good year. I think we got our feet
on the ground last year," Whiteford
told the group. "We have a handle
on what we have to do better than
we did last year."
The new chairman said Friday that
her primary focus for the year will
be on the Rec building itself, which
is in need of extensive repairs.
"The building has to come first,"
she said, adding that a plan of action
is needed immediately, whether the
building is repaired in stages or all
at once. "It has to betaken care of."
Usborne representative Tom
Tomes was elected vice-chairman.
New faces
Representing Exeter Town coun-
cil- for this term is Reeve Bill
Mickle. Mayor Bruce Shaw will
also take a more active role on the
Rec Board this year. As Mayor, he
is automatically considered to be a
member of the body.
Both men have served on the
board in past years.
Asked if he was there to resolve
specific issues, Shaw said -he want-
ed to look at a few items but de-
clined to elaborate.
"There have been so many prob-
lems that council has had to face
over the last few years," Shaw said.
"I want to get in there and see
what the nature of the conflict is
and rectify it beepre it becomes
public."
Whiteford also pointed to a prob-
lem in communication between the
board and council. She welcomed
the opportunity to work closely
with Shaw and Mickle.
Responding to the suggestion
that the two have, joined the board
as trouble-shooters, Whiteford ex-
pressed no concerns.
"I feel very positive about both
of them being there," she said. "I
don't feel like they're there, looking
over my shoulder."
