Back by popular demand, a Medieval Feast will take place in the Hall on February 27, 1988. Or- ganized by the Board of Directors, it will be a fund-raising event for the building project. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling co- the box office at (519) 523-9300/ 9225. The Board of Directors of the Blyth Centre for the Arts officially announced a capital building project to the public at a gala reception in Blyth Memorial Hall recently. Architect . Chris Borgal outlined details of the project to the gather- ing of long-time supporters of the Blyth Festival, local municipal councillors, and village business. people. Planning for the project was initiated two years ago when a feasi- bility study was conducted to exam- ine the future rehearsal and technical needs and safety standards of the Blyth Festival. The Board of Direc- tors has unanimously endorsed Bor- gal's plan. It includes building a safer techni- cal facility onto the existing garage on Dinsley Street, purchase and ex- tended use of the "bank building" for offices and rehearsal space, and an eventual link between that build- ing and Memorial Hall. Numerous improvements to the back stage are - requires, as well as general mainte- nance and upgrading within the theatre auditorium. The total projected cost of the project is 51,600,000. However, Find Bo`ard President Marian Dou- cette, the Board of Directors voted their support of the plan contingent on sufficient government funding becoming available to match private donations. At present, briefs are be- ing submitted to both the federal and provincial governments. She also remarked' on the meeting with the Blyth Village Council who re- ceived the plans most enthusiasti- cally. A sense of careful, considered planning also punctuated the re- marks of long[time Board member Sheila Richards. President of the Board at the time of the last build- ing campaign, she reflected on the tremendous need which that expan- sion project filled in 1980-82 which included the air conditioning, dress- ing rooms and ramp for the physi- cally disabled. "Now," she said, "we must take another step in order to keep pace with the artistic growth of our theatre". Artistic Director Katherine Kaszas further elaborated on this comment. In her remarks she said, "our artistic plans have been severely hampered for the past few years by•lack of space. This campaign will meet our current needs and.our future goals". She also added, "as a major influen- tial cultural force in- this country and beyond, we look to our many Former photographer studying to be chef Stratford Chefs School is now write provincial examinations to be - into its fifth season with 30 stu- come Journeymen Cooks. dents attending.
