meet for second time
By Karen McKay
Monday September 21. the Grand
Bend group II met again for their se-
cond meeting. This meeting was held
at Mary Coeck's home. We started off
the meeting with the 4-H pledge and
the roll call "Name the can and/or a
frozen vegetable your family eats".
We talked about the different types
of canned fruit and vegetables which
included Canada fancy, Canada stan-
dard, Canada number 1. Ontario
number 1, and number one.
We learned when to use these types.
After this we had a taste test, and no,
it wasn't Pepsi. Our leaders wanted
to see if we could tell the difference
between juices, concentrated and con-
stituted fruit juice, fruit drink, flavour
crystals, and fruit nectars.
The one I liked best was the concen-
trated fruit juice. After finding out the
answers we set to work on our recipe
which was apple pancakes. One of the
new things we learned was how to
separate egg whites.
When the pancakes were cooked
and eaten, everyone said they liked
them. After looking over the home ac-
tivities, we closed the meeting and
left for home.

Elimville 4-H
By Lynn Poortinga
September 23, the Elimville I club
held their second meeting of "A Taste
of Ontario Fruits and Vegetables".
The meeting wasopened with the
4-11 pledge. The press report of
meeting one was read at this time by
Sarah Kerslake, and the minutes by
Lynn Poortinga.
The meeting dealt with the different
grades of Canadian fruits and
vegetables. A comparison was made
between Canada Fancy and Canada
Choice fruit cocktails. We then com-
pared the tastes of six different types
of orange drink, and decided what
kind they were.
After doing all this the meeting was
closed, and everyone had a taste of
the apple pancake Linda Johns had
made, which tasted delicious. The
next meeting was scheduled for
September 30, 1987 at the home of
Tina Taylor.
A GROUP SHOT -- Clerk Adams, (left), student council social convener, poses with The Box from Mon-
treal. The group is nominated for five Juno awards. Such talent does not come cheap and will cost the
student council at least 51,500. "We'll be happy if we break even," said Patty O'Toole, student council
treasurer, adding that the concert is not to make money, but to welcome the new grade nines.

Banquet winds up slo-pitch
By DOUG McNAIR •
Ailso Croig
Friday evening September 25 at
the Parkhill Community Centre was
the wind down of another year of slow
pitch baseball for the ladies and
men's league.
The newly organized Parkhill
Legion auxiliary catered a delicious
sit'down beef banquet and George and
Nick D.J. Service supplied the danc-
ing music.
After the meal the trophies were
handed out with Brinsley ladies pro-
ving best in the league for '87 and 13
North Stars were present and all were
up to receive the trophy.
These happy, fun filled ladies teams
are going to be tough again next year
too.
Already presented at the tourna-
ment at Weldon Park at the end of
August were the 'A' trophy to Cuddy
Fillies of Strathroy and 'B' trophy to
West Williams. Mart Jones was on
hand tp represent the Umpire
Association.
Ron Leaky president and Jim

a retiring A trophy to Champs
Parkhill pitmen. Most improved
team were Nairn. 'A' trophy was
presented to Brian Parnell of Lucan
Hi Life team, 'B' trophy to Strathroy.
Another Ailsa Craig's business is'
history. 'Owner Morley Wadsworth
has sold his Pro Hardware Store
which was closed in 1985 when retire-
ment and travel seemed to be the
reason.
Wadsworth said "I bought the pro-
perty in 1947 from Cliff Blackman
who was operating a tin smith
business next to Katherine's Ice
Cream Parlour (Kay Brown's
mother). "I worked with my father
Delmar, who owned' Ailsa Craig,
Nairn and Rural Telephone System
before selling it to Bell Telephone.
After the purchase, Morley and
Marion lived at the store for 15 years
or so, raised two boys of a family and
have moved once other than their pre-
sent residence on Queen Street N. in
Ailsa Craig.
A lot of businesses have come and
gone in the last 38 years since I've
owned ' the Main St. store says
Morley. Stewarts Seeds started small,
grew and grew than sold out, Whitey's
Barber Shop and Pool Room, next
was a bake shop, Shipways Garage
and Snack Bar, Brantson Supertest
dation, Pongs Cafe, Allis Chambers

By Julie Kaak
The leaders for the Crediton V Club
of Ontario Fruit and Vegetables are
Diane Kaak and Linda O'Rourke.
Our executive is president - Leah
Hartman, vice-president - Lynn Rut -
ten. secretary - Shari Palen, press
reporter - Julie Kaak, youth leader -
Jeanette Kaak.
Other members include Rosanne
Dietrich, Darlene and Debbie
O'Rourke, and two new members

Our first meeting which was held at
Linda O'Rourke's home was called
"Proper Eating Keeps You
Swinging".
We learned how the major nutrients
and dietary fiber in fruits and
vegetables promote vibrant health,
also we discussed proper and healthy
snacking.
Later.we played a guessing game
on fruits and vegetables, then we
sampled hot apple juice with a stick
of cinnamon and also Gazpacho.
Meeting two was held at plane
Kaak's home. The title was "Super-
market Choices, It's Up To You". We
learned the difference between
Canada Fancy, Canada Choice and
Canada Standard, for this we com-
pared peaches.
We also had a drink test, we sampl-
ed apple, orange and grape and had
to tell which was the pure juice. fruit
flavored crystals, and fruit nectar.
We started our bean sprout experi-
ment so we can see the results by the
end of this club. Youth leader
Jeanette Kaak then had us do some
commercials on a fruit or vegetable.
We then sampled Marinated
Vegetable Salad.
Garage, Mark's Store, Meadow's

tgomery Meat Store, The Egg

and Stephen Funeral Home and
dozens more".
Many hours have been spent play-
ing checkers or domino games over
the oil stove at Wadsworth's. But one
game Morely still plays but has to
drive farther to play it, is lawn
bowling. -
He recalls that all the stores would
close on Wednesday afternoon and
we'd be out lawn bowling over beside
Morton's Dairy.
People are going to miss
Wadsworth's Hardware becgpse it
was a known fact, if Wadsworth's
didn't have it, they didn't make it or
they quit making it. Morley's friend-
ly hello and handshake will be miss-
ed by all.
Saturday's nice weather proved to
be a perfect day for the Nairn and
District Playschool's Fun Day at
Nairn Mennonite church. Moms,
dads, grandparents and friends en-
joyed the games and the tricycle
races. The course was 'cleverly map-
ped out around the outside of, the
church with several obstacles to con-
tend with.
-After getting a fill of hot dogs.
chips, apples and other goodies,
Megan Diagle for the girls andAaron
Bates for the boys received their
prizes for the best decorated trike.
Jeremy Gasnek won the prize for
having the most sponsors. The prizes
were donated by Ailsa Craig Home
