By Cathy Thomson Nutrition Consultant Iluron County Health Unit All parents who have preschool ag- ed children worry about their eating habits. How children's food preferences are influenced is the sub- ject of some recent child development research. The findings are very in- teresting. When children have to "work" to earn the right to par- ticipate- in -a favorite -activity -(eg.- finish you milk before you can watch 'l'V). it causes a decrease in the child's preference for the "work" food (milk). But when food is used as a reward ( eg. you can have some candy if you pick up your toys), it leads to the op- posite effect - greater preference of the reward food (candy). Most parents would prefer that their children liked milk more and candy 'less! Food preferences can be manipulated by the social environ- ment. This change in preference lasted over an 8 week period, with young children more influenced than older ones. . Also, just exposing children to an unfamiliar food will increase their preference for it. What then is the message of all this research? Don't.use food as a reward. unless it's somethingyou want your child to eat more of. Offer a wide variety of foods. even ones your child dislikes.
