playoffs underway
The preliminary playoff rounds got
under way in Exeter soccer action
this week.
Exeter II reached the A group with
an easy 3-0 win over Nairn.
Exeter IV played well against
Lucan but their effort was not enough
to win the game. Both teams scored
once in regulation time but Lucan 1
.got the winner in overtime.
Scoring for Exeter IV was Jeff
McLean. Exeter IV was sent to the B
rounds.
The playoffs were played Saturday
in Bryanston with four Exeter teams
participating, two in the A group and
two in the B group. All four Exeter
teams won their opening game and
went into the semifinals.
In the A group, Exeter I took on a
very pesky Grand Bend team and
managed to beat them 2-0. Greg Geof-
frey came up big, scoring his first
goal of the season. Dave Farquhar
scored Exeter's second goal.
Ryan Beattie played well.
Exeter II came up against Lucan I
and beat them.
In this B group, Exeter III got a hat
trick performance from Luke Sims
enroute to a 5-0 win over Ilderton.
Also scoring were Jason Grenier and
Lucas Forest.
Playing well were Sean Lynn and
Paul Gregus.
Exeter IV came up against Nairn
I and beat them on a goal by Jeff
McLean.
Trevor Skinner and Jerry Geurts
turned in good performances.
In the semi-finals Exeter did not
fare as well. All four teams were
eliminated.
In their loss against Lucan II1, Ex-
eter I got excellent performances
frdm.Anglela Higgs, Sean Beattie and
Steven Hern as they played to a 5-0
loss at the hands of Lucan III.
Exeter I did not do much better. St.
Columban defeated them 5-0.
Luke Sims scored both goals in Ex-
eter III's 5-2 loss against Coldstream.
Jeff Campbell arid Presley Mauer
played well in a losing -cause.
Exeter IV played well, especially
Sara Szabo and Brent Hartman, as
they went down to defeat against
Nairn II by a close 1-0, score.
Despite the bad weather it was a
good tournament and the kids had lots
of fun. The coaches would like to
thank all the parents for their support
on Saturday the game on a long shot by Sivichay

minutes left in regulation time. In the
overtime, Exeter I created the best
chances but the defence anchored by
Joel Campbell withstood the pressure
and penalty shots had to decide a
beautifully played game.
On the seventh penalty shot the
game went to Exeter II.
In the semi-finals, Exeter II came
up against a surprisingly well playing
Grand Bend team. It looked as though
Exeter II had given their all in
beating their Exeter rivals and they
had nothing left in this game.
Grand Bend came away with a well
deserved 3-0 win. Grand Bend then

Saturday also saw the Mosquito
tournament being played in Exeter.
Both Exeter entries had earlier
qualified for the A side of the tourna-
ment with Grand Bend Lucan and St.
Columban.

In the opening round, both Exeter
I and -Exeter II came up against each
other. After a loss and a tie earlier in
the season, Exeter II came up big in
an exciting and closely played game.
Exeter II opened the score on a
break by Jamie Rolph. Exeter I tied
went on to defeat St. Columban 1-0 n
the A final. It was a well deserved win
for a determined Grand Bend squad.
The season will end next week with
the atoms, Pee Wees under 11 girls
and Bantams involved in their
playoffs.

