More women getting
into the work force
More women than ever are enter-
ing the work force. Yet unemploy-
ment is greater than it has been at
any time since the depression. And at
the same time, the very jobs women
have traditionally counted on are
undergoing rapid technological
change. What then, are realistic
employment options for women?
In order to help women select
employment choices that hold some
promise for the future, the YWCA of
Metropolitan Toronto has published a
handbook, Working in the 1980's: 20
Selected Jobs for Women. Each job
description outlines information
about the nature of the work. training
requirements, future prospects,
salary, and advancement
opportunities.•
. According to Jeanne Eddington,
YWCA Working Skills for Women
Coordinator, the handbook grew out

of experience in the Working Skills
program which trains women to
adapt to the impact of technology on
the work force.
"This handbook is written for
women who want better jobs," says
Eddington. "It will be useful for
women needing to re-train, women
considering non-traditional or
computer-related occupations,
women searching for a new career
direction, young women seeking a
career with a future, women re-
entering the work force. In addition,
it will be very useful for high school
guidance counsellors, employment
counsellors and vocational advisors."
Occupations included in Working in
the 1980's cover a wide range of op-
tions from carpenters and instrument
technicians to office systems ad-
ministrators, chiropodists, and law
clerks.
The jobs selected for inclusion in
the guide were chosen because they
satisfied some, or all, of the following
criteria: a training period of one, two,
or at most, three.years; availability
of training at a community college
level; possibility in many cases of on-
the-job training and part-time study;
good earning potential; likelihood of
being around for the next 10-20 years;
availability, in some cases, of federal
training funds.

Sewing Plus
new project
"Sewing Plus" is a second level
sewing project, to be offered during
1987.
It is aimed at 4 -II members who
have already learned to sew, have
made at least one garment, and know
how to operate a sewing machine.
Shirts are a popular wardrobe item
for all teens, and in this club,
members will learn to sew a shirt
with interfacing and a collar from a
cotton or cotton/polyester blend
fabric.
Why should a 4-1-1 member take:a
project like Sewing Plus?
One reason is that an appreciation
of good quality garment construction,
knowing how to care for clothing, and
being able to use Canada's Care
Labelling System, all help members
to be better consumers.
A clothing project not only teaches
sewing skills, but helps members
throughout their lives to make deci-
sions about selecting and caring for
clothing.
Workshops for the sewing plus pro-
ject are planned for Thursday, March
12, 10:00 a.m. • 3;00 p.m. and on
Thursday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. -
10:30 p.m. These workshops will be
held in the OMAF boardroom,
Clinton.

Problems
Confusion, fear, guilt, and
loneliness are just a few of the emo-
tions that many children face every
day when they live in an alcoholic's
home. TVOntario's award-winning
children's series Today's Special,
reaching over 500,000 young viewers
each week, looks at alcohol abuse and
its effects on children in "Phil's
Visit," to be shown Tuesday, 24
February at 6:30 p.m. EST. "Phil's
Visit" is a very sensitive program
that helps children learn to deal with
problems of people around them.
Gerard Parkes (Doc on CBC -TV's
Fraggle Rock) plays Phil Fanelli, a
famous photographer who has come
to the department store to photograph
Jodie's displays for Storemakers
magazine. What starts out as one of
the most exciting nights for Jodie,
Jeff, Sam, and Muffy ends in upset,
anger, and sadness, because Phil has
a drinking problem. As the effects of
Phil's drinking worsen, Muffy is forc-
ed to decide whether or not to tell
Jodie or Sam about Phil's condition,
and learns that she can confide in an
adult she trusts whenever something
is bothering her.
"It is my hope that his episode of
Today's Special will help to open com-
munication between children and
in alcoholic home
their parents and encourage discus-
sion about one of society's most harm-
ful and destructive diseases," says
creator -producer Clive VanderBurgh.
He adds, "As adults it is up to us to
ensure that children do not live in
silence and to encourage them to seek
assistance."
Today's Special stars Nerene
Virgin as Jodie, Jeff Hyslop as Jeff,
Nina Keogh as Muffy, and Bob
Dermer as Sam.
