The ice machine cometh
You may have noticed the little
hin ! on, th
front page of this week's issue.
Blow on it and sec what hap-
pens.
I know -- nothing. It was just
a joke. -
If you really. want something
to happen to the little gizmo, go
to the South Huron Rec Centre
and give Rcc -Director -Lynne
Farquhar some money.
She has sct up a bank account
with the Town of Exeter to keep
all the money that has been do-
nated to the Winter Sports
Council so that they in turn can
provide arca skaters with a brand
ncw ice resurfacer -- price tag,.
- $36,300.
Sounds like a good deal.
For the money you get a new
icc resurfacer and you get to
watch the little gauge go up.
Before Christmas it looked as
though the project might fade
out of sight because of aJanuary
deadline placed on the fund-
raiser. That deadline was im-
posed because the price .of the-
equipment in -question went up
substantially as of the first week
in January.
But the ice machine- carnpaign
was pulled out of the fire before
it melted • with a little old.-
fashioned
ld-fashioned wheeling and dealing.
"We ordered it and went ahead
with it,". explains Farquhar. "We
talked to the guy ( the salesman)
and he said there would be no
obligation by February 22 if •we
couldn't come up with the mon-

$18,000 before the Exeter -Le-
gion kicked in $10,000. That
major contribution has .pushed
the icc machine project very
close- to completion.
There is now $28,100 in the
coffers. But there is still $8,200

The rec Centre staff has issued
a challenge. They pulled together
$100 and donated it to the cause
and they challenge any business-
es or private -citizens to match
the sum.
Farquhar notes that tax receipts
can be obtained at the Town Hall
for any donation of $100 or
more.
For those of you who scoff at
the -idea of a shinty new ice ma-
chine, here are a .few details to
chew on.
The old machine (which is in
rough shape anyway) can't hold
much snow. The ncw machine
has a larger buckct and can there-
fore shave off more ice.
That in turn creates thinner icc
and thinner ice means lower ener-
gy and labour bills. At present,
at least one Rec Centre employee
spends the better part of two days
each week shaving the icc. That
extra labour would be eliminated
by the new ice machine.
Also, with thinner ice, the are-
na compressor doesn't have to
work as hard. Thc ice is of a bet-
ter quality and it doesn't cost as
much to maintain.
Here's onc'more factor for the
good guys: hot water bills would
be decreased because the snow
could -be dumped outside the are-
na instead of being washed down
the drain • inside _(tractor wheels
pick up too much mud in the
. winter when the tractor is driven
outside).
I. saved the best part for the
end
Thc new icc machine runs on -
propane which means -- let the
bells ring out -- no more diesel
fumes. -

ran into an opponent more formid-
able than they had anticipated last
Wednesday. Not even the fiercest
team in the league would have
daunted the Novices as much as
meeting their own mothers on the
ice.

a girls' travelling team," said coach
Bill Weiss as his team was warm-
ing up on _the ice, conf-iderit that
they would win this one.

the game with a score of 7-6.
South Huron basketball
By Sheila Dougall
Tuesday, South Huron basketball
teams travelled to Scaforth in their
final league games before exams.
The Midget Panthers were more
than the Seaforth Midgets could
handle as the local boys handed Sea -
forth a 67-24 defeat. The Panther of-
- fcnse was especially sharp and the
team -was very effective at setting
up plays and turning them into
points.
High scorers of. the game were
Steve DuBarry andPeteMcAllister
with 10 each. Brett Borden, Davc
Schwindt and Jeremy Hrudka had
eight points each.
Defensively, Mark Russell was

night when they pummeled Mitch-

claim the shut -out for Exeter. -
Dave Rook - shut -out
The win cornes on the heels of a
dramatic 8-7 loss to Mitchell .last
week in which Exeter blew a 6-2
lead in the third period.
"A little revenge factor there," Bo-
gart said. "The guys were more than
ready for that one." . .
Clarke -Singer and Scott Lovie
turned 'in a five point night with
two goals and three assists each.
Singer and Lovie put the puck in
the net in the first period to give
Exeter a 2-0 lead.
Second period goals came from
Jim Lewis, Tcd Hodgins, George
Pratt and Singer: In the third, Lovie potted his sec-
ond and Brent Nairn added a -single.
Nairn also collected three assists
over the course of the game. -
Rook fended off 18 shots to se-
cure the shut -out.
Rook had less luck Saturday
night when Wellesley romped over
Exeter 7-3. Replaced by Derek Mar-
tin early in the second, Rook al-
lowed three goals -in th'e first and
one in the second.
Hawks stood fast in the first, re-
ceiving goals from Jeff Pfaff and
Jeff Ansems with assists going to
Terry Casey, Mark Morrissey and
Dean Schram.
Leading 3.2 at the end of the first,
Wellesley addcd two goals in the
second as opposed to Exeter's sin-
gle.
Morrissey scored Exeter's' only
marker in.the second. Casey and
Schram again drew the assists.

Distinguished by its high stan-
dards, the CSPS requires its mem-
bers to be re -certified every ycar
with a 100 question written tcst and
a practical examination of a poten-
tial victim.
Fraync became a part of the or-
ganization after doing a stint with a
private ski patrol when he lived in
Bracebridge. He has spent the past
11 years as a member of the ski pa-
trol at Horseshoe Valley ski resort.
The Toronto Starrecently said of
the CSPS: "When the Canadian Ski
Patrol System agreed to provide a
specialized team to handle on-site
first aid for skiing, bobsled and luge
events at this February's Olympic
Gamcs, the Calgary Olympic Orga-
nizing Committee probably didn't
realize the talent it was getting."

business
"Oh no, they're women," whis-
pered the players to each other as
the "visiting" team circled the far
end of the ice.
The Novices were still unaware
of who they were up against even
as the puck dropped, but the secret
was soon out when the first shift
returned to the bench.
"My mom's out there," said
more than one player to the coach
who couldn't hold back his laugh-
ter any longer.
However, it soon became evident
rious -challenge to their playing
ability from the mothers and sis-
ters on the ice.
The ladies played an almost en-
tirely defensive game and had to re-
sort to bending the rules just to
hold hack the tide of shots on their
goal. One Novice found his break-
away down the ice with the puck
ruined when he was grabbed by the
uniform and lifted off his feet,
leaving the puck free for an incom-
ing "visitor".
The scoreboard at the end of the
game showed a 7-6 win for the
Moms, but sources say the referee
was bribed.
Just to prove that Ron Hextall is
not the only goalie who can score
goals, Elaine. Groot skated the full
length of the icc to put the puck
past her own son.
