Ridgetown college plans seminars
Weekend seminars on such gener-
al interest topics as gardening,
home landscaping, buying farm
land, surviving auction sales, etc.
coupled with over 50 exhibits and
demonstrations on such things as
rope making, toy making, framing
and photography, antiques, wood
carving, heat pumps, wood stoves
and more will be part of the newly
expanded Southwestern. Ontario
Farmers' Weck program set to run
from Monday, January 4 to Sunday,
January 10, 1988 at Ridgctown
College.
According to College organizers
the traditional 5 day Farmers' Week.
format is being expanded to include
a Farm and Food Festival Weekend
for a number of reasons.
"Since its both the fiftieth anni-
versary of Farmers' Week and the
100 anniversary of O.M.A.F. we
wanted to do something special,"
says Farm and Food Festival com-
mittee member, Chris Nanni. "The
anniversary affords us the opportu-
nity to look back on what we've ac-
complished but also rocket ahead
with new and different ideas."
Although the topics being dealt
with during the first part of the
week arc still the meat and potatoes
for farmers in the Southwest, the
weekend activities will appeal to
people who have small acreages and
are marketing more specialized prod-
ucts and to4cople who farm but
also supplerntni-their farm income
with "Hobby Income".
"There arc a growing number of
rural people who are starting small
income earning ventures such as
Toy Making and other crafts, Maple
Syrup Collection, Edible Soybeans,
the growing of Correander and Pea-
nuts etc. The Farm and Food Festi-
val will address topics of interest to
those people and it will do so in a
festive spirit similar to a fair. We
are even planning a Petting Zoo for
children which will feature both
farm -and exotic animals," says Nan-
ni.
The traditional five days of Farm-
ers' Wcek have also been given a
face-lift to commemorate its 50th
anniversary and the O.M.A.F. Cen-
tennial.
An impressive array of high-
powered feature speakers including
Dr. Harry Haines of California; Dr.
Bob McLure, Past Moderator of the
United Church of Canada; Dr. Wal-
ly'Bcversdorf and Dr. J. Phillips of
the University of Guelph, and Dan
Dempster, Vice -President of thc
Horticultural Council of Canada,
will address topics ranging from
World Hunger and Challenges in
Rural Society, to Biotechnology,
Molecular Genetics and Free Trade.
The Honourable Jack Riddell, On-
tario Minister of Agriculture and
Food, will navigate a 1939 John
Deere tractor to the podium where
he will kick off the celebrations and
reflect on the history of O.M.A.F.
in Ontario agriculture as well as
look ahead to what the future will
bring.
