Athletes Honoured
We wish to pass on our congratulations to all of the athletes
who were honoured at Wednesday's awards night banquet at South
Huron District High School.
There were 258 students participating on 22 different teams.
Of this large groups of competitors there were two playing on five
teams. One was Lee O'Rourke.
Lee O'Rourke also won the Panther award. This honour goes
to the graduating student for outstanding achievement and con-
tribution to athletics at South Huron through the five year term.
This honour is well deserved by Lee. She just completed a very
successful year in track and field winning Huron -Perth, WOSSA
and OFSSA regionals and placing third in all of Ontario in the long
jump.
OFSSA, the all -Ontario high school athletic association has
issued a code for players and coaches and they were printed in
the program and we will pass them along now.
Code for Players
Play the game for the game's sake.
Be generous in winning.
Be graceful in losing.
Be fair at all times.
Be obedient to the rules.
Work for the good of the team.
Accept the decisions of the officials gracefully,
Trust in the honesty of your opponents.
Conduct yourself at all times with honour and dignity.
Recognize and applaud honestly and wholeheartedly the ef-
forts of your teammates or opponents regardless of colour, creed
or race.
Sports Spotlight
by Ross Haugh
Code for Coaches
The game is played for the sake of enjoyment.
The rules of the game are to be regarded as mutual
agreements, the spirit or letter of which no one should try to evade
or break.
Visiting teams and spectators are guests and should be treated
.as such.
No advantages, except those of superior skill are to be sought
over others.
Officials and opponents are to beregarded and treated as
honest in' intention.
Decisions of officials no matter how unfair they may seem are
to be accepted without outward appearance of vexation.
'1'o win is always desirable. But to win at any cost defeats .the
purpose of the game.
Losing can be a triumph when the best has been given.
The greatest good to the greatest number is the ideal.
The Golden Rule in sport it to treat other persons as you,
yourself would like to be treated.
• Still Time for Tickets
Anyone wishing to join the close to 600 baseball fans from
Huron county on their trip to see the Blue Jays in action on July
1 can still reserve a seat on one of the buses and game tickets.
A call to one of the three locations of Ellison Travel will do
the trick. All profits from Huron county day will go to the two Big
Brothers and Big Sister organizations in Huron.
Gremlins Got In
We wish to make an apology and correction concerning an item
in this column a couple of weeks ago. We were talking about the
new outside basketball courts at SHDHS.
South Huron coach Terry O'Rourke was quoted as saying, "Be
careful with the new baskets and please no dunking." Somehow
through a typographical error it appeared as, "please no drink-
ing." Sorry, Terry.

Junior baseball
team defeated
In their only start of the week in the
Great Lakes senior baseball league,
the Exeter Co -Op juniors dropped 7-4
decision to the London North
juveniles. The game was played at
Labatt Park.
The' Exeter club scored all four runs
in the first inning when the first seven
batters reached base on six walks and
a hit batsman.
Four wild pitches also contributed
to the opening rally as three runners
scored on wild pitches and the other
was forced in as Darren Akey walked.
The only Exeter hits were a double
from Scott Lovie and a single from
the bat of Steve Merner.
The hardest thing to learn in life is
which bridge to cross and which to

Good week for minor soccer
This week was a very successful
week for teams in the Exeter soccer
club with eight out of 11 teams winn-
ing their games.
In squirt action Exeter III put its
undefeated record on the line against
Exeter I. After a closely played game
it was a goal by David Farquhar on
a pass from Adam Johns that decid-
ed the game in a 1-0 victory for Ex-
eter I. Playing an excellent game for
Exeter 1 were Jeremy Van Esbroeck
and Brian Ilayman as were Jason
Grevier and Shawn Lynn for Exeter
111.
In the other squirt match up Exeter
II and Exeter IV played an excellent
game. Exeter II,< took a 2-0 lead on
goals by Trevor. Zovisma and Geoff
Mauer on a penalty shot) and then
had to hold off a determined charge
by the Exeter TV team in the late
stage of the game. Jonathan Triebner
and Trevor Skinner excelled for Ex-
eter IV. -
In atom play Exeter I chalked up
their second win of the season as they
easily defeated Nairn 1. Most of the
play took place on the Nairn- end.
Marty DeBruyn and Matt Glavin two
each, led the Exeter attack with Jeff
Inch scoring in single fashion..
Exeter If travelled to Coldstream
and after an excellent effort came
away with a 6-1 victory. Scoring for
Exeter II were not available at press
time.
In mosquito action Exeter 1 stayed
unbeaten. They travelled to
Bryanston and a good team effort
resulted in a 3-1 win. Sivichay
Sengkhounmany, Danny Martens and
Jamie Dougall scored for Exeter 1
with Chris Neil and Gavin Snell pull-
ing forth an'excellent effort.
The excellent play of Mark Brint-
nell and Mark Foster was not enough
as Exeter II lost their second game of
the season against a very big and
strong St. Columban team. The only
goal for Exeter 11 was scored by Joel
Campbell on an indirect free kick
taken by 'Ryan Stuart.
Both pee wee teams were suc-
cessful this week. Exeter I played at
home and led by a hattrick by Ryan
Hern easily defeated Bryanston.
Goals by Brad Thompson. Jason
McElrae, Shawn McFalls and Nicky
Szabo putt the final score at 7-0 for
Exeter 1.
Exeter II travelled to Grand Bend
to come away with an easy 2 points
as the Grand Bend team did not show.
It was a beautiful night. for a game so
coach Lorne Hideout opted for a
scrimmage on the Grand Bend field.
Exeter 11 is now unbeaten in three
games. •-
In bantam action Exeter travelled
'to Strathroy. Last year all three
• games against Strathroy were losses.
However. this year the Exeter boys
are showing that they have really itn-
i•• ty
proved. Strathroy was dominated by
the Exeter team and were lucky to
lose by only 3-1. Excellent play by the
defence and strong midfield play
were the key factors. Scoring for Ex-
eter were I lenri DeBruyn. ( two) and
Sivixay Sengkhoumany, Greg Lam-
port, Chris Beierling and Jason
McFalls played excellent.
Hats off this week to Shawn
McFaIIs who refereed his hest game
ever. Well done Shawn.
