HELPING OUT - Dorothy Knight (second -from. aft) got right into the spirit of the occasion when she hosted a
95th birthday party for friend and neighbour Mary, Hannigan. Other guests were (left) Hilda Taylor, Elva Routley
and (back) Chris Phillips, Mildred Fulton, Violet Murray,'Mary Funk and Mary Martin. -
The Study of Chocolate -
Room six used Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory for Language
Arts Lessons. Ronald Dahl wrote
the book. They did a character
study. Violet Bcauregarde was a
rude gum chewer. Mike Teacee was
a violent, rude_ boy who was al-
ways shooting off toy guns. Vcru-
ca Salt was spoiled and rich and,
got everything she wanted. Augus-
tus Gloop was a kind, honcst and
trustworthy boy. He also was well
behaved. The worksheets were sta-
pled into a folder.
Each student made a collage of
chocolate bar wrappers. They start-
ed to collect the wrappers right af-
ter Hallowe'en. Room six also
made a portrait of Willy Wonka.
The class painted a favourite scene
from the story.
The third An lesson was a print-
making project. They used found
objects. The objects were put into
paint and then pressed into a co-
loured piece of paper. The press-
ings formed a Willy Wonka Candy
machine.
The "Phantom" praised the work
that the class did. In fact, the Phan-
tom came twice. A lot of students
tried to buy the Willy Wonka book_
at thc book fair because it was an -
extraordinary story. Room six.

Student of the Week - Al-
most every week, we have a person
sharing their, favourite things and
hobbies. This week is Chad Pick-
, cring. He collects tractors and farm
machinery. He made a back for his
semi. It is madc from three tin
cans, tape, wood, wheels and a
bolt. We had a chance to ask him
questions to learn more about him.
- Trevor Struth.
Legends - Grade five is work-
ing on legends (myths). Thcy have
read books of legends and even had
a chance to make their own myths
and read them to other classmates.
Some of the made up legends were
exciting, some were crazy and
- some were very convincing. They
seemed to be having lots of fun as
well. - Janelle Gotten.
Pioneer Study - The grade
fives have been studying pioneers
in Social Studies learning how
they travelled and how they built
houses. They built with logs. We
know all the tools and we watched
a few movies. Do you know what
a pestle is? - Jamie Chalmers.

chance to read a book. I think it is
very educational. My partner is
Shannon Swcigcr. Partner reading is
fun - Sarah Beatty.
Treasure Island - At Stephen
Central Grade six read a book called
Treasure Island. Treasure Island was
written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
It's about a boy called Jim Hawkins
and his crcw goes through mutiny.
He deserts his crew. We enjoyed
this book very much because it was
adventurous. Tammy Durand.
New Year's Resolutions -
On New Ycar's eve we make New
Year's Resolutions. We have new
-Year's resolutions because we prom-
ise ourselves to do the things we
pmmise we will do. New Years res-
olutions arc .1 help us to be good.
Sometimes they come true. It is inn
to keep New Year's promises. -
Connie Durand, Greg Glanville,
Ethan SITU
The Olym ch - I was at
my Grandpa and Grandma's in Chat-
ham: On the last day we went and
picked up Janet Grainger. We all
went to Blenheim to see the Olym-
pic Torch. I got a plastic olympic
torch from a man that was selling
them for S2. I got a clean one. Then
I went to the front of the- crowd.
Then Glen came by with the torch.
It made me feel happy to sec thc
lighted torch. He lighted a special
flame. They had a specially made
truck that could be changed into a
stage. - Robert Elder.
The Winter Olympics at
Calgary - I'm looking forward to
the Winter Olympics at Calgary be-
cause of the many hockey games.
But if I.won a free ticket I'd try to
see alt the games I could. But I have
about a 10 percent chance of win-
ning a free ticket. I think that Team
Canada is the bcst. They won the
Gold Medal so why wouldn't they
be? But there is other games like
bobsleding. I'm not very interested
in it though. There's also skating
and skiing. The ski competition is
for the bcst skiers. Some people
like to ski=dance.'They do flips and
more things. ,If I had one wish I'd
wish that Canada would win every
game. - Judd Desjardine, Derek
S weir/cr.
Sneaky Snacks - I think
sneaky snacks are a good idea be-
cause if your Mom or Dad dor. t
have very much in the house they
can give you some money for
sneaky snacks such as cheese and
crackers, sesame snaps; drinking
boxes and granola bars. Sneaky
snack money pays for its supplies
and any profit goes to Student
Council to use for our school. -
Shannon Wucrth.
Why I want more snow - I
want more snow because I like to
build snow men and have snowball
fights with my sistcr Julie. I like to
make snow angels, make snow forts
and climb down snow hills that dad
makes with the snow blower. I also
like winter sports like skiing and
skating. Sometimes I go to the are-
na with thc class. - Jacob Weber.
Ilirds are Winter Friends -
Birds arc one of the animals that do
not hibernate. Some people put bird
feeders out so the birds do not starve
or freeze to death. One of the birds
that stay is the cardinal. The males
feathers are darker than the females.
Other birds that stay arc blucjays
and sparrows. Things they like on
the feeder arc corn, seeds, bread, fat
in mesh onion bags and peanut but-
ter seedballs. Jason Becker, David
Rammeloo.
Parent Volunteer - January 6
a parent volunteer came to room
eight. She helped my group do a
January Calendar. The Parent Vol-
unteer's name is Mrs. Lovie. She
was nice. Mrs. Lovie is coming
every Wednesday. I feel glad when
Mrs. Lovie comes to nut class - De-
nise Parsons
