The June meeting of the United Church Women was held Monday - evening with 38 in attendance. President Mrs. Barry Jeffery welcomed everyone and opened the business part of the meeting with a poen "Memory Garden". The roll call was answered by tell- ing the month you were married in. The minutes and cards of thanks were read. The one day at Alma College is August 8. It was decided to enter a -- —display -for -the -Exeter -fair. Mrs. Reg Hodgert gave the treasurer's report. It was decided the executive would look after the 25th an- niversary of the U.C.W. church ser- vice in September. Mrs. John Pym gave a very in- teresting detailed account of the -63rd London Conference held recently in Sault Ste. Marie. The South Huron Regional meeting will be held on September 29 at Grand Bend. The - first meeting was held at Grand Bend 25 years ago. - • Mrs. Mac Hodgert welcomed everyone and opened the worship ser- vice with a poem "Be A Welcome Guest". We sang "God. Of Our -Farmlands". The scripture lesson Ecclesiastes 3:3-11 was read by Mrs. Ross Batlan- tyne. A joint prayer was given by Mrs. Mac Hodgert and Mrs. Don Bray. A reading June Thoughts was given by Mrs. Ross Ballantyne. a reading by Mrs. Don Bray. Mrs. Fleming Simpson introduced her nephew Gordon Black of near St. Marys who was a Rotary Club ex- change student to Japan in 1985 for a year. He gave a very interesting talk and showed pictures which were very explanatory. He was thanked by Mrs. Reg Hodgert and she presented Gor- don with a gift. Mrs. Don Bray gave a humorous reading. Mrs. Lorne Passmore and Mrs. -Ross Ballantyne received the of- fering with offertory prayer by Mrs. Don Bray. • The meeting closed with the sing- ing of "0 plaster Let Me Walk Wit„ .• Thee" and the benediction by Mrs. Mac 1Todgert. A delicious lunch of tarts and tea was enjoyed. Lists were Laud singers at campfire The weather cooperated for the an- nual Lucan Scout Guide campfire at the Lions Park, Friday evening after hofdogs, barbequed by Venturer members, the crowd assisted slight- ly by Dale Froats showed its en- thusiasm by singing loudly enough to start the campfire as told in an "old Indian legend" by camp chief, Linda Chatterson. — — A program of - songs and skits presented by divisions was enjoyed by all. Congratulations were extended to 1st Lucan Cubs for the best decorated campsite at District camp and to the team of Neil Froats, Eric Schatzler and Craig Williams who won the trophy for the fastest soap box derby car there. There was even a surprise visit from the 30 foot snake "Kaa"! Also congratulations went to Tabatha Froats and Erik Barr who were attending an awards banquet to receive the bronze award of the Duke of Edinborough award. This award recognizes high achievement in per- sonal self discipline, community ser- vice and physical fitness and stamina in a major sports endeavor. Group Committee would like to thank all those who came out to the campfire. Sincere appreciation is given to all the leaders for their time ' and efforts spent and for their caring, enabling the running of sdch suc- cessful programs this year. High damages inthree crashes Three accidents causing total damages of $21,030 were investigated this week by officers of the Ontario Provincial Police detachment at Lucan. Sunday at 12:15 a.m. a vehicle driven by James Austin, RR 2 Ailsa Craig left the roadway of Concession road 6-7 near Highway 7 and struck a hydro pole. Constable Craig listed damages at $12,500. Vehicles operated by Teunis Vandenool, RR 4 Clinton and Halley Whitney collided Friday at 5 p.m. on Highway 4. Damages were set at $1,030 by Constable Wilcox. . Constable Vance listed damages at $7,500 when a stole_ n vehicle owned by Angela Crunican, RR 3 Lucan struck a pole on Concession 8-9 of London township. Mt Carmel CWL The June meeting of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel C.W.L. was held in the meeting room with 23 members pre- sent, answering the roll call with "a summer recipe". The minutes of last meeting mere read by Mary Glavin.A very nice reading entitled 'Desiderata' was given by Theresa McCann. Dennis Wilhelm, our new deacon was welcomed to the meeting by the C.W.L. members. Find! plans for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel centennial weekend July 4 arid 5 were discussed. A raffle was held with prizes donated by Dorothy Dietrich and Diane Andrews with the proceeds going for centennial projects. " The meeting ended with games, cake and ice cream in a surprise celebration of Father Gary-GT/can's birthday in June. then handed out for the strawberry supper. Church service Earl Miller of the Gideon Bible Society was in charge of the church service on Sunday morning. He told the children a story about Gideon. Mr. Don Jolly gave a very interesting talk and Earl told about how many New Testaments and Bibles have been given out. They had a Bible display in the front entryway to the church. The choir sang a number accompanied by the organist Miss Agnes Bray. Perry Mitchell of Kintore will be in charge of the church service on Sun- day June 14 at 11:15 a.m. The Sunday School anniversary church service will be held Sunday June 21 at 11 a.tn. and Sunday June 28 there will be no services at Thames Road owing to Elimville at{niversary. Personals Several from this area attended "The Art Christmas Aggregation" 'concert "That's Entertainment" at the Exeter High School on Saturday evening for the Cancer Society. It was well worth attending. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hodgert and Alan attended an anniversary dinner Sunday for Mr. and Mrs. Hedley May of Exeter who were celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary which was on June 2. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. May. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Rohde, Mitchell were Sunday supper guests with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rohde.
