Irish
give Hawks
run for their money
Exeter Hawks met Lucan Irish for
the second time this season Saturday
night when they defeated the host
team 4-2 in a closely fought match.
Dan Brintncll, • acting' coach of
°Hawks, said Monday that the Lucan
team was much improved since the
last meeting of the club.
"They played really welt," Brint-
ncll said. "They've got a problem.
Everybody goes to school up north
but they were all home for the holi-
days."
Brintncll refers to a factor which
has plagued the Lucan team all sea-
son -- many. of their players .trc
away at school through the week.
Only on weekends and holidays is`
the team at full strength:
Saturday night Irish were all to-
gether.
Lucan took a 1.0 lead over the
first place Hawks in the opening
period when 1N1ark Bannon scored
from Brad Atuir and Jesse Crawford
at 14:44. That goal sttxxl until Ge-
off Stater put Exeter on die seor -

Hardy Cup schedules set
After a meeting to decide the
shape of the Hardy Cup semi-
final schedule, it has been an-
nounced that Exeter Mohawks
will' meet Tillsonburg Ma-
roons in a test -of -three series.
There will be two such ser-
ies. The second will be be-
tween Shelburne and Moore -
town Comets.
The winners of each -series
will play a best -of -five compe-
tition to decide who will host
the winner from the Ottawa
District in the Ontario final.
Jim Guenther; head coach of
Mohawks is happy with the
Match -up. "You've got to play
them .at the first or at the last
so it doesn't matter when you
meet them," Guenther said
Monday. •
"What it boils down to is
that Senior A, being one level
higher than B, their players are
maybe a little bit sharper, and
a little better with the stick -
work than the B's."
Because of that subtle differ-
ence between the two leagues.
Guenther is expecting a tough,
physical series which features a
"clutching and grabbing" style
of hockey rather than the wide
open play -of Senior B.
Tillsonburg currently holds a
record of eight wins and eight
losses, as compared to Mohawks
astronomical 18-0-1 tally, but
Guenther notes that when the
series begins, both teams will
have a 0-0 record.
"We're 0-0 to them. It doesn't
mean anything to them, what
our record is.
Series A between=Exeter and
Tillsonburg will begin Friday,
January 8 in Tillsonburg. Ma-
roons will then play in Exeter
January 19 and, if necessary, the
two -teams will meet again for a
• deciding game in Tillsonburg
January 22. All games begin, at
8:30 p.m.
Series B will:begin January 12
in Mooretown, go to Shelburne
January 15 and then return to
Mooretown if necessary January
17.

Palmerston forces Mohawks
Exeter Mohawks squeaked out a
6-4 win over Palmerston 81's Sun-
day night to keep their record untar-
nished, but it was a game that could
have been played better, according
to Jim Guenther.
"We only played as good as we
had to, -which was not to my lik-
ing," said the head coach_of the Sen-
ior B squad. "I wanted to use the
game as a warm-up. to Friday
night's Hardy Cup game."
Mohawks• built up a 2-0 buffer
zone in the first period, but let it
disappear early in the second, only
to regain a tenuous lead on the
strength of two short-handed goals.

It's difficult to decide what is most
astounding about thc Lucan Irish
bout with Scaforth Centenaires Wed-
nesday night.
It might be the fact that three Lu -
can players, Paul Barnes, Scott De-
nomy and Greg Marshall, had six
point nights.
It could be the fact that goalie
Brian Gregory held Seaford' score-
less throughout the game.
But more than anything else, the
17 goals scored by Lucan over the
course of the night seem to. stop the
show -- as it were.
• Banks and Denomy managed three
goals and three assists each in the
17-0 rout over Seaforth. Marshall
scored one goal and hauled in five as-
sists. -

Irish took a 4-0 lead in the first,
addcd six goals in the second and
seven in the third.
Two goals by Barnes at 1:28 and
8:42 of thc first raised thc curtain
on the -goal scoring spectacle. De-
nomy and Brad Muir added one each
to round out thc first.
.Dcnorny led the second perioxt at-
tack -with a goal just two minutes
into the action. Marshall, Jamie
Greig and Ian Craig put thc puck in
the net and then Mark Bannon
scored at 15:57 and 18:05 to end the
frame.
By 5:19 of the third, Grcig, Lovic
and Muir had each scored. Barnes,
Denomy, Craig and Pat Kennedy
followed with goals to finish off
the Seaforth .sttuad.
Ir;sh 7 - Belmont 7
New Years Day provided Lucan
with a battle against Belmont
which stood out in contrast to the
earlier game against Seaforth. Irish
and. Belmont struggled to a 7-7 tic
-after tossing the lead back and
forth.
Lucan jumped into the lead at
5:14 when Denomy connected with
Craig and Dean Doer. Denonty's
goal was countered at 7:01 by.John
Evert and then Jason Clark gave
Belmont a 2-1 lead at 11:15. A
goal front Belmont's Brent Bogart
made Lucan's path that much
tougher.
Dcnomy kept things close, how-
ever with a goal at 16:05.
.Scott Lovic evened the score at
4:04 of the second but Belmont re-
captured the Icad four minutes Tater
on a goal by Howard Hunt.
In a short handed eliiirt, Craig put
the puck in the net to tic the.game
yet again at 14:08.
A marker by .Darren Neil eat tv in

fore two minutes had elapsed when
Richard ('lark put the puck in Lti-
can's • net and there Toted Clark

out of reach for the Irish. -
Lucan rallied and at 13:36 Muir
cashed in for a goal. That laid the
foundation for Joe i-chrey 10 bag

showing on the third period clock.
