New weather recorders
at Centralia College
Centralia College of Agr'icultur'al
Technology has become part of a new
weather monitoring system.
New computerized weather stations
hate been installed at ('('AT's
research farm. on Concession :i of
Stephen township and at a Brussels
location.
They are linked to research
agronomist Bob Forrest's office in
Middlesex hall at the, college.
The ('('A'I' controlled weather stay
lion is two of a dozen under the
management of Brad Schenller of the
land resource science department al
the University of Guelph.
Similar stations are located at all
of the agricultural colleges in.the pro-
vince along with sites at Woodstock
and the Bradford march area.
At 7:15 a.m. each morning, the
computer in Bob Forrest's office
verifies the time, accesses a file of
phone numbers and then sends
messages to the research farm sta-
tion and the Brussels location to down
load all the weather data collected
since. the last call
At each station the set of in-
struments mounted on a 10 foot tower
also record wind speeds and direcc-
tion and soil temperature at four dif-
fierent levels at five, 10, 20 and 50 cen-
timetres. Relative humidity is also
)NCasut'ed.
The Centralia researcher says
'"l'his is a high tech approach for us.
The computer contains an automatic
information retrieved system. The
sensors are monitoring constantly
minute by minute and give us an
hourly summary.
Bob Forrest said, "We are still
shaking down the system, but it has
been providing very valuable
information.
Ile continued, "This is important to
lin what has happened weather -
se as far as crops, .growth, insect
odes and diseases nare concerned.
When we lind out what happens in
slime of the situations. then we can do
something about it. ,
"These weather reports also provide
the number of heat units during the
summer and this information
becomes very important for corn
growers.
In addition to some of these general
weather details, instruments in these
stations across the province can
measure light intensity and duration.
Eventually other instruments such as
an ozone censor could he added.
ozone is a known cause of trouble
with white beans and other crops.
In the past, the only weather infor-
mation gathered at Centralia College
was the recording of high and low
temperatures and rainfall at a station
set up behind Grey Hall.
Since Centralia College was
established in 1967 with Jim
McDonald as the first principal more
Than 1.900 students have graduated.
This year's graduation exercises
are slated for Thursday, 141ay 14.

rest is shown at the new weather station located on the CCAT
research farm on Concession 3 of Stephen township.
