Express
The Exeter Express participated in
a weekend senior baseball tourna-
ment in Tillsonburg and were on the .
short short end of a pair of decisions.
In the opener, the Express lost 10-1
as the host Tillsonburg club scored 10
runs in the top of the fifth inning to
win. In the second game the London
South juniors edged the Exeter club
3-2
The only Exeter run in the first
game crossed the plate in the third in-
ning as Don McDonald singled, stole
second and came home on singles
from the bats of Walt Parkinson and
Kevin Hern.
Mike Neil was the starting pitcher
for the Express and went until the
fatal fifth when he needed relief help
from Paul Gilmour.
In the second contest, Paul Gilmour
walked with one out and came home
Local youngster
wins in judo
Three years of intensive training in
judo has paid off for a 12 year-old Ex-
eter youngster'. .
Two weeks ago in the Junior Olyfh-
pics in Timmins, Ontario Brian McIn-
nes won a bronze medal in the judo
competition.

Jeff Fuller went the distance on the
mound for the Express. Ile was touch-
ed for eight hits in the seven inning
contest. He struck out two and did not
walk a batter.

The only run of the game came in
the top of the first as Kevin Lightfoot
singled and scored on Brian Noyes

The Royals had three hits off winn-
ing pitcher Dennis Carty who struck
out 10 batters. Dan Heywood had two
hits while Steve Prout had the other.
Glen -Thompson of the disbanded
Lieury team tossed a strong game for
the Royals allowing only four hits
while striking out six batters.
The Royals travelled to Brodhagen
on the weekend and lost both games.
Friday night a team from Toronto
beat them 7-4.
They led 2-0 until the fourth. Brian
Hodgins and Jeff Rowe each had two
hits and twb r.b.i.'s while Glen
Thompson, Jim Allison and Willie
-Lamb each had one.
Scott Brintnell took the loss giving
up seven hits while striking out seven
batters.
Saturday the Royals led 1-0 until the
'win.
Solid pitching, strong defense and
timely hitting led the way to the win.
The Royals opened up a 3-0 lead in
the first as Pete Tuckey singled, Dan
Heywood singled, Jeff Rowe tripled
and Mike Desjardine doubled.
They added two more runs in the se-
cond to knock starter Jim Daniels
from the game. Pete Tuckey singled
and scored and Steve Prout came in
on a passed ball.
They added their final run in the top
of the seventh off former senior
fastball pitcher Steve Vrag as Steve
Prout and Dan Heywood singled and
Jeff Rowe doubled.
Scott Brintnell tossed a three hitter
to pick up the win He struck out four
batters and walked three in the com-
plete game victory. Jim Daniels took
the loss with relief from Vrag. They
gave up 10 hits, five off each while
striking out 12 batters.

For the second time this season the

Some very nice prizes were up for
grabs as Molson's sponsored Tuesday
night's Ironwood men's club play.
Shooting par and winner of low
cross in •'A" flight was Stu Homuth
followed by Dave Holtzmann's "36".
Winners in the low net category
were Don Gifford at 34 and Will
Chisholm at 35.
Capturing "B" flight with a low
gross of 40 was Don Currell followed
by Dan Heywood and Gabby Mol.
Winner in the low net slot was Randy
Gilfillan with a 32. Next in low net was
Don Heywood and Brian Taylor.. _
"C" flight's low gross was shot by
Scott Pincombe with a-43 followed by
Bill Chisholm and John Maurer. Ken
Varley at 33 and Bill Hodge and Ralph
Astle rounded out the "C" low net:
Wilmer Ferguson's "50" won "D"
flight low gross .with Dave Frayne
and Roy Hunter close behind..A "35"
crded by Ken Hermann was good for
a low- net win with Lee Webber and
Andy DeBoer rounding out the "D"
net champs.

LAWN BOWLING
The Exeter lawn bowling club held
its first men's pairs tournament of the
season Wednesday sponsored by the
Exeter Oddfellows.
Teams came from Clinton,
Seaforth, Woodstock,. London and
Exeter.
Bill Rogerson and Ernie Chipchase
of the host club won first -prize with
three wins and a score of 55.
Peter McFalls and Marshall Dear-
ing won the consolation prize with a
win of 21 plus one. -
The next tournament of the men's
pairs variety is Wednesday June 17 at
1:30 p.m.
LADIES GOLF -
Tuesday was again ladies night at
the Exeter Golf and Country Club
with 28 ladies participating.
The longest drive on number nine
was made by Dorothy Marks while
Peggy Ferguson took honours on
number four with a score of five.
Low overall score was fired by
Helen Burton who carded -a 53.
Theresa McCann came in with a low
putt count of 12 and Cathy Robbins
had high score on number seven.
Lunch and a game of cards round-
ed out a successful day.
Next week it's a Texas' Scramble
for the ladies assurin:.lent of fun.

Sand Play - An ideal divot for a.nor-
mal sand shot is long and shallow -
longer and shallower than most
players ever envision. You can enter
the sand anywhere from -an inch to
three or four inches behind the ball.
and the divot should extend through
the ball eight to ten inches.
If you keep the face of the club
open, you'll produce a long, shallow
divot; the clubs won't digin. A square
or closed face, on the other hand, will
dig in too much aridproducea short;
deep divot. burying the clubhead.
Picture a long and shallow divot on
uphill and downhill bunker shots as
well as on a level lie. A good practise
idea is to go into the bunker without
a ball and just work on taking long.

Lane in the new Stoney Ridge subdivi-
sion off Huron St. E. started his judo
activities in January of 1985.
In October of last year. due to his
placing second in two international
competitions Brian was -awarded his
green belt allowing him to instruct
younger students.
Less than two months ago, Brian
competed its the Southwest Regionals
in Kincardine and qualified for the
just completed Junior Olympics.
