Times-Advocate, 1988-01-06, Page 14Page 14 Times -Advocate, January 6, 1988 Sports SpothgI. I, 1t:u k Ki„rt . A keen competitor who Considering the, contribu- tions that Bill Batten made to the sporting community in Ex- eter, it would be wrong to ig- nore his passing in this col- umn. On the other hand, I am probably the least qualified --per- son to write a tribute to the man. I met Bill just a few months ago, and much of what I know about him has been passed down to me from the multitude of friends and admir- ers he had in the community. Those are stories of heroism and guts and a thousand other adjectives that don't quite hit the mark, but I'm not qualified to write them down. Ron Bogart, president of Ex- eter Hawks, has written a spe= cial tribute to Bill which will appear in the program of the coming Junior D tournament his team is hosting this week- end in Exeter. I think he makes a good spokesman. The piece is called simply: A Tribute to Bill Batten. We knew Bill as a reporter -- we recognized him with his note pad and familiar camera. We knew Bill as an avid sup- porter of the sports teams in this area, whether it be hockey, baseball, football or whatever. We knew Bill as a coach -- a keen competitor who liked to play it tough. We knew Bill as a person -- friendly, sincere, honest. A person who could give you a "jab”, but one who could take it when you gave it back. A person who liked to get right to the point about things -- not one for a lot of detail. - We will miss this man around the rink, at the gym, or on the field and we will always remember him as a most hon- est, straight forward reporter at our sporting events in and around Exeter. R.L.B liked to play It tough I do have one little story to tell about Bill Batten. It has to do with our first meeting -- ac- tually with the first words he spoke to me. They are, no doubt, ingrained in my mind for life. I'm fairly certain I failed to do what he asked, but for me, it epitomizes the straight -forward kind of man that he was. This is what he said as he led me into" his office: "Can you impress me in ten minutes? * * * * The fourth annual Lucan Irish Flyers Oldtimers tournament is scheduled to go this weekend (January 8, 9, 10) at the Lucan arena.
