All parents who have preschool ag-
ed children worry about their eating
habits. How children's food
preferences are influenced is the sub-
ject of some recent child development
research. The findings are very in-
teresting. When children have to
"work" to earn the right to par-
ticipate- in -a favorite -activity -(eg.-
finish you milk before you can watch
'l'V). it causes a decrease in the
child's preference for the "work" food
(milk).
But when food is used as a reward
( eg. you can have some candy if you
pick up your toys), it leads to the op-
posite effect - greater preference of
the reward food (candy). Most
parents would prefer that their
children liked milk more and candy
'less!
Food preferences can be
manipulated by the social environ-
ment. A child who preferred
vegetable A, seated near several
other children at a day care centre

Robbie Burns
given tribute
January 25 was the day everyone
was to pay tribute to the poet Robbie
Burns, so the Exeter Lioness Club did
it in style with our Scottish President.
.Joyce Eveland bidding everyone a
cheery welcome the ceremony began.
In from the. back of the kitchen
marched Carl Mills with his bag pipes
wailing and the girls marching behind
with the "llaggis" held high on a plat-
ter and in behind Lioness Wendy Long
with a large tnachetti in hand. Up -to
the head table where the address to
the "Ifaggis" was read by Carl in his
Scottish jibber and (heti the "Ifaggis•
was slashed open and mashed by the
Targe ceremonial knife. •
The "llaggis" was escorted out to
(he kitchen. where i't would he
prepared for dinner. Haggis foi•

and heart of a sheep. and mixed in
with oatmeal and suet and then boil..
ed inside the animal's stomach.
While the ladies in the kitchen were
putting the finishing touches on the
surprise dinner, we were handed a
questionaire on Scotland and Laurie
Dykstra read a brief history of Rob -
.hie Burn's life.
The meal was served -and oh What
a Scottish meal it was.. Consisting of

topped off with' whiskey cake.. trifle

lunchroom who preferred vegetable
R, began to choose vegetable B after
a few days. This change in preference
lasted over an 8 week period, with
young children more influenced than
older ones. .
Also, just exposing children to an
unfamiliar food will increase their
preference for it.
What then is the message of all this
research? Don't.use food as a reward.
unless it's somethingyou want your
child to eat more of. Offer a wide
variety of foods. even ones your child
dislikes. The more frequently a new
food ir.included in their daily meals.
the more likely a child will eat and en-

tial! Children learn to like the foods
commonly served to them that other.
