Caffeine addiction
by: Lynn Garrison
Nutrition Consultant
Huron County Health Unit
,From before birth to old age, al-
most all of us consume caffeine in
some form or other. The unborn
baby may absorb -it from the moth-
er's bloodstream, the breastfed in-
fant from her milk. Children and
adults consume it in the form of
coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate
and some medications.
Caffeine is readily absorbed from
the digestive tract and reaches peak
levels in the blood within 15-45
minutes. It is distributed to all
body tissues including the fetus in
pregnant women, and breast milk
in nursing mothers.
The immediate effect of caffeine
on the body include:
* increased alertness
* increased urine output
* increased physical activity
* may cause irregular heart beats,
insomnia and disruption of sleep
patterns.
Although Canadians get most of
their caffeine from coffee and tea, it
is also found in cola drinks, certain
medications such as cold remediis,
headache relievers, and cocoa prod-
ucts such as chocolate milk, hot
cocoa mix, chocolate bars and bak-
ing chocolate.
Caffeine can be addictive. Physi-
cal dependency is usually seen only
in heavy coffee drinkers who aver-
age 1,000 mg of caffeine a day, but
can develop in some adults whose
intake is .as low as 350 mg or 3-4
cups of coffee. To test if you are
getting more caffeine than you
should, remove all sources from
the diet for one day. If a throbbing
headache occurs one day later and
can only be relieved by more caf-
feine, then chances are your are
suffering from caffeine withdrawal.
Children are at particular risk of
the effects of caffeine. That is, caf-
feine's effect depends on body
weight, so a child who drinks a 10
ounce cola could experience the
same effect as an adult who drinks
four cups of coffee. Children who
ingest as much as 300 mg of caf-
feine a day - from four or five cola
drinks and'a chocolate bars - may
show signs of "caffeinism", that is
being anxious, edgy and restless.
There is no conclusive evidence
that moderate amounts of caffeine
(about 450 mg per day)4ire harmful
to the average healthy adult. This
amount pray be found in 4 cups of
coffee or strong tea. However, a
caffeine intake should be limited in

Caffeine freely crosses the placenta
to the fetus and is absorbed into
breast milk, so intake should be
eliminated in pregnant and lactating
women. Substituting fruit or vege-
table juices, milk or water for coffee
and tea is much healthier choice.
