Shelburne shoots out Mohawks, delivering first loss in Palmerston tourney
it all came down to a tic -
breaking shoot-out in Palmerston
Sunday.
Exctcr Mohawks, tircd from
playing five games in roughly 48
hours, undefeated since pre -season
play in the Fall, were out -shot 2-1
by Shelburne sharp -shooters.
The shoot-out broke the 2-2 tie
which left the A championship fi-
nal up in the air, deciding a winner
and leaving Exeter with a loss that,
though hard to take, they could ac-
cept.
Coach Jim Guenther expressed
displeasure at having to rely on a
shoot-out to decide a winner, not-
ing that the result didn't feel like a
real loss.
"They (the players) were upset at
themselves because we hadn't won,
but it was kind of a "mini loss"
because it wasn't a true way to fin-
ish a hockey game," Guenther
said.
The Mohawk coach added that, if
it is to be counted as a .loss, it
could not have come at a more op-
portune time because the game was
outside the framework of both the
Hardy Cup and Central Senior B
league play.
The tournament also gave Exeter
a look at. one of the teams they
might face in Hardy Cup play -
downs. Shelburne is currently
locked in a best -of -three series with
Mooretown Comets • while Mo-
hawks are battling Tillsonburg. The
winners of those series will meet to
decide an Ontario champion.
Guenther said the players arc
looking for something more tangi-
ble than a flawless regular season
record.
"The players are saying: '18-0-1
in our league means didtey -- we ha-
ven't won anything," Guenther ex-
plained.

and Jeff Warren were named to the
tournament All-Star team. Rander-
