The Hardy Cup playdowns made
some promising noises Friday
night in Tillsonburg when Exeteiv
Mohawks met a biting Maroon
squad and found themselves in a
hockey game for the first time this
season.
Mohawks were able to overcome
the more physical style of the Sen-
iorA team with their speed and the
result was a 4-3 win.
"For our fans I think it was a
pleasant sight to see us in a game
for a change," Mohawk coach Jim
Guenther said.
"We as a team, are happy to get
into a game like that just to see
what we can do. We haven't had a

dominant features of the middle per-

"My players being in a situation
where they've never been in a tough
game before, lost their composure a
bit," Guenther said of the sway in
momentum.
Tillsonburg's Jerry Cunningham
scored the only goal of the second
during a power play.
Al Gates put on a penalty killing
show midway through the second,
ragging the puck with some impres-
sive stick -work :for nearly 30 sec-
onds at one point in the game.
Dale Gibbon gave Exeter a little
breathing space at 6:02 of the third
when he scored from Ron Elliott.
Mohawks then fell back and adopted
a defensive stance, sending one man
into the Tillsonburg zone and keep-
ing two back -checkers at the red
line.
Tillsonburg was able to capitalize
on the situation with 2:10 remiin-
ing in the game when Cunningham
scored from Brian Schnieder and
Rick Polgar, making it 4-3.
In a last-ditch attempt, Maroons
pulled goalie John Calic and as-
saulted Exeter with six attackers,
but Mohawks held them off for the
win.
"This was an important game for
us since we have to come in here
for the third game if necessary,"
Guenther explained. "It's a little bit
of a blow for them to lose to a Sen-
ior B team."
Mohawks meet Tillsonburg in
Exeter Tuesday, January 19 to con-
tinue the best -of -three series. The
game begins at 8:30 p.m.
