Pool, playground programs in place Tdr summ
Summer officially arrives next Sunday and the following day
the staff at the Exeter pool begins its summer operations and
Wednesday the pool will be open.
The last chance for swimming registration is tonight, Wednes-
day between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. at the Rec Centre.
Susan Boyle is back as pool supervisor Tor another year as is
her assistant Karla Josephson. Filling the positions of instructor -
guard -are Heather Hern, Marilyn Hamilton, Teresa McCarter and
Brenda Vanderlaan while Susan Coates is a part-time guard.
The swimming program available at the local pool covers all
ages beginning with the Seawees category for youngsters from six
months -to two and a half years and Aquatots for those from the
-Seawees maximum to five years of age.
Adult. swimming is available each evening during weekdays
from 6 to 6:30 p.m.for a minimal chargeof $1 and lessons are
available upon request for $2.
A volunteer. staff training program is being set up this year. This
is an excellent opportunity for up-and-coming lifeguards to get
valuable experience in teaching and Iifeguarding by assisting
regular pool staff with the pool program.
A maximum of 10 -volunteers between the ages of 13 and 16
years will be accepted. Each volunteer receives an Exeter Pool
Volunteer T -Shirt. Anyone interested should call the Rec Centre
at 235-2833 or •Sue Boyle at 235-0373.
Any teens interested in becoming a lifeguard should begin with
the bronze medallion, bronze cross and Red Cross leader courses.
The Exeter Barracudas swim team will again be in action par-
ticipating in four local Inter -County Swim Association meets dur-
ing the summer. The instructor and coach will be Deb Oke.
Sports Spotlight

Participants do not have to be exceptional swimmers to try
out for the team, but must be able to swim the length of the pool.
This swim team offers an excellent opportunity for youngsters to
improve their swimming skills through conditioning, stroke cor-
rection and extra pool time.
The pool will be open for public swimming Mondays, Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 2 and 3:30 p.m.

and 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Fridays the evening hours change to bet-
ween 6:30 and 8 p.m and Saturdays and Sundays it's 2 to 4 p.m.
and 6:30 to 8 p.m. '*-
Registration will be held July 6 for the upcoming sports and
Bert and Ernie programs. The wading pool at Victoria Park opens
the saine day and will be open each weekday afternoon between
the hours of 2 and 4 p.m., weather permitting.
Susan Vanderspek is co-ordinator for the sports and
playground programs and leaders are Shelley Tomes, Dianne
Dearing and Paulette Rothbauer.
One special attraction has been booked for the South Huron
Centre grounds for the evening of August 30. That's the night the
California Cuties will be'in town to meet the Exeter Royals in a
fun -filled fastball game. Proceeds from the game go to the
agricultural building washroom committee fund.
The Stephen township swimming pool at Huron Park will also
open the same day as Exeter and follow a similar schedule with
lessons beginning June 29.
Julie Russell is the Stephen swim co-ordinator, Liz Cottrell is
her assistant and instructor, lifeguards are Stacey Somerville and
David Josephson with Scott Russell as cashier.
Don't forget the slo-pitch tournament this weekend at the South
Huron Rec Centre grounds. It's a mixed tourney sponsored by the
Exeter Mohawks, senior 'B' hockey club.
Exeter 11 squirt soccer Team still unbeaten
The squirt action this week Exeter
I played at home against unbeaten
Coldstream. Exeter 1 played well with
Ryan Beattie and Adam Johns play-
ing well. The starring role however
was for David Farquhar who scored
five goals to lead Exeter one to a 5-1
victory.
Exeter .11 remained unbeaten in
squirt play as they -defeated ?lairs I
by a 4-0 score. Trevor Boersma pac-
ed the attack with two goals. Singles
were notched by. Geoff Mauer and
Scott Rasenberg. Jeff Rathwelt and

A red-hot foursome comprised of
Dorothy Marks, Jean Little, Noreen
McCann and Jean Crerar scored top
honours in the Texas Scramble at Ex-
eter -golf. course Tuesday morning.
Their low gross was 44.
The runner-up group of Jean Smith,
Bette Smith. Marg Lovell and Betty
Coates finished with a,score of 47.
About 28 ladies participated and
there were some other good scores.

Exeter III travelled to Grand Bend
for a game against a strong Grand
Bend team. Luke Sims scored late
in the second half to salvage a tie for
the Exeter team and also came close
to scoring the winner. Final score 1-1.
Eric Groot and Kelly Farwell were
excellent for Exeter III. Jeff McLean
was outstanding offensively as well as
defensively as Exeter IV played to a
1-1 stand off with a strong Lucan III
team. Exeter IV trailed for most of
the game but McLean notched the
equalizer late in the second half. Final
score 1-1.
Special mention for their effort in
this game goes to Sara Sabo and Rob
McIntosh.
In Atom play r:zeter 1 travelled to
St. Columban for a game. Coach Ray

effort his team put forth as they were
defeated by a 7-2 score by a very

Exeter II fared better this week as
they managed to tie Bryanston by a
1-1 score. No details were known at
press time.
In Mosquito play Exeter II played
at home against Nairn I. According
to coach Simon Van Dam his team put
forth a real team effort in their first
- win of the season.with every player
in a starring role. Scorers were Joel
Campbell two and Mark Foster one.

each. Final score 5-2 for Exeter.
The Exeter I Mosquito's travelled
to Ilderton and kept their unbeaten
streak alive as the defeated Ilderton
Liv a 4-1 score. They have now won

The regular Ironwood ladies night

The winner of low gross in 'A' flight
was hazel Beaver with a 45 with
Janet Wedlake taking low net with a
:33.
Capturing low gross in 'B' flight
was Phyllis Hayman shooting a 52
followed by Donna Ireland taking low
net with a 33.
'C' flight low gross was won by Pat-
ty Coleman with a 51 and low'net by
Vivian Cowan with a 36.
Shooting the longest drive on No. 1
was Gail Murray and closest to the
pin on No. 4 was awarded to Ruth
Mercer.
Skins were picked up by Hazel
Beaver, Karen Bowerman, and Liz
Hodgins.
Monday, June 22 will be sponsored

second in motocross
Local motocross, Brian Blackburn,
currently holds second place overall
in Ontario in the Senior 500 cc class.
After seven races so far this season,
and having placed consistently in the
top three, Brian stands only six points
behind the leader. Craig White of
Mississauga.
Brian will be racing his Bully Gul-
ly Honda in the Senior Support Class
at the upcoming Expert National
Motocross Championships at Hully
Gully, before travelling to Moto Park
in Chatsworth where he hopes to earn
valuable points in his quest' for the
provincial cham ' ionshi
Welsh were excellent performers for
Exeter L
. In pee wee action the game between
Exeter II and Lucan was .postponed
and the only information available on
the game between Grand Bend and
Exeter I was the final score of 4-1 for
• Grand Bend.
In Bantam play the Exeter ban-
tams came up flat in their third game
of the season after winning the first
two handily. A very strong
Wallacetown sent the Exeter kids
home with a 5-0 defeat. It will be back
to basics for coach Martin DeBruyn
and his squad. Special mention this
week to Helen Wagner our referee
coordinator for doing an excellent job
lining up refs for all our home games

This was also the first week for the
under 11 girls team in the Strathroy
league. For their first game the girls
gave it a good try against the
Delaware girls. The three goals
scored however were not enough as
they were defeated by a 5-3 score.
Scoring for Exeter were Janiel
Lambert two and Kristy Ahrens one.
