launches book
"!tear the Pennies Dropping" a
hook written by Gwyn Whilsmilh,
former, reporter and columnist with
the Times Advocate, is now on sale.
It's a personal account of one family's
capacity to bear hardships and share
blessings when the latter were few
and the former all too common. A
story told with humour and
reverence. it draws the best out of
what was a bad situation: the Depres-
sion years in Saskatchewan.
Whilsmilh's parents, Alex and Lot-
tie Cann, left Ontario in 1913 to settle
'on a Saskatchewan farm, and she
weaves a story of a pioneer communi-

The focus is sharp, and the scenes
sometimes painful and harsh, but
the grace and solidarity of family and
friends warms even the coldest of
prairie winters.
The author chose the title "Hear the
Pennies Dripping" tram the lines 01
an o1(1 hymn she used to sing in Sun-
day Sehoa and because during the
Depression of the 1930s everyone had
to count their pennies and know
where each one fell.
Gwyn moved to Exeter with her
parents in 1940. Iler father and two
brothers ('arfrey and Arthur operated
a successful grain 'and feed business
here for many years before selling to
United ('o -operatives. She married
Arthur 11'hilsrnith a building contrac-
tor. They lived in Exeter until 1978
when they moved to St. Joseph.
1t1r. and Mrs. Douglas ('ook of Ren -
sail held a reception Sunday after-
noon when family and friends drop-
ped in to help celebrate the launching
of the book in this area. Gwyn travels
to her childhood home of Brock.
Saskatchewan in October to introduce
the book there. \

is on sale at. Pincher's in Exeter
where 111►(s. Whilsmitt) will be on the
afternoon and evening of Friday, Oc-
' tober 2 to autograph books-. It will also
be available at the Times Advocate.

The monthly meeting of the
Women's Ministries of the Pente-
costal Church was held at the home
of Mrs. Shirley Prouty with 11
members :present .
The meeting was opened by singing
hymns. "Bring Your Vessels; Not a
Few". and "All that thrills My soul
is .Jesus" with Mrs. Leila Finkbeiner
at the organ. Mrs. Carol Rodgers led
in prayer. Mrs. Jean 'Triebner also led
in prayer for the touch of God upon
Mrs Rodgers' body:
The roll call was answered with a
scripture veise containing the word
-gather' by each member. The
minutes of the last meeting were read
by Mrs. Ada Triebner. The
treasurer's report was read by Miss
Marion Triebner. Mrs. Ruth McLaren
read an article on "Interesting
Prayer".
The missionary reading was given
by :Mrs. Jean Triebner about Liberia.
Mrs. Ella Tinney read an article on
"Creation and the Fall."
Mrs. Leila Finkbeiner offered
prayer before she gave her messag(
%%inchwasalso entitled "The Lord is
My Shepherd''. Ile truly is our
shepherd in every. time of need if we
will but look to Him. Prayer time
followed with each member
participating.
A delicious lunch was served by
\Irs. Ruth McLaren and Idena Des-
jardine assisted by the hostess.
