New season underway
Plenty of summer activities planned -at Rec Centre
Sumpter doesn't officially begin until June 21, but planning for
summer activities at the South Huron Rec Centre is well underway.
Rec director Lynne Farquhar tells us registrations for the
swimming pool programs will be held June 16 and 17 from 7 to 9
p.m. Sue Boyle is returning as chief lifeguard and program co-
ordinator with Karla Josephson as her assistant.
Applications for playground supervisors are now being con-
sidered and registration date is expected to be Monday, July 6. The
sports program is offered to boys and girls between the ages of
eight to 12 years and those from four to seven years are eligible
for the Bert and Ernie club.
A large group of seniors from Exeter and area are expected
to take part in the Ontario Seniors Games to be held June 22 and
23 in Seaforth. Locals will be participating in shuffleboard, lawn
bowling, cribbage and five pin bowling.
The wading pool at Victoria Park will be open each afternoon
beginning in July.
This year's Lake Huron Sportsfest will be held August 14 to
16 in Hanover and many local athletes are expected to participate.
When the same event was held in Exeter in 1985 more than 200
athletes were in attendance. Anyone from here wishing to take part
should call the Rec Centre at 235-2833 during regular office hours.
The ball tournament season is already underway. Dave Urlin,
Gerry Smith and company from the Exeter Inn-dians sponsored
a very successful slo-pitch tournament this past weekend with the
assistance of Molson's and their local rep Dan Grantham.
The next tournment is set for the weekend of June 12, 13 and
14 when the Exeter Mohawks senior hockey club will be presen-
-,ting--their-annual-mixed-event-followed by the Exeter Lions
homecoming tournament the following weekend June 19, 20 and 21.

renovated Canada Sports Hall of Fame is now open at the Cana-
dian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto.
A -visit would be ideal for anyone getting to a Blue Jays game
an hour or two early. Admission is free.
The Hall is home to more than 3000 items ranging from -Olym-
pic and world championship medals to racing sculls and racing
bikes. There are eight theme areas. They are team sports, winter
sports, acquatics, all-rounders, equestrian sports, strength and
science sports, track and field and lifestyle sports.

Minister tries to help
The National Hockey league is being urged to reduce violence
and improve safety conditions in its games by Ontario Minister
of Tourism and Recreation John Eakins.
In a letter this week to NHL president John Ziegler, Eakins
said, "I am sure thousands of viewers continue to be amazed and
frustrated by the repeated examples of violence and intimidation
being brought to the television screen and the leniency with which
they seem to be dealt with by your league and officials."
The Minister noted the most recently publicized incidents dur-
ing this year's playoffs indicate something must be done to reduce
the level of violence in hockey.
Eakins is concerned about the number of fights and aggressive
stickwork during NHL games and what effect that will have on
thousands of minor and junior hockey players in Ontario who watch
NHL hockey on television.
While the minister has no jurisdiction over the NHL, he is urg-
ing Ziegler to support the Sports Safety Intatives being undertaken
by his Ministry to reduce violence and improve safety conditions
in all amateur sports.
Lots of hot air
One of the newest sports books on the market was written and
produced in London, Ontario and contains more than 2,000 quips
and quotes from the world of sports.
It's called, "Hot Air" and was compiled by Gary Alan Price
who was sports director of CFLP radio for almost 10 Years.
The book is being sold by all of the Optimist clubs in the city
of London and proceeds are being used for youth work. The cost
is $10.
We have had the book for a couple of weeks now and read a
few goodies every day and they are very interesting. Here We go
with a few examples.
Bobby Orr about his bad knees: "If I were a horse they'd pro-
bably shoot .me".
Don Maloney of the Rangers: "I promised myself I'd get as
may goals this year as Wayne Gretszky got last week".
Toby Harrah of the Cleveland Indians: "It took me 12 years to
become an overnight sensation."
Yogi Berra: "I 'think Little League baseball is wonderful. It
keeps the kids out of the house".
Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes: "Don't print anything
nice about me. I might have to live up to it."
Sports journalist Larry King: "Why does the guy who gives
tips at the race track often need a ride home."
An even dozen softer teams in Exeter minor group
It is time once again to start repor-
ting results of the teams of the Exeter
soccer club. Soccer in this area just
keeps on growing.
The Exeter soccer club besides
fielding a senior team in the London
second division will field 10 teams in
the Lucan and District soccer league
in four age groups and two teams in
the West Middlesex youth soccer
league, an under 17 team and an
under 11 girls team.
The girls team is a very exciting
happening for the soccer club as it
marks the first time that we have
been able to field a complete girls
team. During the next 14 weeks we
will keep you up-to-date on the scores
and standings of each team and its
program during the course of the
season.
Two weeks ago was the first week
of the season with only four Exeter
teams seeing action.
In the squirt division, Exeter iII
and Exeter IV met each other at th.i
high school. For so early in the season
and considering that for some players
this was their first ever soccer game,
it was an excellent game, most of the
play was in midfield. In the end it was
Exeter III that came out the winner
capitalising on some fast breaks and
scoring three times.
Scoring for Exeter III were Lucan.
Forrest with two and newcomer Jeff
Campbell. Jeff McLean and Ben
Glavin played an excellent game for
Exeter IV as did Sean Guenther for
Exeter III.
In the pee wee divisioh Exeter I and
Exeter II squared off for their first
game of the season. Both teams
played well trading goals back and

