
own risk. So come on out and en-
joy while you can.

Hugh and. I accompanied our
cousin, Donald Jackson of Hensall
area, last Saturday, to visit our
cousins, Mrs. Beverley Ford and her
son John, at their tog house cabin
in the country near Grand Valley,
and were noon dinner guests with
them and John's friend Ann. This
dinner was a triple celebration, a de-
layed Christmas, Donald's birthday
and the Morenz's upcoming .wed-
ding anniversary.
John works part time as a magi-
cian entertaining at birthday parties
and Senior citizen groups. He
amused us after dinner with several
card tricks, and the vanishing $20
bill act. John has a menagerie of
doves and rabbits he raises and uses,
and which we also enjoyed seeing.
"Happy birthday" wishes to Ar-
nold Keller, who will be 81 years
on January 30
Pat and Jake Schroeder, daughter
