Clandeboye WI celebrates 80th birthdoyas90 attend History Day
About 90 history lovin' people en-
joyed Clandeboye 'History Day on
Saturday. St. James -Anglican churth
a beautiful historical old church in
itself. was the perfect setting for such
an occasion. Clandeboye Women's In-
stitute were -celebrating their 80th an-
niversary as an organization.

anniversary.

The plaques were accepted by

Coughlin. who thanked Mr. Laidlaw
on behalf of the W.I. members.
!.1any thanks to Merl Culbert for his
part in the presentation. As each per-
son signed the guest book they were
given a keepsake book mark with the
Hunte and Country ('rest of the W.I.
in gold lettering. Clandeboye
H'ome's Irstilute 19(17-1987.
Fifteen large posters. made to
stand upright for easy viewing mere
placed in every second pew so people
could walk between to see them at
their best. The headings on the
posters were. Churches, Schools.
('.'tneteries,:several pictures of old
landmarks in the area, many old
school pictures, happenings in the
Women's Institute over the Years.
Harness racing in the Clandeboye
area is stilt veru much alive with al
leas) 30 recent pictures of the
horsemen shown in the winners cir-
cle with some oldei pictures
displayed of George young St., Ward
Hodgins, Ungar Cunningham. Tone
Gilmour. Sid !login!: and Clint
hodgins.

displayed.
A poster on the Jones family of
('kldelW)ye. showed pictures of Fran-
cis .)ones. Cabinet-illaker in
Clandeboye from 1850-1894. F)r. Ansen
.Jones. son of Francis .)ones, a
medical doctor in Clandeboye for
several years, leaving in 1911. K.O.
Clones. son of Francis, owned 21010
acres .of -land. a Mile north of
Clandeboye.
The same poster showed pictures of
the various pieces of fine furniture
made by Francis Jones in his 1,Vood-
working shop ill (11[1(1hoyr:,as well
as a picture of their lovely old h me
which still remains in Clandeboye
despite its disrepair.

An old Autograph quill, made by
the Clandeboye Methodist Church
ladies in 1923 was on display. Mrs.
Rupert 1V'illianls is the proud owner
of it. Several articlse of wearing ap-
parel from the 'early 1900's was also
displayed.

memorial to Colonel James llodgins,
who in 1832, he and his family of eight
children. were the first white settlers
in Ftiddulph. Ile was appointed. in 1835.

ner stone is a kettle from Kettle Point.

As the tour crane to an end we
_hoped everyone ' had learned
something about the past. Of course.
we only touched a law of the many
families.111 that sacred burial ground.
The people were asked to take time
to browse through the many displays
and books in the church and tel stop
for a'cup of tea and a piece of anniver-
sary cake to commemorate the 80th
anniversary of Clandeboye Woolen's
Institute. . '