forth until the final score of 3-3 was
reached.

McAllister, two and Ryan Hern and
for Exeter II Sisivay Sengkhoun-
many, two and Mark Crighton one.
This past week and the second week
of the season now all Exeter teams in
action except the girls team. Their
season starts next week.
In squirt action this week, Exeter
I travelled to St. Columban and met
the new entry in the league. Despite
excellent play by Steven Horn and
Michael Ford, Exeter came away the
loser by a 3-0 score.
Exeter 11 travelled to Grand Bend
and in a closely played game Scott
Gilfillan scored the winning goal for
Exeter II in a 3-2 win over the Grand
Bend rivals also scoring for Exeter II
were Geof Mayer and Scott
Rasenberg.
Exeter III travelled to Nairn for a
game against Nairn II. In a fairly
rough game, Luke Sims played a star-
ring role as he scored on a penalty
shot and set up the other Exeter goal
by Jonathon Groot. Ryan Rutledge
also was excellent.
Exeter iV played at home against
Nairn I and evened their record at one
win and one loss as they defeated
Nairn I on two goals by Jeff McLean.
Exeter IV had a big territorial advan-
tage but managed to score only twice
because of the congestion in front of
the Nairn goal.
In a makeup game Exeter I and Ex-
eter II played to a 1-1. draw. David,
Tragiiair scored -for Exeter I and
Trevor Boersma for Exeter II.
In atom division play, Exeter I and
Exeter II played a hard fought battle
with Exeter I coming out on top with
a 3-1 score. Scoring for Exeter I were
Marty DeBruyn, Chris McDonald and
Matt Glavin. Replying for Exeter II
was Brent Gibson.
In mosquito action Eugene
Boersma scored the only goal of the
game on a shot from close range for
Exeter I and then the Exeter I team
had to fight off a determined Exeter
II team to preserve their 1-0 win.
In pee wee play, Exeter I travelled
to St. Columban and were on the short
end of a 3-1 score. No particulars were
available on the game at press time.
Exeter II had an easier time of it as
it got goals from six different players
in a 10-1 win over Bryanston. Dean
Pfaff, three, Sisivay Sengkhounmany,
two, Mark D'Anna, two, Amanda
Houston, Shane Pfaff and Scott Bierl-
ing scored for Exeter II. Their next
game will be more of a test as they
meet Grand Bend.
The Exeter under 17 team playing
in the West Middlesex youth soccer
league saw action for the first time
this week in a game against Lambeth
in Exeter. •
The Exeter team led by a four goal
performance of midfielder Henri
DeBruyn took the play to the
Lambeth team from the outset and
with an excellent team performance
never gave Lambeth a chance to get
in the game. Jason McFalls and Tim
McAllister also scored tor Exeter.
Another group in our soccer club,
which will not be mentioned on a
weekly basis is a group of tykes com-
prised of 25 boys and girls four and
five years old under the care of coach
Henrt DeBruyn and parent
volunteers.
The future of our club is at work
every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the
highschool. Good luck to Ilenri and his
crew.
Good luck also at the beginning of
this season to all the young referees
in our system. Without you we could
not run as extensive a program as we
now do. To all parents, coaches and
fans, please be supportive of these
young boys' and girls as they are
learning.
