Ontario students
best in world
in mathematics
Ontario's top trade 13
mathematics students are among the .
best in the world. according to a re-
cent research brief prepared for the
Ministry of Education.
Written by professors Les McLean.
Richard Wrilfe and Merlin
Walhstrom, of the Ontario Institute
for Studies in Education, the -brief, en-
- titled "Learning About Teaching
From Comparative Studies,"
analyses data gathered in a com-
prehensive review of mathematics in
20 countries. Since education in.
Canada is a provincial responsibility.
both Ontario and British Columbia
were considered "countries" for (he
purposes of the study.
Among the brief's conclusions are:
• The top five per cent of Ontario's
Grade 13 mathematics students. lak-

students internationally;
* Ontario students on average rank-

* Of all countries studied. Ontario •
has one of the highest percentages of
students studying math in tete Final
year of high school:
• Ontario students in their final year
of high school do twice as much math
homework as their American
counterparts;
* With the exception of algebra: On-
tario has one of the more comprehen-
sive mathematics programs in the
countries studied.
The brief is based on data gathered
in the Second international
Mathematics Study (SIMS). under-
taken in the early 1980s by the Inter-
national Association for the -Evalua-
tion of Education Achievement.
The study examined a range of
edncational factors. including studgnt
achievement, teaching techniques
and attitudes towards learning, which
affected two sample groups in each
participating country. -
'The first sample group was a grade
where the largest number of students
were 13 -year-olds, while the second
focussed on students in their final
, year of high school, who were study-
ing mathematics for at least five
hours per week. In Ontario, the first
sample was drawn from Grade 8
students and the second from Grade
13 students.
The brief is available for $3.50 in
Ontario Government bookstores A
copy is available to the media from
Carolann Patsalides (416)965-3141.
