The strength of the Homemaking service is bound up in the value most people place on living in a 'home of one's own', where one can feel independent, useful and secure." Dr. Cowen first asked for homecare to help with his diabetic wife Dorothy, and for an injury on his leg which refused to heal. He called the Homecare office at Huronview, and a case worker came to assess his needs. Homecare then contacted Town and Country Homemakers to supply the necessary service. Initially trained homemakers' from the agency came twice a week, stay- ing for three hours in the afternoon. The hours slowly increased as Mrs. Cowen's condition worsened. When she returned from a hospital stay, her husband asked for 24-hour service. Pat Devine, Goderich, is one of the Town and Country Homemakers assigned to the Cowens. Pat has been a Homemaker for two years, and loves her job. "I like people, and working with the elderly", .Pat said. Besides preparing meals, doing laundry. windowcleaning, vacuuming and other housework, Pat helps Mrs. Cowen bathe and dress. She is also part of a team of VON nurses and physiotherap1Sts who care for Mrs. Cowen. (Homemakers attend to per- sonal but not medical needs.) Pat describes her. relationship with the Cowens as "like rent-a- granddai4ghter", explaining thatbe- ing a Homemaker is not all work. "We have a great time. We go for drives, or out to spend the day at Dr. Cowen's cottage at Grand Bend when the weather is good.- Dorothy smiles all the time we are there. We also spent a few hours at this year's Ex- eter Fair", Pat said. • Pat explained that Homemakers fit in with their clients' lifestyle. They give help where needed, and foster in- dependence where clients can manage for themselves. Clients' friends and family are en- couraged to visit. In providing care for the elderly. the goal is to allow people to stay in their own homes, continuing their nor- mal lives, for as long as possible. Part of Pat's satisfaction with her job comes,. from being a Town and Country Homemaker. She has words of high praise for the agency, pointing out their primary concern is the well- being of their clients. In addition, she said the agency personnel are "amenable about hours, easy to talk to, and treat their Homemakers like persons as well as employees". Unlike housekeepers, Homemakers receive skills training from agency. and community professionals on topics such as aging and attitudes, body mechanics and Alzheimer's Disease. In addition, a 120 -hour train- ing program is offered by 19 com- munity colleges in the province to enable Homemakers' to give nutri- tional counselling, home manage- ment and personal, palliative and child care. • 'Town and Country Homemakers take their training at Conestoga Col- lege at Vanaslra. Pat received. her Ontario Homemakers Certificate - and.a place on the honour roll - after successfully completing the two -days - a -week, 10 -week course. Town and Country. Homemakers will be conducting their annual can- vass the third week in October. This year their goal is $40.000. ' Of that amount, $15,000 is designated for Homemaker training. $10,000 to subsidize those clients who qualify for the Homemaker service but can't afford to pay the total cost. and $10,000 will be used for alterations to the Wingham headquarters. Because of the increase in services and staff, and the purchase of a com- puter, the agency is converting the former ripstairs apartment into addi- tional office space. A $69,000 grant froln'lhe Trillium Foundation (which dispenses the pro- fits from.provincial lotteries) will be used to pay part of the $85.000 cost of purchasing the computer, and accom- panying software, installing it; and training personnel in its use. The re- maining'$5,000 raised from the can- vass will also.be spent on the com- puter project.
