norm saves on heating costs
The decrease in the price of oil last
year contributed to an unexpected net
income of $14,427, those attending the
twenty-second annual meeting of Blue
Water Rest Home were told. The
unanticipated drop saved the home
$10,000 on their heating bill.
Administrator Josef Risi noted in
his detailed report that total operating
expenses for the fiscal year which
ended March 31, 1987 totalled $977,593
and revenue was $992,020.
The estimated budget for the cur-
rent year is $1,048,380. Salaries ac-
count for $774,459 of this amount, and
staff benefits add another $90,889.
Expected revenue this year is
$1,045,583. Residents of the home pay
$559,470 or 54.5 percent, and a provin-
cial subsidy of $448,533 will contribute
another 42.9 percent.
Hay Reeve Lionel Wilder presented
a cheque of $4,000 from the township
to pay part of the cost of the new fur-
niture in the foyer and the main
lounge. Hay township had contributed
$2,000 to purchase the original fur-
niture 20 years ago that is now being
replaced.
Wayne Meidinger presented a ser-
vice awards plaque to the -home. The
first four people to be recognized are
lir. Charles Wallace, Mrs. Annie Van
Raay, Orval Wassman and 1986-87
board chairman Ian McAllister.
McAllister brought up two matters
being considered by the board. He
said directors are discussing enlarg-
ing the building to provide more
privacy for residents intheirrooms.
The board is debating whether or not
to add more beds at the same time.
At present the Rest Home has a
64 -bed capacity, plus the 10 apart-
ment units. .
Dr. Wallace, medical director of the
!tome, spoke up to say that when the
home was originally planned, govern-
ment and architects had designed the
facility so that in future additional
wings could ultimately increase the
total accommodation of the main
building to 100.

Sunday was the semi-annual tame-
ly dinner for the residents. Needless
to say, we had a full house.
Our special thanks goes to our
musicians, Pearl Ann Martin, Grace
Martin, Idella Gabel and John
Warner for their contributions during
the afternoon on both piano and
organ, to Lois Thiel who supplied the
beautiful freshrose buds which grac-
ed the tables, the residents who
helped peel potatoes and those who
helped clean straberries for the
strawberry short cake, and of course
to our indispensable members of the
Ladies Auxiliary for their assistance
jn the kitchen and dining rooms.
The 22nd annual meeting of the
home was held last Tuesday evening.
The only change on the board was the
resignation of Tony Bedard who was
replaced by Claire Deichert, member
at large.
The sympathy of residents andstaff
is extended to the family of the late
Mrs. May Rowcliffe.
Mr. Stanley Mitchell has returned
from University hospital and -Mrs.
Beatrice Overholt is still a patient in
South Huron Hospital.
The residents enjoyed a nice bus
ride on Tuesday afternoon. thanks to
Mr. Marc Chalut. The annual picnic
sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary for
the residents was held on Wednesday
afternoon. _Games were played and
the music of the Huron Strings of
Seaforth and Clinton was thoroughly
enjoyed. We hope they will be able to
return in the near future. Following
the program, a barbecue was held
and even though some residents
hesitate to be taken outside normal-
ly, a large number thoroughly en-
joyed watching and eating the hot
food right from the barbecue. Again
we way thank you to all who
volunteered to help.
We welcome Mrs. Clara Hoffman to
the home. She previously lived in the
Maplewoods Apartments.
The chapel service was cancelled
because of the family activities.

McAllister said the matter ha
arisen at this time as Huronview is
being studied for future renovation
and possible decentralization. If this
occurred, he speculated on the
possibility of some portion presently
served by Huronview being added to
the Blue Water Rest Home.'
Wilder interjected to say he believ-
ed the Huronview program has been
deferred for the present because of
the unexpectedly high projected
costs.. He predicted nothing will be
done there until the next decade.
The other topic the board has been
discussing is whether or not to impose
a mandatory retirement age of 65.
The present constitution contains no
policy on retirement. McAllister said
that board members are concerned
that as some employees age, they
may experience difficulties carrying
out duties which require physical
strength. Another argument in favour
us uwttwswry retirement would be the
creation of more openings for young
people wishing to find work in their
community.
• Dr. Wallace disagreed, arguing
that people aged 65 are younger
physically and mentally now than In
previous generations. He asked if the
board was prepared to provide
pensions.
McAllister replied that no one on
the board received a company -paid
pension, and some had been forced to
retire at 65. He said if the policy was
introduced it would not be made
retroactive.
A show of hands on the issue pro-
duced 16 in favour of mandatory
retirement and five opposed.
Claire Deichert was acclaimed to
the board of directors as a member
at large.
Robert Westlake was elected
1987-88 chairman of the board.
