Granton ladies at Drain reports read at Hay council session Drains and severances took up a' great deal of the time at the all -day second regular February meeting of Hay township council. Rosaire Bedard, Ken Gascho, Don Geiger and Mrs. Violet Pergel were in attendance to hear the repair and improvement report on the Pergel drain. Engineer Bruce Holdsworth said a prime goal of the repair was to counter erosion, with emphasis on restoration of the channel and protec- tion of the banks and bends. Two drop structures (or grade transitions) will be added to slow down the water velocity. Such erosion control measures are eligible for 80 percent provincial grants on the materials. MTC has asked that the section of drain along the south side of Highway 84 be moved off the right-of-way. An'existing 72 -inch diamter culvert which has washed out will' be reinstalled as twin culverts, exten- ding each piece by two metres. A total of $27,270 is to be assessed against affected lands and roads. 1.1 c i.' 25th Mrs. Pergel was assured that MTC By MRS. E. Assessment figures haven't yet been prepared to deter mine Hay's share of the $25,747.97 total. ' Reeve Lionel Wilder suggested that the percentage be set at the beginn- ing of each council term, as it only varies by one or two percent year by year. This would save the clerk and assistant the task of going through the entire assessment roll each year. Referring to an increase from - liNfroh 35;o Krthis year for rammer— O'Connor to provide a 24 -hour -a -day dispatching service, Wilder termed the charge "costly but reasonable". . . . e . . . Councillors questioned the propos- ed increase in wages for members of the Dashwood and area fire depart- ment. The sum of 810,530 in the 1987 budget forecast would compensate the 17 -member department for prac- tices and fighting an estimated 12 fires during the year. The 17 -man figure was also ques- tioned. Wilder said he thought the agreement has stipulated a max- imum of 16, and 13 had been deemed acceptable. Council decided to sit down with Stephen township representatives, and come up with a budget "accep- table to all in these times of restraint". Bill Regier spoke up to say he did not object to the zoning change if all went according to plan, and Becker's f house was built next to his mother's, with the proposed shop on the east - side of the property., A resolution to the planning depart- ment asking approval for the zoing change and severance will specify that the house be set back 37 feet from the lot line, and the shop be located eight feet in from the rear boundary and eight feet from the eastern side yard. - Councillors next turned their atten- tion to an inquiry from Leonard Ter y a6`ou%-possibility -possibility ofcBanging the institutional designation of the former Ecole-Ste. Munkittrick said the appropriate designation would be ur- ban, which is not logical in a rural area. Munkittrick replied that if a pro- posal makes sense, there should be no problem amending policies to permit it. She advised council to encourage Terry to pursue the proposed zoning change and plan amendment at coun- ty level. Hay could support the pro- posal later, She stressed the necessi- ty of the request coming from the pro- perty owner or authorized agent rather than from just a prospective purchaser.
