The ladies read and studied psalms 124, 36. 29, 14. and 131. Each of these psalms reveals God's power and authority in a conflict situation. The fire is designed to remove fire sensitive white pine from a natural oak savannah forest. According to Terry Crabe, Resource Management Specialist at the park, "Due to a lack of past understanding of the open nature of an oak savannah forest, nearly two million pines were planted throughout the park from 1957 to 1971. These pines have now grown and compete with the natural oaks. If the pines are not removed, plants and animals common to this habitat will disappear". Briefly, the ecology of savannah is characterized by open, sunny condi- tions with widely spaced trees. This encourages the growth of unique shrubs, prairie grasses and herbs. The pines, planted at two metre inter- vals, are both unnatural and incom- patible with the savannah vegetation. The fire, the first to be attempted in a southern Ontario naturalenviron- ment park, has been carefully plann- ed for over a year. An inventory, which determined the species content and density, has been carried out along with extensive research on the oak savannah forest type. Crabe further added, "The burn site is located in a corner of Nature Reserve Zone two and is represen- tative of the park vegetation. It is well boundaried by the Ausable river and a paved park road extending from the river and bending around to join the third boundary, a combination of a park owned hydro line and a scar from the recent installation of a water line". The area will be ignited by helicopter and the burn will be con- trolled by highly trained staff from Aviation and Fire . Management Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Fire crews will also be deployed to contain the fire in the designated area. No buildings or park assets are located within the area. The fire management strategy for the burn -off was prepared by Brent Tegler, a fire management technician with the Ontario -Ministry of -Natural - Resources. Tegler told the T -A Monday the in- formation provided earlier in this ar- ticle by Terry Crabe "is4ntended to alleviate any fears of local residents and naturalist groups who have in- terest in the park". He continued, "The burn will be of low intensity and is not going to kill. larger trees. It will clean up litter and knock back some woody growth." Tegler added, "The burn should re- juvenate plant life. Many prairie species are encouraged by fire. If all the pine were allowed to mature they would create dense shade for natural plant species. If thisburn is suc- cessful it could become an annual af- fair in the next five or 10 years." vie our inventory for year- ' ALL MERCHANDISE.
