Exeter Mohawks announce a strong line-up The lines are drawn and Exeter Mohawks are ready to take to the ice against Durham Huskies Friday night. The coaching staff and the executive seem confident that Exeter hockey fans are in for a season' of good entertainment. "At this point we've got 20 hockey players signed and two to go," says' Mohawks coach Jim Guenther. "We want to carry 22 as a total. Basically the squad is picked." Guenther holds true to the theory that the 1987-88 edition of the Mohawks is going to be a power house team. - "On paper, we've got a stronger team than any I've been associated with." Doc Campbell, manager of the team, was good enough to give me a run-down on the roster. For the fans.who are looking for a little more of what they got last season, there will be some familiar faces behind the blue line. Goaltender Rick Pikul and defencemen Randy Kraut, Barry Baynham and Ron Elliott have all signed and have been approved. Returning forwards Who have signed with the club are I3rian Mercer, Bill Glover, Kris Bedard, Scott Eccles and Al Gates. Dal e Gibbon is back after a year's absence. As for Mohawk new -comers, the list is impressive. Randy Hildebrant will make a home for himself between the pipes. Corn- ing from Tillsonburg Maroons Senior A club, Hildebrant is one of six ex -St. Marys Lincolns on the team. The rear -guard will be bolstered by Mark Soehner, fresh from New Hamburg Towers Senior B team Mike Zoretich who last played at the University of Windsor, and Jeff Warren, an ex -lint who played out last season with the Senior B Lambeth Flyers. The new defensive line-up is rounded out by Dave Timmerman, who graduated from,Fxeter Junior D Ilawks at the end of last season. On the forward line, newcomers include Randy Bailey from Senior Dorchester Dolphins, Quincy Wilker, who last played Senior AAA in Stratford, Jeff Shipley, St. Marys Lincolns captain last Sports Spotlight by dark Bisset year, and wingers Paul Barton and Dave Randerson who played American college hockey at New Hampshire and Bowling Green respectively. Still unsigned is ex- Linc centre John Kernick. The club is hoping to pick up two more of Kernick's Lincoln team mates, John Rowland and Rob Mackie. Guenther is confident that Rowland.and Mackie will sign before Friday night's game. - • "I think they definitely will -sign," he said. "I think it's just a " ,`M ate,, eg __"_..._....,.. .,o. straightened out matter of getting things straightened out at home." Hardy Cup The Hardy Cup, a nation-wide competition open to Senior A and B clubs will be hosted this year by the Ontario Hockey Association. That will bring championship teams from the Maritimes to the home of the OHA winners in April. Of the 30 Ontario Senior A and B teams, 12 have made a com- mitment to the Hardy Cup playdowns and Exeter Mohawks are one of those teams. Other Senior teams from the Central Senior B league which plan on playing in the series are Durham,. Tavistock and Elora. Along with the Mohawks, they will play games within their own group to determine a league winner by December 27. Four league winners will then set up a game format to determine an OHA representative. Condolences To all the fans who spent the holiday Monday weeping into their turkey dinner over the unceremonious demise of that club -- you know, the one that beat the Toronto Blue Jays such a short time ago -- I offer my condolences. I know what it feels like when your team sort of fizzles out just when you expect them to burst into flame. After all, I was the guy who thought Canada could win the America's cup. I thought the Jays could win the World Series. And I thought that Harold Ballard was finally going to fire Gerry McNamara. Silly me.