Campbell didn't make this save, but he came up with a solid perfor-
mance and gave his team an overtime shootout win.
Grand Bend Bantam boys
are Usborne League champs
The Grand Bend Bantam boys soft-
ball team won the Usborne league
championship last week. Playing on
a neutral diamond in Kirkton, the GB
team won with a close 5-4 score. Brian
Baird pitched really well, with a
number of good plays from the whole
team, said coach Brian Pearen, and
assistant coach Sherwood Eddy.
Rob Pearen hit a triple with the
bases loaded for the win. Also with
two big hits and two RBIs was
backcatcher Jarett Kobe.
The team will be celebrating at
Green Haven Trailer Park, GB, on
Sunday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m. A
game against the parents will precede
the pot -luck dinner. Congratulations!
Win two/loose two
The GB peewee boys softball team ,
Hawks,
Exeter Hawks and Lucan Irish met
in Lucan Sunday and played to a 4-4
tie after Lucan made a come -back in
the third period'of the Junior D exhibi-
tion game.
Leading 4-1 at the end of the second,
Hawks allowed the momentum to
was not able to put away their gloves
after game three or four. After winn-
ing the first two games, it came down
to the fifth and final last Thursday in
Grand Bend.
Lieury pitcher Jamie 'Meddle held
in and the team defeated Grand Bend.
Both teams displayed good sport-
smanship. Special thanks to coaches
Joe Green, Garry Desjardine and
player -organizer Bob Lovie in this
last game.
The peewee boys voted for awards,
and MVP award went to Shane
Green, and the MIP trophy was won
by Brad Page.

Downtown potties capture title
Downtown Dollies are the 1987
ladies slo-pitch champions.
They proved their worth on the
weekend after beating Big '0' in the
A final of the ladies Slo-pitch playoff
tournament.
Dollies went undefeated in the two
day tournament, fighting their way
into the A final and then handing Big
'0' a 9-6 loss late Saturday night.
The Downtown. squad began their
quest for the championship Friday
night when they downed Good Times
7-1. Saturday afternoon the Dollies
edged South Huron llospital (SHH! )
3-2, earning a bye into the final game.
Shelley Weber was voted most
valuable player in the A champion-
ship game.
Big '0' also went undefeated in
three games to advance to the final
where they met their match in game
number four after a lengthy rain
delay.
Big 'O' routed Beat -Hers Friday
night 14-3 They went on to beat Alby
11-8 Saturday morning in the first of
three games they played that day. Big
'0' handed Sundowners a 5-1 loss and
earned a birth in the finals.
In the B division of the tournament.
Good Times and Beat -Hers went head
to head in the B final to decide the
secondary champion. Good Times
came out on top with an 8-4 win over
their opponents.
Like Big '0' in the A division, Beat -
Hers found themselves playing three
consecutive games Saturday. That
seems to have been the deciding fac-
tor in both divisions.
Despite the loss, Beat -Hers produc-
ed the most valuable player of the
game. Short stop Tracey. Livingston
was honoured with the title after the
final.
After losing to Downtown Dollies
Friday night, Good Times beat HP
Devils 6-1 in extra innings to advance.
to the B final.
Beat -Hers were pushed into the B
division by Big '0' Friday night. They
came up against Cheers, winning nar-
rowly bya score of 11-10. Beat -Hers
picked up their second win after
downing Electrolites 8-5.

number of Midget aged players and
one Bantam aged player in the after-
noon game to get a look at what they
have to work with. Bogart was hap-
py with the outcome.

ference for both teams. Fred Gregus.

Bender who allowed one goal in the
second and three in the third.

every Hawk attempt to score. He
replaced Mark Orr and Mike Unzma-
jer who each saw action earlier in the
game.
Hawks made several cuts im-
mediately following the game.
Lucan Irish head coach Dave Rev-
ington, who acted as co -coach for the
club last season said after the game
Sunday that it was too early in the
pre -season to draw any conclusions
from the exhibition game.
"We've only had two practices, so
a lot of the kids 1 don't even know too
well, but 1 thought they came back
and played pretty well in the last half
of the game,': Revington said.
He added that almost half of the
line-up was made of rookies.
!tevington said that the Irish are
facing a season of rebuilding after los-
ing several players who went over-
age. The Irish won the O11A Junior D
championship last season on the
strength of a well -seasoned squad of
players.
"It will be a completely different
kind of team (this season)." Rev-
ington said. "We won't have the of-
fence, we won't have the speed. and
we won't have the size."
"We lost six of our guys to over -age.,
It's hard to replace those guys with
16 -year-olds."
