Written by professors Les McLean. Richard Wrilfe and Merlin Walhstrom, of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, the -brief, en- - titled "Learning About Teaching From Comparative Studies," analyses data gathered in a com- prehensive review of mathematics in 20 countries. Since education in. Canada is a provincial responsibility. both Ontario and British Columbia were considered "countries" for (he purposes of the study. Among the brief's conclusions are: • The top five per cent of Ontario's Grade 13 mathematics students. lak- g-dwe--er--rmrrcmrnattmmtittm— courses. compare favourably with top students internationally; * Ontario students on average rank- ed in the. middle of the participating countries; T -A photo What 3 =oing Read this page to find out EXERCISE & AEROBIC VIDEOS $1995 each ........... The brief is based on data gathered in the Second international Mathematics Study (SIMS). under- taken in the early 1980s by the Inter- national Association for the -Evalua- tion of Education Achievement. The study examined a range of edncational factors. including studgnt achievement, teaching techniques and attitudes towards learning, which affected two sample groups in each participating country. - 'The first sample group was a grade where the largest number of students were 13 -year-olds, while the second focussed on students in their final , year of high school, who were study- ing mathematics for at least five hours per week. In Ontario, the first sample was drawn from Grade 8 students and the second from Grade 13 students.
